OMG my beaked, snooded, clawed, free breeding heritage Chocolate turkeys are about the most labor free bird ever! I only have a small beginning flock but they forage on about 3 acres, fly, roost wherever, and follow me like dogs as they imprinted on me as day olds. If you think you love dinosaurs, get turkeys, then you will know. 7 months on they are huge and ready for culling / eating. Chocolates are the largest heritage turkey, that is, it is a distinct known strain and breeds itself - why sexually assault your livestock friends if you don't have to eh? Here in the US Chocolates are easy to find if you look. They are only sensitive as poults up until they get their feathers. They exist on the farm free range with chickens ducks cats dogs and goats, are better tempered than chickens and hold their own from day 1. IF you have the space do not be intimidated! The only downside is I must put on clothing to feed them because their beaks are quite the pecker, if you get my meaning. Good Luck and thanks for the tips.

My toms tore the hens while mating or masturbating. The hens had huge tears on each thigh. I never knew until I saw one limping one day because their feathers covered the wounds.
They hide injuries very well. The meat was not usable. I always wondered how will I keep this from happening again unless I seperate them? Still researching this before getting more heritage turkeys. Not getting chocolates again though. The hens were mean as hell to my chickens.
