Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot located in the south-west lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka. The forest is a tropical lowland rainforest and is of international significance due to its rich biodiversity and endemism. It covers an area of about 11,187 hectares and is one of the last viable remnants of Sri Lanka's tropical rainforests.
The forest is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including many endangered species. The forest is dominated by trees of the Dipterocarpaceae family, which are important for timber production. The forest also contains a high diversity of other plant families such as Melastomataceae, Myrtaceae, and Rubiaceae. The forest is also home to several streams and waterfalls, making it a popular destination for hiking and bird watching.
The fauna of Sinharaja is also quite diverse, with a high degree of endemism. The forest is home to many species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates. Some of the notable species found in the forest include the purple-faced langur, the toque macaque, and the Sri Lankan elephant. The forest is also an important bird area and is home to many species of birds, including the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, and the Sri Lanka Spurfowl.
The forest is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. The forest is protected under Sri Lanka's Forest Act of 1875 and is managed by the Forest Department of Sri Lanka. The forest is open to visitors, but access is restricted to certain areas and a permit is required to enter the forest. There are several hiking trails through the forest that are maintained by the Forest Department, and guides are available to take visitors on guided tours.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a vital ecosystem for Sri Lanka and the region, and it is important that it is protected and preserved for future generations. It's a perfect place for nature lovers and researchers, who can observe and study the unique biodiversity of the rainforest.
