Don't often see someone literally choke up when picking a criterion movie.
Power of cinema, folks, that's why we're all here.
I love hearing that he participated in the Criterion Flash Sale! One of us! One of us! One of us!
I see what you did there (Freaks) ;)
@@VanessaButtino 😁
A man of taste. Loved his acoustic performances during the pandemic. Looking forward to DCFC and Postal Service in Salt Lake City next month!
i'll be at Kilby too! also Vampire Weekend's new album.
i went to one of the shows in Berkeley, it was so amazing!!! I cried when they played transatlanticism
@@inyostudio album of the year
Streetwise is a fine documentary and it is easy to understand the emotion expressed here. Once you see it, you'll know why.
he noted during one of his pandemic livestreams that watching the criterion channel became a nightly ritual for rachel and him. of a line with him noting that the dcfc song "here to forever" was inspired by rachel turning to him, as they watched an old film, and quipping "you know all those people are dead now, right?"
he's one of the best at turning dark into light. transatlanticism (song and album) remains the pinnacle of that alchemy, for me. a spiritual lift, every listen.
Transatlanticism is a BRILLIANT album... my absolute favorite of DCfC. I was lucky enough to do a Fillmore poster for the band a couple of years later... having become a fan based on that magical album. His empathy is so wonderful... reflected not only in his music but the way he speaks about such tough subjects. We need more people like Ben.
@@johnmavroudis2054 oh that's awesome. that version of "we looked like giants" they captured during one of those fillmore shows from that tour feels like the definitive version of the song. i know ben's born-and-bred seattle, but it's cool that SF seems to have a special place in his heart. read once he's a big fan of taqueria cancun and then there's that great photo he snapped during a run through bernal heights of the nuns overlooking the foggy city that became the asphalt meadows cover.
Ben is obviously an empathetic, thoughtful soul. Thank you for caring about these issues... and thanks for giving us a peak into your influences and film choices! Cheers!
This was great! Very well articulated and emotional responses to the films. Also all unusual suspects of picks for the criterion collevtion.
Happy Birthday to Aki Kaurismäki 🎉
I love that he likened this to a kid’s Toys R Us spree 😂
Ben has some amazing taste in movies. And you know he's just like us when he mentions the 50% Off Criterion Sale.
That's funny, I was just thinking he had questionable taste in movies, haha. To each their own.
Brute Force is a great Burt Lancaster and Hume Cronyn prison film noir. Glad to see it get picked again, I think the last one to pick it was William Friedkin (rip).
Streetwise makes me emotional as well because of Mary Ellen Mark, one of the greatest photographers ever.RIP
Kelly Reichardt's Night Moves is my all time go-to-sleep movie, and I mean that in a good way. It's just so quiet and eerie, and I love the soundtrack. A close second would be The Last Picture Show
oh yes!! the Last Picture Show...one of my very favorites..talk about mood! And Cybil is dreamy ❤
this guy’s a man of taste. whew!
Imagine a filmmaker raiding a music catalogue library and talking about it. What a joy to see an artist from a different discipline talk about this one. Criterion really should bring more musicians, painters, artists from other disciplines.
Wow, awesome to see Kaurismäki in this
Today I learned that my favorite musical artist of the past three decades and I share the same favorite filmmaker. Today is a good day
I love you, Ben! Thank you for all the beautiful music you have given to the world. ❤❤
This is like my Avenger's End Game: Gibbard at the Criterion Closet!
I'm glad you were a fan of Nick's "Super Toy Run."
Old Joy... life-shifting for me. Always happy when someone else sees & understands that value 🤘♥️🤘
My favorite living songwriter is in the closet 🎉 Passions merging, world's colliding 🎧🎞️❤️🔥✨ I wish this was 5-hours long lol
Great picks, Ben!
Totally forgot about the Toys R Us sweepstakes. Winning that was every ‘80s kids’ dream!
This makes me want to rewatch Streetwise!
Love Ben and love his music.
Ben + John Waters doing Supermarket Sweep would be the greatest game show.
Love DCFC and love his picks! Bunuel and Kaurismaki. ❤ Shadows in Paradise is a worthy top 10 sitter, I've fallen head over heels for that trilogy in recent years too. Uplifting ordinary people to the status of "deserves movies about them," wonderful.
Dream come true
These closet videos are basically business deals to get filmmakers and celebrities endorse Criterion products. But they are also well-made, unscripted, and passionate display of the love of movies in general. Whoever came up with this idea was brilliant. Do regular movie fans get to visit the closet? I don't think so. You have to be famous to a point where you can get endorsement deals first. Maybe some CZcamsrs and influencers will have a shot someday. I wonder if Criterion "auditions" the people before putting them on.
just listened to some early death cab records
It's really cool to show my 3-year-old the guy who writes the songs he listens to at bedtime. Connecting the synapses
When I was 17 I used to envision a fanvid of Portable Television to Schizopolis. I'm not gonna make it, but now I can't hear that song without thinking of that movie
Kaurismäki, nice find.
As a Hispanic fan, if he had pronounced the Ñ in Buñuel I would have had one of those little fangirl heart attacks 😶
Musicians make such great Criterion Closet guests.
Love the Sean Baker representation!
You're a good man, Ben Gibbard. ❤
Not surprised that he has great taste!
Ben needs movies so much closet...
Still waiting for somebody to pick VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and Beyond.
love you ben
'Le Havre' is a beautiful film.
Thank you, if Benji likes them they must be good 👌🏻
Streetwise is a great pick!!!!!
A+
Great movie 😊
@criterion should choose a regular person…like me…to visit the closet and do one of these. @Criterion hit me up!
I would love to see a regular movie fan do this, but it's not very likely, since these videos are basically endorsement deals. Look at the video description. It has a shopping link that takes you to "Ben's closet picks," which is a webpage set up just for this person. These are basically business deals that help Criterion's bottom line.
He sang the national anthem recently
How bout that
I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Criterion Closet kid ...
Soft Boy Icon
"West-coast Hippy types?" Please, young man, the audience for the Monterey Pop Festival that year consisted mostly of "West-coast flower children." 😉
"If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there
For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair . . ."
Are You Going to San Francisco by Scott McKenzie
First person to cry in the closet?...
“What if we cried in the criterion closet” 🥺
Don't snatch.
Third
You lost me at “Kelly Reichardt is, quite literally, my favorite filmmaker working today.”
And for the love of God, “impactful” is not a word - and he uses it *twice*!
impactful is absolutely a word what are you on about it’s in the dictionary
I know there’s words that flow better like influential but if someone’s talking off the cuff who gives a shit.
@@MaxMax-zo9vq I think you mean “I know there *are* words that flow better…”
And “impactful” may be in the dictionary, but if it is, it is because dictionaries eventually adopt lazy vernacular so as not to concern themselves overly with beating back the tide. May that fucking word never - ever - pass my lips (or my fingertips). Its use is the product of a child’s mind.
@@OldBluesChapterandVerse Glad you're ON THE CASE!!! While Ben is spreading kindness, empathy, and quality music, you are nailing your hobby of being a pedantic troll. I guess we all have our places in life. Congrats... I guess.
@@johnmavroudis2054 We do, indeed. 😉
@@OldBluesChapterandVerse yeah they adapt because language adapts. informal words have become grammatically correct throughout history because that’s how language evolves.
What's going on with " Old Joy " ? It is one of the worst movies I have ever had the dubious pleasure of suffering in my life.
I like it
sorry to hear that
Let people like what they like.
It’s great. Sorry you hate it
There are stretches of Old Joy that are beautiful and stretches that are insufferable. The Reichardt Train is a thing, and I think it must involve marijuana and low expectations. I’ve liked all of her films that I’ve seen, but loved none of them. And there are some people who worship her. 🤷♂️
