  • The results of overwintering ginger in zone 5a under low tunnels. We covered the roots in 6 to 8 inches of soil then put them under the low tunnels. This spring we dug them up to see what we had...

Thanks for doing a follow up! Do many channels do a video showing how they're doing something but not the result! I live in zone 7 and I'm going to try to keep my ginger in an insulated cold frame. All of my plants are in pots so I'll insulate the bottom and against the north facing side.

thanks for watching and replying. I'd love to hear how it goes. I think my area 5b is too cold unless it's in a greenhouse. Check our fruition Seeds channel. THey are in a the same zone and I think they manage to make it work.

thanks for sharing. I'm zone 8A and have a hoop house but still dug my ginger and turmeric up because we're supposed to have a super bad winter according to the persimmon seed I cut open a few months ago. I'll try over wintering in my hoop house next year. It's unheated but still worth a try.

Thanks John. I just need to learn how to plant it. Look up Fruition seeds (fruitionseeds.com) they have a post on growing ginger in zone 5a/b. I'm definitely going to do that

      Hey John!
I don't know if you'll see this comment so many years later, but I'll give it a shot anyway!
I'm also in zone 8, in Texas, and as we all know NOW, your persimmon seed predicted Snowmageddon!!
What a disaster for Texas and surrounding states THAT was!!
Here we are now in our 3rd year of La Ninà, or whatever is making our weather so extreme, and I gotta say, as a gardener, I don't much like it!!
I'm now wondering what you've been doing to overwinter both your ginger and turmeric?
I am doing this same thing this year for the first time.
However, I planted both of these late, and they aren't ready to harvest.
I keep going back and forth as to which road to take on the subject of overwintering them, or just dig them up and storing them.
Our Texas Winters are so unsteady in temperatures it makes it hard to decide!
But I've just gotten word that we're now expecting 10° night temps this week! Yikes!!
I've got a low hoop house set up now, but I expect it to only give me a 10° increase if I'm lucky. And that's just too cold!!
Is there anything I can do to leave the turmeric in the ground in the hoop house with these low temps?
I've got 3 types of Turmeric that I really do not want to loose over the next 2 months of cold weather.
I still have time to dig it up and store it in peat moss if I need to.
But, since it's such a short time (maybe 8 weeks?) until warm temps get here, I'm kinda hoping I won't have to disturb the roots that are already in place.
Plus, I've got a disability that would make digging it up very difficult. So if there's any way to leave it in-ground, and have them remain viable tubers, I sure would like to!
If you could share any tips,
I would be ever so grateful!!
      Thanks!

Sorry the ginger didn't work out - it was a good try and as I live in zone 5 as well I now know not to try it myself. So your experiment is appreciated! Also, enjoyed the bloopers :-). Subscribed!

Thanks for subscribing. On ginger...there is a farm in the Finger Lakes area that grows ginger in hoop houses. They have great success. Unfortunately, I don't have a hoop house. On bloopers...sometimes I end up shooting a scene 5 or more times. There was a blooper video in the works, with my favorite of me falling down a small hill when I lost my footing while picking ramps. The hard drive crashed and I lost about 13 minutes of great bloopers. I guess that would be the ultimate blooper. Dang!

Aww - too bad about the blooper reel! Bloopers are inevitable, so may as well celebrate them, lol. Just don't hurt anything falling down hills (or sitting on awkward objects and edges ;-) ).

Like I've said before...if you see me doing something dumb...don't try it. Thanks!

Debbie M I live in zone 7a &my ginger rarely survives winter, even mild ones. Too many consecutive freezing days. I've starting potting mine up before the first freeze to bring indoors. I buy organic ginger when needed, keep a planter in the kitchen & when I have ginger with buds I put them right into the pot. Started a lot of ginger that way!

Can you just dig them out, cure them, and store them in the garage with some moist peat moss? They survive in the refrigerator. So, I suppose they should survive in the garage too!

That's a good idea. I have some planted now and will give it a go. Thanks for the suggestion!
