Soul Eater was dropped in 2008 which I think is nuts, but you know what's even more nuts? How crazy good of a shonen it is! hahaha! AHHAHAHAHHAHAHA I LOVE SOUL EATER I LOVE ANIME

I had a lot of fun makin this one, idk why. Thanks for watchin!
you could definitely tell. i love most of your videos, but the best ones have momentum that physically will not allow me to get bored. the second i process a statement or feel like i'm over a concept being explained to me, BAM, new segment. your pacing is top tier in this one scam.
Pacing is top tier, also very based :)) and probably the funniest video I’ve seen in a while. Amazing content bro
You don’t know why huh?
Soul Eater more like Booty Eater
Fucking gottem 😎
your humor is the best man keep going B-)
I thought it was hilarious that canonically the most powerful “Death Scythe” in the show is Excalibur but no one can or wants to use him because he’s just so fucking annoying.
He's just like me fr
It's been a while since I've seen/read soul eater, but isn't Excalibur the original weapon that the witches used to create the other ones, and not a human weapon and death scythe?
We can thank Arthur from fire force for that.
Not gonna lie i absolutely despised those episodes
@@phelps6205 Excalibur is a sword that can transform into a humanoid form, which inspired Eibon to create a new type of weapon; Humans that can turn into weapons. Over time he and Lord Death felt this idea was unethical and hid his research, only for it be found by Arachne
My sister dressed as Excalibur for Halloween back in school and a few people got mad because they thought she was dressed as the KKK.
💀
I thought "that's so fucking cool" and then I continued reading
i too was "holy shit thats ama *final half* --zing...
Costume was great, totally spot on, no idea how you can confuse the two, but I guess if you squint your eyes and they tilt their head up the nose does look...suspicious.
Oh, that's terrible!
That one where Soul was cheating on the test and was watching what black star was writing, thinking it was answers when he was really just writing his own name was hilarious
That whole episode was just too damn hilarious, especially when Kid ripped his test paper with a eraser, the proceeds to just spits out blood and then faints at the lose of symmetry! 💀
@@bill_cipher9861
Tell me about it! My favorite part is when Patty decides to screw off and make a giraffe out of her test.
@@cardnial_omega and then proceeds to violently break the neck of said origami giraffe
Patty was truly a gift
I laughed my ass off during the test episode
Just watched it last week and i loled
I love how Death the Kid seems like this pretentious edgy and arrogant archetype yet instead of being an ass for any amount of time he’s just a good and supportive friend and a genuinely nice person to be around. Great stuff
I really like his character but I felt like they really underused him even if it’s not his show I just wanted more screen time
@@patatthesmth-3325 i feel like the cool guy character usually gets low screentime for the sake of BEING a cool guy. Like as in the kid you see at school that is just so fucking awesome but you hardly ever talk to him because hes so busy and popular
@@patatthesmth-3325 That's why I read the manga, the character arcs are completed much better
As long as you’re not unsymmetrical he’ll be nice
Bro take off your nostalgia goggles, Death the Kid was an unreliable asshole who should have gone to therapy for his symmetry obsession before it comprimised missions and put other people in danger. I don't really care since it wasn't meant to be taken that seriously, but he is far from role model material lol
I love that Maka and Soul are just homies. No forced romance plot but also not completely off the table. They’re just a great duo and outshine a lot of anime protagonists even to this day. Also one of the few animes I like the dub more than the sub. I was like 17-18 when this came out and it’s one of the reasons I didn’t write anime off as a medium.
That's true I fw that platonic shit
Me who watched a FUCK TON of soul and maka amvs 👀
@@ScamboliReviews I fw good chemistry, romantic or platonic.
I just really love how you can tell they genuinely care about each other not because of some BS Boy x Girl romance novel, but because they are partners in crime, working together and living together like pals.
god same, I'm so fucking tired of forced romance. especially because maka is an actually good female protagonist. not saying you can't have good female protags who are also involved in romance, I just feel like it's incredibly easy to ruin a good female character with romance. the only ones I can think of are winry from fmab and mitsuri from kny
I feel old. Still, this anime has a special place in my heart and the characters are unique and fun. I would really love to see a Soul Eater: Brotherhood.
Damn fr
Fr people should start a petition
Soul Eater Resonance
Bruh saaaame
Man I want one too
I love how flawed and emotional Maka can be. Ya know like an actual teenager. Not only that but there are so many characters to love and the animation is BEAUTIFUL
true. and the way they executed it its not overly annoying like katara from avatar for example but i love that series too
Now that Fire Force is completed and has brought up this spectacular world again through it's finale, we can only hope it re-ignites interest in Soul Eater as a series. Maybe it'll finally lead to Soul Eater getting the FMA: Brotherhood treatment it so desperately deserves, and get a rebooted anime that faithfully follows the manga! I'd seriously cry if that happens. Soul Eater has a VERY special place in my heart and I miss it dearly.
I need this , they could honestly just start the reboot from the point where the anime deviates around ep 38 because it still holds up so well
I wish this will not go as Shaman King reboot, where people went silent after few episodes
@@pep4338 honestly I agree if they could recast the same VAs then just do the first 38 as they were and just build from there because imo the animation is perfectly fine.
Yeah...just finished the manga for Fire Force and imma start reading the Soul Eater manga since all ive seen is the anime
There was 1 joke in the show that still gets me.
Watching Kid have a complete breakdown trying to write his name on the top of his test.
'I don't know what Id do if I don't get the k right... (Cries)'
- Death the Kid
The test episode is just such a shitshow. Kid writing his name, Soul trying to cheat, Black Star writing his autograph in his own blood after being beaten and hanged by the teacher for cheating, I think Liz had some breakdown as well. There was a lot of great intense plot heavy stuff but that episode was such a breather, it will stay in my heart forever.
Fucking hilarious, I laughed my shit out
Patty making a giraffe out of her test 😭
@@kasiamleczarska9078 that was probably one of the most funny moments in soul eater.
I'm glad someone pointing out the characters actually liking eachother. It's super immersion breaking to see Classmates/Co-workers/Teammates in shows just being needlessly abrasive.
Yea seriously. I always knew the characters had great chemistry, but when you put that in context to a lot of their anime you realize how little of that is present
Then you would love the manga Spirit Circle.
It's something I didn't notice I liked until I rewatched the show
I can't stand it. In my Hero Academia thr way Deku is treated by Bakugo is so abusive
What do u mean? Like rude?
I think Soul Eater is extremely underrated. Amazing world building. Interesting characters. Insanely under-appreciated sound track.
The world building itself is weak but there's a whole lot of potential. Soundtrack was absolutely insane
@@valance10 To be fair, they cut the anime short and went with an original anime, so it wasn't like everything was explained like in the manga.
I like soul eater bc all of the characters are their own person, they have their own individual struggles that makes it so when their all put together as a team, they each have their own strengths to overcome and help the others issues. The pairing in here is unparralled, Maka and Soul are just written as literally just best friends, and theres no forced romance in their relationship, Soul is the "cool one" and maka is the "strategic quick acting one". Death the kid is the "ecentric ocd kid" while Patty and liz are the kind of air headed but is able to snap kid out of his little tangents and breakdowns during a battle and they fucking hit so hard every single time. Tsubaki and Blackstars relationship is on a whole other level that idek where to begin on that one. In short this is like my all time favorite anime, bc of how good the show was written and exectued. Id obviously love more to the show and not Soul eater NOT bc that shit was a dumpster fire, But they were able to end it so well. I would like maybe a reboot where they end it the way the manga went, but in all, it was an amazing anime pretty ahead of its time
“I didn’t even know Japan unlocked Black people” this guy is straight comedy 😭

How is that funny? Dude is fucking racist.
@@wii1644 hes black himself wtf

@@wii1644 As someone who is black, I have to say, take a joke.
I wanna see this anime come back as a remake, and this time following faithfully the manga.
Or even create a new story with the same or new characters. The soul eater world is so unique and charming and its a fucking sin that this anime had to end the way it did.
The great thing about Soul Eater is that its timeless I could see it being popular if it came out around this time too! If they ever do remake it I hope it has the charm of the original kinda like brotherhood.
@@BossBoji2730 then you might wanna start fire force sometime soon bro
@@BossBoji2730 I think they did that w soul eater not. Sadly it wasn't as good but it also wasn't trying to feel like soul eater either.
The ending of the manga is bad as well
Dr stein is and always will be my favorite character of all time in any anime ive seen, maybe even any media. This man changed my life as a kid I am not lying. I follow in his footsteps.. I can hear his voice every day,.... he's my shmoodle... my babygirl..
Ur just like me fr
real
This was the first anime that got me fully hooked into anime honestly. It's sad more people don't know about it, I remember being so mesmerized by this
I think the ending is partly to blame for it's waning popularity. It had so much going for it and in an effort to subvert the audience's expectation, the final confrontation fell flat on its face.
I hear it didnt follow the manga
No its due to the fact it caught up to manga
@@xblade149 yeah Bones had a reputation for doing anime original when it caught up to the manga. it did the same for FMA
@@pamelotms5867 Yeah it didn't follow the manga and they split apart plot wise about half way through the series
Yeah, the mysterious Deus Ex Machina power they pulled out at the end totally subverted the entirety of the story's character development. Like, they had this whole "madness or courage" thing going on and then were just like "Hah, psych. Neither. Just fuckin' sentient bones or some shit."
There is a reason why Soul Eater isn't talked about, the ending. It was underwhelming. That means more than people think, especially over a long period of time. This also affected the manga as many anime fans didn't check out the manga afterwards which was still ongoing. The lack of real attention for the meant that compared to shows from that same era like Death Note stuck around in the conscious of people more. Unlike Code Geass which got another season, several spin offs, a couple specials, and several manga. Code Geass was an anime original and that means a lot, especially nowadays. I've watched Soul Eater twice and agree with everything said in this video.
It would feel disingenuous to talk about Soul Eater without mentioning the main reasons why it never stuck with as many people as it seemingly should have. This show and manga were breaths of fresh air for Shounen which was dominated by the big 3 at the time, but stumbling at the end means a lot.
Everyone I know who finished Soul Eater thought the ending WAS TRASH.
The whole friendship punch thing was super lame and out of nowhere. Like, most people felt the show was 8-10/10 and then wham- terrible ending.
Another good example of an ending wrecking a show's reputation (while also being way more destructive) was Game of Thrones. I hated that they introduced Maka being half weapon and can fight like she was ripped from Prototype at the very last second. Like, that would've been perfect set up for a second season and is a massive revelation.
while i personally think that soul eater's ending sort of fit thematically with what the anime was going for, i would be lying if i said that it was good. it's the exact reason why i intend to read the manga at some point and also why i hope one day it can potentially be re-adapted as i've heard the manga's ending is a lot better
@@elijahbradley704 I for one liked quite a lot the Manga's ending! Certainly much better than the anime's.
I mean, actual Soul Eater fans read the manga. The anime is just meant to get your feet wet.
I just finished watching Soul eater; the world, the characters, the fight scenes, they are all great. My 3 main problems though was when Maka, who always complained about being the most ordinary of the group got like 3 random new powers in the final battle, how a lot of things from the manga changed/dropped, and a couple of questions where left in the air ( Medusa didn't finally die and we don't know that much about death's past) but's 15 yrs old so it is definitely not perfect.
Tbh it was only 2 power ups. One you can chalk up to soul confronting the black blood the episode earlier, the second is kinda an ass pull but maka having weapon blood was at least established since the start.
Its ambiguous at best what actually defeats the kishin in the end. I always took at is him self destructing, which goes along with the freak out that happens before the punch.
Best part of the earlier episodes for me was in the explanation for how souls work for meister and weapons. Maka playing electric guitar with soul in the back like “I raised that girl” is just so fun to see
I've NEVER laughed at an anime, none of the jokes ever hit, BUT when I got to the test episode and saw blackstar write his autograph on the board, i started CACKLING. it was genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever seen, i still laugh thinking about it.
Or when he barged into souls room when he was unconscious talking bout how his presence is enough to bring him back 🤣🤣 blackstar is truly an amazing character
favorite moment in the series fr
Bro you should start watching one piece then
“Oops my fingers slipped” made me laugh

I’m in the artist/animation community and surprisingly this series is still super talked about and has constant fan art. Rightly so, this show slaps

@@ScamboliReviews
Indeed it is
@@ScamboliReviews that's probably a huge factor tbh
I literally re-watch the show AT LEAST once a year (doing it right now). The fights, stories, and characters bring me back every time.
Even the the ending left more to be desired, I still have Soul Eater as one of my go to rewatch shows because it just nails the vibes. The art style, the characters, the music, it's fantastic. You know damn well I knew all those OPs back in junior high, and if you were to play it rn I could still follow along. I ended up reading the manga cuz the show just wasn't enough and it's great. Like some other comments have been saying, I'd LOVE to see Soul Eater get the Brotherhood treatment. I was surprised to hear people don't talk about Soul Eater much because it still is talked about in my friend group, hence prolly why I see Soul Eater vids in my recommended. I hope to see more people talk about Soul Eater, it was a great show and everything about was super stylish and you just don't see that a lot in other animes.
Why Soul Eater was and would still be so damn good
1.) The characters dont all look the fucking same almost as if she each character has a different art style
2.) All have very obviously different fashion tastes in their outfits and casual wear, making them feel real and alive
3.) Very different body types, and not just in different cup sizes for boobs, but actual different body types for men and women. (Muscle, posture, height, weight, etc)
4.) The teenagers actually look like teenagers, some developed, some not as developed, but still look like teens
5.) A girl is the main character of a SHOUJO, and it's not fucking reverse-harem melded in there. We just happen to follow a girl that is running the fade cuz everyone else is throwing hands and shit!
6.) No one is "chosen" or has some divine destiny, everyone is capable of being a weapon or meister and the world is well fleshed out beyond the main gang which makes it open to many potential spins offs, etc
7.) Crackhead shenanigans
8.) The witches have fun designs
9.) They dont give the villains sappy sob stories, just proves that some people are just major assholes
10.) Main character, Maka, does not have a super tragic back story but it still effects her a bit but is still very relatable with having divorced parents and father that is a hoe but still loves his daughter.
Those are my reasons in particular
11) when Dattebayo! fansubs gave up the ghost on subbing Naruto, the week after they closed up shop they uploaded that week's Naruto episode, except it wasn't Naruto it was Episode 1 of Soul Eater. lmao
The author, who made fire force, knew what he was doing
Soul eater is a shonen tho?
I love every point
Plus there's an angry chainsaw that made a remote controlled puppet so he could wield himself. Independent weapon that don't need no meister.
I still love that Maka's dad actually got concerned that he might lose his "Death Scythe" status, only to be reaffirmed by Death that one of his main reasons for keeping Spirit around was because he was (at the time) the only Death Scythe that was an actual Scythe
Great video! This is THE anime that got me hooked on anime in general. The first opening is pure gold, the feel, art, and vibe of this show is fantastic, and I love the characters. I've heard the ending wasn't as good as the manga (yet to read it, collecting all the "Perfect Edition" hardcovers before reading through), but even though I didn't hate the ending at all I can see how it was a little flat and helped it to not be remembered as well. What an amazing show though, it will always be one of my favorites!
Was my very first anime, and still love it to this day. Thanks for covering it, and love your takes lmao
5:13 YOU SAID IT! the fact that soul and blackstar weren't rivals when they easily could've been is just so fucking good.
It's sad because the anime didnt get to some of their best moments. Kid liked and rooted for Black Star because Black Star wanted to surpass Kid (a god) not worship him like everyone else. When Black Star lost faith in himself, it hurt Kid the most.
Honestly the only better shonen duo is Gon and Killua.
@@papo3887 I agree with everything you said
@@papo3887 Black Star and Kid are an amazing example that you can actually make rivals that aren't trying to kill each other 24/7. And when they do fight, it has meaning, importance and contributes to their development. Plus, there are some really cool parallels between them.
@@eletrica_ oh yeah I love it when REAL anime rivals fight, but also root for each other, help each other, support each other, and congratulate each other. Or like Gon and Killua perfect example of best friends that don’t have to become rivals or try to kill each other (unless that happens in the manga which I don’t read). A rivalry that built on supporting each other while also competing with each other is so healthy and a way better rivalry than like say Sasuke and Naruto who were frienemies to rivals to sworn enemies and then miraculously back to being friends somehow which I still for the life of me don’t see how that’s possible I mean if someone I used to consider a friend or even best friend just up tried to kill me, the girl/boy I love, our teacher, our family and destroy our home…uhhh yeah you can say goodbye to my friendship and any mercy from me for the rest of our lives you would be lucky I wouldn’t track you down just so I can kill you myself.
Also it equally focuses on the main group even giving each MC an episode to themselves without showing the main main character(s). Main MC which in this instance is Maka and Soul, but they give the spotlight also to Blackstar & Tsubaki, Kid and Liz and Patty but also give some spotlight to side characters. Cause with some shines they show the main group and side characters and they give us spotlight but like early or mid anime they’ll just stop and start showing only the main character and/or their rivalry which is annoying cause once we do see the main group or side characters again their powerful and we never get to see their journey to becoming that powerful their just shown as being weak first and powerful the next time we see them
@@papo3887 yes, honestly my fav is gigachad blackstar, why did the anime deviate from the manga :( i rrad the manga and the last fight on the moon where blackstar just eats a point blank beam was so fucking hype after carrying the fight
While the humor in the show definitely didn’t hold up well three bits managed to hold up incredibly well and I wanna highlight them:
1. The entire exam episode. That shit was so funny and it is still one of my favorite filler episodes in anime. Every character was so good in that episode and it’s funny even without context
2. The Excalibur bit. The idea that the worlds most powerful weapon will team up with anyone but no one wants to cause he’s that fucking annoying is just plain funny
3. The fact the main location in the series is in Nevada. I don’t think this was meant to be a joke but it’s still fucking funny cause Nevada is just… like that
Anyway petition for a soul eater reboot
oh my fucking god the exam is a masterpiece
Somewhere in Nevada...
Last thing I remember about Nevada is about mass slaughter, improbability and something about a blue boy and a clown rapping
@@xeviusUsagi And a shadow demon that is the true mastermind of everything.
Patty was so funny in that episode
I wish you could've done a longer video essay on this anime. Ik videos take a long ass time but you explain things so well and you could go deeper with this anime/manga too.
Despite the inaccuracies to the manga, Soul Eater is still one of my favorite anime of all time. It's just the characters man. The way the story focuses so much on the relationships they share, and how they are genuinely just a group of friends-it's incredibly refreshing compared to a lot of "friend groups" from more recent anime like BNHA. Soul and Maka are definitely my favorite dynamic (and funnily enough have a lot more romantic chemistry (despite not being written with the intent for romance) compared to actual romance anime), but everyone is so well written that I can't say I hate a single character. Regardless of if it gets a reboot that makes it more manga accurate (while hopefully still omitting some of the more...gross aspects of the manga), Soul Eater will always be near and dear to my heart.
what are the gross aspects of the manga?
@@cat_bowl_ the ending.

I think you mean Anime is great, manga was better and they should redo the anime
The Manga is SO GOOD the anime looks so good but needs a story reboot to match the managa a bit more. We missed out on so much character development
@@lacrimosaknight RIGHT!?! JB too didn’t see that one coming
I loved this show, I think it had great concepts like the weapons being characters themselves, and having various types like Death the Kid's twin pistols, but I think what has actually stuck with me for all these years was just how much STYLE this show had. The character designs and even aspects of the environment like the sun/moon are instantly recognizable even 14 years later, and Excalibur being an annoying goofball was a stroke of pure genius. Like many others, I would absolutely LOVE a remake/Brotherhood style treatment.
What I personally like about the weapon and their users is that they sometimes end up in a relationship, it happened to Maki's parents and *spoilers* it happens with her and Soul. It adds to the realism, since it very likely could happen.
Yesss Out of all the anime’s, soul eater stays with me cause its just so cool.

I’m hoping the reveal that Fire Force is the official prequel to Soul Eater will help bring the series back into the spotlight, the anime was great however it suffered in the same way that the original Hellsing and FMA shows did in that it took a hard veer from the source material midway through due to said source material not being complete. If Soul Eater got a FMAB treatment it would be huge right now
Good news for you, Fire Force the prequel of Soul Eater, but more of an "establishing the world they live in" prequel, than a direct story prequel
@@aaroncastillo4533 I mean Shinra literally created both the world of SE to trap the Evangelist and created Death so I’d argue it’s actually a direct story prequel
There is also Hellsing ultimate. Also if there is a second cartoon adaptation of soul eater, what do you think it will be called? Also the original cartoon, there were stuff that were changed from the start. For example, One of the major differences within the comics and the cartoon is the type of people who are able to consume souls and how one achieves a Death Scythe status. In the comics, one must collect nintey-nine Evil Human Souls and one Witch Soul. Those Souls are on a list made by Death and specify who is allowed to be hunted in DWMA. However, the cartoon introduces the Kishin Egg concept, leaving it up to the student's ability in Soul Perception to find Kishin Souls and hunt them down.
There's also how in the comics, it is mentioned that Mifune has a Strong soul equivalent to ninety-nine souls which is never mentioned in the cartoon. Or how in the comics, the little one that Crona kills when they were little was a baby bunny. However, in the cartoon, the Little One is a small black dragon (which could have been done for censorship reasons). There's also how In episode 6 (which is an adaptation of chapter 3), Death the kid debuts a technique called Black needle wavelength. The corresponding chapter and the comics doesn't introduce the Black Needle Wavelength, and it remains as a cartoon-exclusive.
@@shacharlem4424 I disagree Hellsing Ultimate (which in itself was essentially a FMAB version of the original Hellsing anime even before FMAB) should never be touched again, it’s a classic and I can’t see it ever being made better, as for what would I call a remake of Soul Eater…Soul Eater Resonance off the top of my head. Yeah but that would be the point of remaking it, having it stay closer to the manga rather than the anime exclusive storylines and changes much like how FMAB was when compared to FMA.
I meant that Hellsing ultimate is Also a second cartoon adaptation closer to the comics@@Wezt334. If I were to remake soul eater I would combine elements from both comics and cartoon.

soul eater is the anime that got me hooked on anime as a whole. i've seen it at least 3 times in each dub, and it never gets old to me. thank you for this blast from the past with top notch humor, i haven't screeched out loud in laughter at a video in a while!
new sub right here. keep up the good shit
Soul Eater and Hunter x Hunter were those very few animes that I could just never get tired off
There was a reason why I loved this anime so much I watched it 8 times just because of how much I enjoyed the setting, the story, the character development, everything.
my sister would constantly ask if I was watching soul eater again lol (she only likes the opening )
Back when I cosplayed, Stein was probably my most memorable costume. I built a screw out foam and plasticard and stuck a party clacker inside so it'd crack when I turned it. I had two shirts that I cut up and sewed back together and then used black yarn to get those meaty black line stitches, same for the lab coat. I didn't bring a weapon prop, instead posing for pictures with other Soul Eater cosplayer's weapons because Stein DGAF, he'll use whatever. But the masterpiece? An office chair that I reupholstered to match the aesthetic, with some Halloween decoration chain hot glued to the back so it looked like the one Stein had in his office when he was introduced. I rolled around everywhere in the venue, up the escalator, through the courtyard, in and out of movie screenings, through the dealer's hall... But I Tony Hawked too hard too fast, and I found myself airborne for a singular empty moment, staring up at the blue sky, wondering where in life I'd gone wrong. All before it came crashing down. I was fine, but I heard it. The dull clattering of plastic. I thought I may have broke the chain covering the back of the chair since it was just hot glued. I look over. Pieces of chain, the backrest, the seat itself, scattered to the four winds. Sure... In a way, it had been the ultimate act of dedication to the character. But at what cost?
That is so awesome!
This is so poetic and tender lol
Can you really put a price on perfection
You got into character well!!!! I wish I could have seen it!
this is so metal
I love the halloween-esque theme. I also love Okubo’s work when it feels like all of the characters in his manga can be the MC. Every characters have their own deep backstory, with a lot of unique traits and they play very important roles in the series. Props to the animators as well. Great mangaka combines with great studio = soul eater.
That's how I felt about the characters too, I said Maka and soul are the MCs but that's only because they're the first ones you really meet. Any of the 3 major duo's are pretty much the main character
@@ScamboliReviews yep. Every characters are memorable. A very well made series
Yea, Kid and Black Star could easily be the stars of their own individual shows. Shoot I could imagine a prequel series starring Spirit, Stein, and the other death scythes as well

This video is 2 entire years old and everything said in it still holds up. This show defined anime in a whole new light for me. It took itself seriously, but also made you laugh when you weren't expecting to. And thats the Tea, thanks.
I yearn for an anime remake that stays true to the manga’s story and ending. 9/17 of the “perfect editions” of Soul Eater have been translated so far, so I hope that a remake would coincide with the releases- either right before they’re all translated or right after.
To speak specifically on the music, I cant think of any other anime soundtracks that sound like it (maybe a bit of Bleach). The genre fusions are so rich and cultural, the arrangements are stellar, and the variety of moods is deliciously eclectic. You really feel like you're in Death City and the influences of punk music, hip hop and street culture, and indie experimentation run deep. If you're a music head I'd highly recommend listening to the soundtrack on its own, I'd put it up there with a Cowboy Bebop and Champloo
Fucking agreed. I’ll die to those soundtracks
*Too bad like a ton of the atmospheric and GOAT songs are unreleased*
Bleach will always be on my mental list of highly stylized anime osts

My first ever anime I picked a show and decided to give an anime to try: absolutely hated it. Thought anime was never gonna be my thing.
Then my friend told me to try one more. I picked Soul Eater and watched it with my dad. Now we’re watching anime every Sunday together and have binged through all of Bleach together. This show is what truly started my love for anime.
That's a fun time dawg
Fancy seeing you here
This was also the first anime I showed my son. We also bonded over it. I picked this one because it wasnt particularily Ecchi, and I didn't have to "worry" about if my wife would walk in and audibly roll her eyes at us.
@@dennislacasse2877 what about literally the first episode with Blair in a bubble bath?
Was also one of my first anime. Absolutely loved it for it's characters the first time through. Now that I'm older, I've fallen in love with the setting and atmosphere it created. It's vibe has never been replicated anywhere else. It's probably one of the main reasons I love Halloween season so much.
P.S. Plus that season 1 intro is a BANGER.
Also this one the best soul eater reviews ever, you touch on literally everything that makes the anime good. My biggest take awake from soul eater was it MUSIC omfg no other anime has such custom music. Soul eater feels like its own genere of music. Trumpets everywhere, hiphop beat breaks. There even ambient music that sounds outta this world. The best part is it's used to perfection to drive your emotions.
It was one of my first animes and my 2nd favourite today. It's just so good in writing characters with a diverse cast and the unique style of the animation really brought it to life. I love the chemistry between all characters and the whole halloween vibe is a vibe
Excalibur is so obnoxious and iconic that every now and then I can hear him singing in my head. It's been 13 years already but I'm pretty sure I'll keep hearing him for the rest of my life. Oof.

The fact that people are still talking about this anime like this is proof in itself that it still lives on In our hearrts. I have watched soul eater 50 times in the span of 7 years and i'd just like to say that if any anime deserves a reboot that follows the manga closely, it's this one. Soul eater has remained my favorite series of all time since I was 10. And while it isn't perfect, the characters are lovable and awesome, the story is very intriguing, it has great world building, and the humor is absolute comedy gold -- I STILL laugh at the anime because of how funny the jokes are
I really REALLY want to see the Baba Yaga's castle arc animated, as well as the salvage arc. they are so iconic and have some of the most amazing scenes. Atsushi has such an amazing way of drawing action and fighting, and those two arcs deserve to be in an anime. the manga ending is also 10 times better and much more satisfying.
soul eater: brotherhood p l s
i second this
Reading the salvage arc right now, gotta say i love black star's development so much. Mostly cus i found him to be annoying at the start. BUT HES THE MAN WHO SURPASSED GOD

@@agustinfernandez5115 i watched it over 50 times too, its a good anime and i even named myself after crona. the ending IS kinda bleh both in anime and manga, and i really want to see a reboot with a better one.

Right on. I just finished watching Fire Force a few weeks ago, & now finished reading the manga, so I figured maybe I’ll check out Soul Eater. You convinced me to follow through with it
Shame that the anime was cut short due to budget, and it diverged from the manga at a point too.
Where the manga goes even further than the anime as story plot.
It needs a redo like what happend with Full Metal Alchemist, that was redone into Brotherhood
Fun fact: did you know that Soul Eater and Fire Force are linked as in the same world/universe

Honestly, I remember when I got into anime around 2013, everyone always mentioned Soul Eater. It seemed like one of those shows everyone just knew. However, now when I talk to new anime fans, this show never gets mentioned. In fact some of them don’t even know it exist. Makes me sad. Honestly it’s a reminder that I am starting to get older…
Soul Eater was the end of the silver age in anime. Personally I think it's also the best battle shounen made which is fitting. After 2008, we never got one that surpassed it.

I really hope this anime gets the Brotherhood treatment one day.
The manga was mindblowing for me as a kid. And I really wish we could've gotten a lot of it animated. Maka's Black Blood Dress, Soul's Piano Scythe, Justin Law giving in to madness... so much stuff.
I'm fully aware it's a pipe dream but please let me have it.
who knows man they remade fruits basket not that long ago maybe theres some hope out there
they've remade Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, Shaman King, plus Digimon Adventure 01 (still waiting for that to be dubbed into english), (Sorcerous Stabber)Orphen (now they need to remake Slayers since it's in the same world or there's a crossover at least in the manga), continued Fooly Cooly (not as great as the original sadly), some of these shows are in need of a remake. A remake can breathe life into old series, the classic old version is great but some could thrive being brought back into the limelight for the new generation of anime consumers.
they keep doing it at Disney and some other franchises, why not more anime?
Definitely got the magna on my to read list
@@ScamboliReviews The manga is so good!
I remember when soul eater came out this darker almost goth/ emo vibe was a big part of a lot of animes aesthetic. Code gease, bleach, death note, black butler, hellsing, I could go on. Even in more light hearted shows like Naruto the fan base was less into Naruto and more into Sauske. It’s what drew me into anime, combined with the fact that I watched all my anime on some obscure pirate site it really all felt like some underground thing I “shouldn’t be watching” as a young kid. I’m just endlessly nostalgic for this era / aesthetic of anime
It's a shame anime is out of its emo edgelord phase. I'm still an emo edgelord
@@ScamboliReviews we know Scamboli, we know
Interesting take. That hadn't crossed my mind until now.
Naruto is actually statistically more popular than Sasuke, so it’s a myth that Sasuke is more popular. Sasuke just tends to attract more obsessed fans who are loud and vocal, because some people are easily impressed by supposedly “cool”, “edgy” and “badass” characters. Plus he tends to attract a lot more crazy fangirls.
I feel like jjk is filling that void a little bit
I don't care if people try to convince me otherwise, Soul Eater is my all-time favorite anime. It's the one show I can watch over and over without getting bored. Any time I finish out any other anime, my mind just trails back to wanting to rewatch Soul Eater despite having watched it over and over 500 times. It makes me laugh, cry, and smile and I find it disappointing it has become lost over time. The characters are great, the fight scenes are awesome, the soundtrack is just epic, and I love horror, so I thoroughly enjoyed the disturbing scenes. And on top of all that, this series knows how to hit me hard emotionally too. Every time I hear that beautiful violin soundtrack, I am left in tears. Top-tier anime for me!
2:54 had me dead😂😂😂 I’m watching soul eater now. Great video❤
I never really thought about it until watching this video. But the art and visual design of soul eater probably has one of the most direct impacts on the art I currently make. As soul eater was definitely among the first dozen or so things I drew fanart for when I was in middle school. And the visual concepts in soul eater have stuck with me more than I would have thought before this video
I've had a lot of artists here say that, weirdly
Me too soul eater and d gray man🖤
The artstyle really is amazing
Same! Especially the madness scenes with their crinkly, weird line work and colors have had such an impact on me and my work
i kinda realised that now too, gorillaz, FLCL and this anime had a HUGE impact on the way i draw and like to style pretty much everything i create
“I didn’t even know that Japan had unlocked black people”
I bursted out laughing at 6:06 😹
bro i was not ready for that
i was just rewatching this gold right now
I like that you can explain the anime without spoiling it to much and still have a good entertaining video.
I really wanted them to do a brotherhood treatment on Soul Eater because it had so much source material cut. So many things referenced that didnt end up showing, more stories that had higher stakes, more growth from the group. Bit late now, the magic is gone and the director is too busy making Bungo Stray Dogs 4.
It helps that the animation and fight sequences are amazing since Studio Bones animated it. Add on top an amazing score, iconic openings and endings, and unique character designs and setting rarely seen in anime--no wonder Soul Eater was iconic. And it was one of the only shonen led by a female character at the time, which definitely made it stick out from its contemporaries.
From what I've seen, it's still one of the only female lead shounen, period.
@@joyc.e.7511 promised neverland? cells at work? toilet bound hanako kun?

Great show. I was blown away by it back in the day and it’s still ranked one of my favs. Funny thing was 8 didn’t think I would like it. I thought it was just gonna be another bleach or basilisk or whatever else was popular at the time but as you said it stood out on its own as something wholly unique. If you’ve never watched it do yourself a favor and give it a go
i grew up with this anime. it's still my #1 favorite today. :D
Crona was my favorite character when i was little (probably because his hair was purple and that's my favorite color) and for some reason the only scene that i could remember for the longest time is when Marie and Maka were walking him around the school, and he looks up at the sun :P
This had to be the one anime that really got me to genuinely want to read the manga. Just to see more of the world and characters.
Soul Eater is such a masterpiece in both manga and anime form in my eyes. It's characters and stories have to be one of my all time favorites.
I often find myself comparing Soul Eater to newer series and often find myself disappointed when I feel as though the series doesn't give me the same feeling that this amazing series did.

its always weird to me when newer anime fans are shocked that there were older anime with good animation. if you look at the anime of every decade you'll find a vast array of both well made and poor quality animation even going as far back as the 80's. its really more about the budget and passion behind the work than the time period it was made in.
like in some ways, yes soul eaters animation was kind of unique, but it wasnt really that big of an exception to the standard of the time. most of the examples you'll find of bad mid 2000's anime art style tend to be slice of life or rom coms which as a rule generally tend to have less then stellar animation compared to most action anime.
mid 2000's as always been for me when anime started looking really good with more unique and fluid animation then what had come previously. too much current anime suffers from same face syndrome where you can drag & drop any character from any show and not disturb the art style too much. art styles were a lot more varied in the time that soul eater came out
and about the comedy, i think thats another thing seriously lacking in modern anime. theres not enough gag humor these days they all take themselves way too seriously. moments of levity help ground the high tension stakes and not only endear you more to the characters, but just make it much more fun watch overall imo
I agree. I'd say a lot of my favorite anime is like 80s- early 2000s. There was a wide array of art styles and animation. It's so weird to look down on the old stuff. Even Shoujo/slice of life/rom com whatever had its place, if you're into that kind of thing. It's not action so it's not like they need to go wild on the animation anyway.
Honestly I think the 2000's and early 2010's were pretty much the golden age of anime. Now days I feel like there's too much bad Isekai crap.
@@Jestrath yeah isekais have gotten ridiculous
they just need to look at Bleach and the fullbringers arc, f+cking flawless animaiton for its time
@@Jestrath I'll be the first to admit there's a lot of empty escapist fantasies in that genera, but you'd be surprised at the diamonds in the rough:
"Re: Zero" has the protagonist expect to be amazing, but gives him an existential crisis about being useless despite having checkpoints (warning: gore and other horror elements, especially in season 2)
"Konosuba" is an offbeat comedy where the main characters are the worst in both capability and personality
"Ascendance of a Bookworm" has the main character (the titular bookworm) reincarnated into a sickly girl in a single, extremely well thought out peasant town. So well thought out there's an episode following a noble who's peasant disguise only fooled children, and even then not for long.
"So I'm a Spider, So What?" follows two separate storylines. One storyline follows a lone protagonist who got turned into a spider in basically the hardest cave in the world (almost dies every fight, but she doesn't let that stop her), the other storyline follows the rest of her classmates who also came into this world, and have to deal with more...political problems (warning: transitions slowly from comedy to horror as it goes on)
"That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" is a wholesome comedy where he's really powerful (because of first episode shenanigans), but really chill
Lastly: "Overlord", where the main character is basically the dark lord (minions included, leadership skills are not) while still trying to be a good guy. On a deeper level, though, it's about that nostalgic but sad feeling you get when you remember the good times you had with your friends.
I've been binge watching these and just wanted to say, I think Soul eater is like top 3 best anime.

I was waiting for him to mention the ending. It's sad because all I really remember about it today is that it ended abruptly as if the writers suddenly lost interest and just suddenly powered up the main characters with no explanation to wrap things up so they could go home from work early or something.
