  • www.ted.com Tod Machover of MIT's Media Lab is devoted to extending musical expression for everyone -- from virtuosi to amateurs, and in the most diverse forms -- from opera to videogames (Guitar Hero grew out of his group). At TED2008 he talks about what's coming next, from new tools for music creativity to the world's first robotic opera. Machover then introduces Dan Ellsey, a young man with cerebral palsy who has found his voice through music created and performed using Media Lab technologies. Ellsey plays his "My Eagle Song" in a soaring rendition that underscores music's power to heal, to communicate, and to inspire.

    Guys you have no idea how it is to work with him in person. Yes, I have, he as come to our school and is conducting one of our 8th grade piece "Amazing Grace" and he does a fantastic job! His head motions have meaning, the way he interacts, it is just a great new experience and I'm glad he's able to do this!

    Danny is an awesome person, I had the honor of meeting him at his sisters wedding. Danny is testament to all that there are no limitations. The title to his song speaks volumes. His music is beautiful. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to met such a wonderful, creative, limitless human being.

    Dan is an astoundingly intelligent and creative person and it is wonderful that this process and technology is here to fit Dan's needs. The world is made up of all kinds of people and musicians and Dan is an incredibly talented musician and composer. Warm thanks to the team at MIT for giving all talented people a chance to succeed in making music and, thereby, reach their potential and realize their dreams. Best wishes, continued success, and BRAVO, dear Dan. Now, Dan, I'm off to buy your CD!

    The ability to create without having any previous knowledge will allow for any one to create music based off of what inspires them. It would allow for people from all over to be inspired by one another and work together to create music. It gives everyone the ability to be creative and find what they enjoy. People will actually get to be in control of what they are learning. It will also allow them to express their interests, and ideas in a way that is equal among everyone. It can help them to understand how music affects our psychology, and feelings.

    ... want to let anybody else who hasnt gone through the same hoops to access this form of expression but in my eyes these people are more technicians thsn musicians/music lovers. It is absolutely the most important thing in the whole world that everybody can instantly and effortlessly control vibration to convey emotion (which is really what music is). I beleive when ideas like this reach critical mass the whole of humanity will change for the better.

    I find the ability to partake in music in varying ways very meaningful. It challenges users to develop new creative processes, as the music can be made in untraditional ways. For instance, I would have to approach a room where when I wave my hand and a sound plays, differently than pulling a guitar string. It makes me wonder how the differing creative processes now being exposed to music will diversify our music genres. I also marvel at the fact that this could revolutionize music education, by making it accessible to all types of people and all types of thinkers; making music is no longer becoming a difficult skill you have to master, but rather a fun way to easily express yourself.
    Although Machover does include some biases in his commentary, I view him to be a very fair-minded thinker. He is creating solutions that are helping people while, being inclusive of varying trains of thought, and using statistics to back his work, all while being conscious of his wording by saying "I think..." and "perhaps". He allows the listener to formulate their own opinion while providing insights that draw him to his conclusion. For instance, when backing his opinion that music is one of the most powerful interfaces for ourselves and the outside world, he discusses the "Death and Powers" project.

  • @rebekahann3984

    I think this video infers that the creative process does not look the same for everybody, and it should be inclusive of all people. What typically comes to mind when thinking of music education is music teachers and students. I think back to elementary school music class. This video changes that idea for me and many other people. The idea of music education could certainly expand when putting these ideas into consideration, and make these ideas more widely-known. Music education could be more than just playing instruments, it could be what the idea of music is to specific people and different techniques. In the video Machover does have some biases, but that does not mean he is not a fair-minded thinker. What he is doing by helping all different types of people with and without disabilities is a good trait of a fair-minded person. He is not biased in the aspect of helping people, he is inclusive of all types of people and helps them express their music.

    that was great. my only concern was that the software sounded a bit like it was suffering from note stealing issues. im sure they could get a deal to bundle hyperscore with some high quality synths and audio libraries.
    basically they need to hook dan up with some better virtual instruments. :)

    I have played guitar for years and im only just beginning to feel that the expression I originally intended to convey is coming out in my playing. It has taken many years of repetetive exercises to familiarize myself with the instrument. I see it as somewhat of an achievement as a technical skill but on musical terms the whole process has just hindered what I was trying to express. I can see how some people would be protective of the time they have put in to their playing and wouldnt.....

    elitism in music has to stop. Artists are exalted because they have put the time in to be able to express and convey emotion in the form of vibration and I beleive this is the most detrimental and misunderstood thing in the music world. every single person has music for lack of better words *in* them and to say only a select few can do this is downright abominal in my opinion. I beleive these people are doing exactly what musicians should be helping others reach their level with minimal effort.

    If ignorance is bliss, then you must be one of the happiest people alive. Dan's disability does not limit his brain or intelligence, just his body. His music is as beautiful as he is, and if you knew if you would know that on top of making beautiful music he also has a terrific sense of humor and is a remarkable man

    And btw, nobody´s saying Dan´s a genius, not in the sense of Beethoven or John Cage anyway. You can´t/shouldn´t really compare professionals and amateurs - of course the latter is going to lack qualities in different ways, that´s why they´re are called amateurs! It´s a little different to create a piece in HyperScore while being disabled, and create a 2 hour opera as a full time composer! Ever heard of feeling good of other´s success?

  • @NickRoman
    @NickRoman Před 16 lety

    This kind of thing, studying music, I certainly find interesting and maybe there's something to be gained from getting people interested in music, but I'll say that the only music I've ever heard was created by actual competent musicians. Every time I see one of these kids faire toys to create sound and people talk about creating music in new ways I just think that's fine but if someone then wants to create music, they're going to use a "real" instrument.

    I didnt like dans song myself but i think that he can do something that he enjoys is great. Same as its good that i can play flute because i enjoy it. I htink that the typical view of instruments needs to change. Anything with purpose like that can be Music. A flute or series of electronic signals as long as it evokes something in someone it is musical.

    reading this I take offense - as Danny's sister I can tell you without a doubt he may b disabled, but he is NOT retarded. He is very intelligent, and just because he communicates differently doesn't make it any less of a communication. You are cheapening the beauty that he created, which has moved many people.

    anti-Semitic comment doesn' t belong here. Or anywhere. I am not a fan of Tod's compostions, but he IS a virtuoso cellist, and his "TED" invention is very exciting to a lot of people. I will report your comment to CZcams as hate speech is not allowed on here. Hatred is what makes our world such a crazy place.
    I hope you re-think your comments.

    Last time I checked, cerebral palsy affects motor function, not cognitive function. So, what is the purpose of Hyperscore? He's perfectly capable of learning to read music.
    His only disadvantage is he can't perform music in any traditional sense. If he's just going to use Hyperscore's shitty sound presets, why not just specify the dynamics, tempo, phrasing, etc. ahead of time instead of "conducting" which is a means to coordinate a group of musicians, not an end in itself.

  • @oabrahamsson
    @oabrahamsson Před 16 lety

    Hm, even though I´m supposed to become a member of the "elite" in music composition (I´m studying at university) - I think this is a great opportunity for people NOT formally trained in music. As Machover says, he creats technical solutions BOTH for the pro´s (YoYo Ma, the robot opera etc.) and amateurs (Dan, children etc.). I don´t think the amateurs will steal our jobs exactly, so what do you fear TuMira85? There have always been pro´s and amateurs, and we have survived anyway...

  • @mauraclegg

    I´m sorry, but what do you expect from a disabled guy, really?! And even if you´re right (which I think you´re not), so what? Isn´t it great that you can make these people happy? See it as a form of therapy and treatment. Why bother? Are you afraid that composition wold be undermined by this? So that when you say you wrote a piece, people won´t consider as skillful as they used to - is that what you´re worried about?
    Get real, for God´s sake...

    Honestly, I stopped watching when he said Guitar Hero. I mean really? Guitar Hero is a joke which is why actual guitarists would never be caught dead playing it. If you want your kid to learn about theory buy him a piano, once they've figured that out maybe a guitar. But if you want to guarantee that your child has poor timing and a short fuse buy them Guitar Hero lol. Give me a break!
