  • There is 2 Tactical Support Units in the FDNY. TSU 1 is on Roosevelt Island covering Manhattan, Bronx, Northern Queens & Northern Brooklyn. TSU 2 is on Staten Island at Rescue 5 quarters covering the rest of the city. They are each staffed by 1 Firefighter from Rescue Operations and must be Rescue Qualified. They respond to a various amount of Rescue Operations Calls, such as Collapses, Trench, Subways, Water Emergencies, Blind Shaft Elevators, Debris / Bricks from a Building, Beach Rescue, Scaffolding, Window Washer Rescues, Any Technical Rescues, Heavy Pin Jobs, SCUBA Calls, 10-76 Commercial High Rise Fires, 2nd Alarms Citywide, Airport Emergencies and any special calls. Tactical Support Units support the Rescue & Squad companies and assist them with operations. During Fires the TSU Firefighter Teams up with Rescue Battalion and his aide and form a team, called Rescue Ops Division. When the TSU arrives on scene before the Rescue Battalion he will assist in helping one of the Rescue companies usually getting tools they may need and teaming up with the Outside Team. TSUs both have a 14 foot Zodaic boat that they can utilize. Mainly TSU 1 uses the boat on Rosevelt Island and Randall’s Island to access the East River. They also use the boat Central Park in Manhattan and even Orchard Beach in the Bronx. TSU 2 may use the boat for the numerous Lakes, Ponds on the Island. They may utilize the boat in the rockaways and in Coney Island for Beach Rescues. It has 4x4 capability so it can drive on sand and During rain and snow storms they may use the TSUs & BFUs along with the High Water Units as they can drive thru high water. So of the tools that are kept on the Tactical Support Units that are not carried on Rescues, Squads or SSLs are the Transit Level which goes on a tripod and magnifies 20 times for a 200 feet range. It allows the user to determine vertical angels. “For example a wall is leaning off a building they can put the transit and mark a spot and monitor the location to see if the wall is moving or shifting.” They have a Zistos camera which is a pole camera that also have a thermal camera. Which can be used for tight areas, Hazmat Scenes, Person Trapped in a tight area to see better visual of something. They carry extra SCUBA equipment as they support the rescues in dive operations. They have numerous types of Large LED Lights. Compliment of Technical & Water Rescue Ropes. Night Vision Googles, All kinds of cordless saws, All kinds of Hazmat Meters, Radiation, Dewatering Equipment as they are dispatched to assist in Dewatering operations and assist Dewatering Unit. All Kinds of Jacks, airbags, extrication equipment jaws. Water rescue line gun, all types of saws and chain saws. Go jacks to move a car. They have a 85 foot tall light tower for scene lighting. There is also a Marine Tactical Unit that is coming in a different fleet Friday they carry more Water Rescue Equipment compared to Rescue Equipment on this unit. Tac 1 Responds to about 1,500 calls a year and Tac 2 Responds to under 1,000 calls a year on average.

    Skyler, great job on the videos really like the fleet Friday and I’ve been in fire service for 36 years served as a career firefighter and as a volunteer fire fighter and I have always been a big fan of Fdny used to drive all the way up from the Rhode Island border in Connecticut to go buffing down there for years with my buddies but never really got an in-depth look at each one of the specialized companies and I think that’s what makes your fleet Friday so special so keep up the good work brother stay safe out there and thanks to you and Fdny for your access

    Another great video Skyler. The rescue division only a small part of past FDNY presence on Roosevelt island. Before the advent of the “rock” the division of training operated there in the 60s. They called it”welfare island “ in those days. The training center occupied that current property and all tha property that is now a parking garage. It was the first thing on the right as you exited the bridge from Ravenswood Queens .

    Skyler, Another great video. TSUs keep getting bigger! Some of the old TSUs were Ford F-350s 4x4 with a Reading body, no crane. That was is the late '80s. Had a ramp on the top, had to manually pull the boat down & put the motor on, every time it was used. This rig beats that hands down. Medium Rescue!!! Have to be able to bring all the toys that can't fit on the Heavy Rescues LOL! On the street or in the water, this is the truck to have. The "Fleet Fridays" keep getting better!!! Thanks Skyler👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 One question, is the Marine Support Unit, a mirror, to the TSUs?

      @@SkylerFire I absolutely love the FDNYs traditions. I'm a retired Deputy Sheriff and our county has a division kinda like New York cities ESU. Almost every road patrol deputy is cross trained as with different certifications like paramedic, water rescue, vehicle extraction, SCUBA and SWAT. During the summer months I did road patrol and marine patrol/water rescue. All road patrol Deputies were also CIT certified Crisis Intervention Team/SWAT.

    And to answer some questions about the Evinrude Rescue Pro 30hp. Evinrude RescuePro Pump-Jet outperforms traditional outboards and eliminates the risk of propeller contact. This is not a traditional water powered jet. This is military grade technology. I also noticed two different motors. At 13:19 the motor was all black and a 25hp and at 14:08 is was a totally different motor. Can you explain that for us? Or my eyes playing tricks? Love the videos!

    Great video! What does this unit carry that wouldn't already be carried by a Rescue, Collapse, Marine, or any other specialized unit for an incident? Or does this just carry more of what a specialized unit already carries, hence its a "support unit." Also what would require the use of the boat? That FDNY only has two of these units in the city, its not like they're getting there anytime soon. If there was any aquatic emergency, wouldn't it be handled quicker by a Marine Unit, NYPD Marine Unit, Coast Guard, or probably a few other water rescue type agencies I can't think of.

    • @SkylerFire
      @SkylerFire  Před rokem +3

      Thanks! So almost everything that’s on the truck is on a Rescue or Squad besides a few things like the Transit for Collapse, Stanley Unit, a couple Hazmat Meters and a few minor things. The rig is support the rescues / squads at the scene extra tools. The boat is used on the island they are quartered on. There is only 3 Marine units staffed in none summer months and 3 extra during summer but still not very close. If Marine 6 is out it may take about 25-30mins for another boat depending on the tide. The boat is via a crane so it can be lowered into areas that you can’t get a boat into for Example Central Park and other ponds. Tho the Rescues carry a boat it has to be blown up. The tactical support until is 4 wheel drive can be driven on a beach. Hope that answered your questions. Also can’t rely on other departments…
