    Ah, the old Top Gear, when they did test everyday cars that the likes of you and me could afford, and occasionally test a few exotica, like this magnificent Porsche 962.

    The Tiff of another era. Somewhat more polite and accommodating. I like the older Tiff who doesn't really give much of a stuff about what people think as he has "been there done that - nothing to prove". Good on ya Tiff. You're a crack up on "LoveCars" :)

    Derek Bell stated at the LeMans 2011 that drivers were hitting 247 mph in the Porsche 917 like it was a Sunday drive! Gotta respect these guys

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Před 4 lety

      That was based on gearing and engine revs alone. They didn't factor in tyre slip. The highest speed ever recorded by a 917 at Le Mans was 362 km/h (224.4 mph):
      www.mulsannescorner.com/maxspeed.html
      Corrected for tyre slip, the speeds are pretty much identical.
      But in any case, those speeds are a lot less important than finishing races and winning championships.

      @thethirdman225 Před 3 lety +1

      @Mr Calcium Right. It’s funny how people talk as though 362 km/h is somehow not fast. The Jags did up to 389 and that made them the fastest non-turbo cars (in a straight line). They had excellent brakes and acceleration. Reliability was good too. 🙂 From the XJR8 on, they were always a threat and Walkinshaw always had excellent drivers.

    i reckon that group c racing would have been more popular today than f1 racing if it hadnt have stopped

    • @jemimallah2591
      @jemimallah2591 Před 6 lety +3

      top-level sportscar racing goes in boom/bust cycles. it becomes popular, loads of manufacturers enter, big manufacturers spend ever increasing amounts on it, private entries leave, manufacturers who aren't winning begin to leave, only one manufacturer is left (peugeot/mercedes/audi), then the series gets cancelled or becomes an essentially one-make series (almost the entire 2000s). and as porsche has thrown in the towel now.....we're there again.

    • @jemimallah2591
      @jemimallah2591 Před 6 lety +2

    • @kyongslist
      @kyongslist Před 6 lety

      you are so fucking stupid or just trolling. It was never even popular enough to be considered a "real rival" to Formula 1, as awesome as it was..... The FIA is far bigger than you realize, not everything is a conspiracy you idiot.

    • @nagmashot
      @nagmashot Před 6 lety +8

      in the year befor the rule change (ordered by Bernie) Group C was indeed more popular and attracked more viewers... Bernie forced FIA to push Group C rules that all had to use F1 sourced 3.5l V10... that killed the Mazda rotary, Mercedes V8, Jag V12, Porsche flat 6... the next season Group C was dead

      By 1989 the 962 was a bit old in the tooth and had run its course. Major manufacturers had surpassed it technologically. Porsche themselves had stopped racing them. Only privateers were running them trying to get the most out of them with whatever tweaks they could find. The 956/962 had done its job winning Le Mans six times in a row from '82 to '87. Would be seven in a row if you include the 936 win in '81.

      @@thethirdman225 No the '89 race went to the Sauber-Mercedes-Benz. The 962 did win in the GT category in 1993 though, and it was the last Le Mans race win for the 962/956 a full twelve years after its first. Pretty impressive.
