  • Sockeye Salmon fishing the Kenai river. First timers get help fishing the Kenai River Sockeye Salmon run Larry From Washington. I was going to go fishing and met a man in the parking lot that seemed unfamiliar with the way to drift for red salmon. He informs me he and his wife have been casting and reeling and were unsure. He said they had caught none. On the way to the river i realize I have extra gear in my car that I loan her. She had a hard time getting around in the water and I had to really stand by her so she would not fall. It was probably too much for her, but I had to stand by her much of the time and tell her not to move much so she wouldn't fall. She got the first fish. They were pretty good for first timers even landing most of their fish without a net! I cleaned the fish for them even. They tried to offer me some money in the end and I refused. Please remember do not accept any money or bartering as this is considered guiding. I said I just wanted them to have a good time on their trip since they were leaving the next day and hadn't gotten any fish yet. They were extremely friendly and I hope I helped add to the enjoyment of some vacationers down on the kenai peninsula fishing for reds. They are tough, but given

      I've been lucky, but someday my luck will run out. Been fishing the Kenai for 22 years and have yet to fall, but someday. The last few years I can feel the drag of the river a bit more each year. Although I have never fallen once I left my $600 rod and reel set up at the river. Someone Scored big. I tied the blank and it has my name on it, but no one ever called, it's been 15 years. I just hope someone caught as many fish on my gear as I did. I would hate for my gear to just be sittig...... Thanks for the comment.......

      @@drmontelongo Hopefully you got up there last year before the canceled the season. It was a pretty low count season last year. I brought my 10 and 11 year old and they weren't impressed. Limit was cut to 1 because so few fish were coming in while we were there.

      If you are into fishing, make sure you do your research. June is the early sockeye run at the Russian and for the most part you need to fish it there to get into the most fish. Best of luck! I always plan my trips for the main run and typically shoot for the 22nd or 23rd of July for the sockeye. Best of luck on your adventure there are a ton of great things to do and if you're up for a charter the fish for the most part are always biting. Very few times have I been out on a charter and not limited out. If you're driving I always stop in the Yukon and bring a boat or canoe and fish the lakes for the pike, lakers, and grayling. Have fun and be safe.

      Too bad I wasn't near you because I would have yelled back at them. Some people think they own the dammmmmm River. Some people go in and think they get 30 feet on either side of them. It's public and we all want to fish and if 4 people can fish instead of one then I'm going to say something. I'll crowd them out. Now if one or two people are waiting no big deal, but when I see 20 people waiting hell yeah I'm a firm believer in packing them in.... Just get near me...... I have more fun helping tourists hook into fish and clowning around at the river than actually catching fish. I've headed down there with a barbie rod, a mini rod, a stick with line, I rig people up and let them use my gear if they're not catching, I've filleted fish with rocks down there and they're all on video on my channel... Check them out.... It's always a good time down there unless someone's being a butt head and don't worry I'm always quick to call out their bologna.....

      I’m going to Klutina the for 5 days starting the 21st of June...we should know by June 8-12 if fishing is going to be good this year. If you have any questions I’ll be more than happy to answer them. Klutina is a very tricky river to fish.

    • @jgryga
      @jgryga  Před 6 lety

      I thought I read it was a slow start to the run so far this year and that the numbers so far were low and that they said the commercial fisherman have had slow reports so far too. But can't remember where I read it. I did check the sonar and it looks like a few fish are starting trickle in past the Miles Lake counter, but doesn't it take a week or so to get up there? No idea though on this river or if this is even the right counter, never fished there. Hopefully there's plenty there on the 8th. Let us know how you do...

      jgryga it takes the fish 13-15 days for the fish to get up to the klutina. On the 8th fishing should be very slow if not dead. But hopefully I’m wrong. Good luck, and tight lines!

      Oh! Sorry just read your post again. I saw the June 8-12 and was thinking you were heading then. I was thinking it was going to be pretty dead. Read it again and see you said you were heading the 21st. That makes way more sense. Tight Lines!!!

    i just use trebble hooks and 50 pound mono, let it hit the bottom and give it a good yank

    • @jgryga
      @jgryga  Před 5 lety

      Suppose you could do that, but that's not as much fun. Plus my buddy got fined for saying 2 cranks and a yank late one evening. He snagged a bunch, kept none because they were all fowl hooked. Since he said 2 cranks and a yank and did 2 cranks and yank when he left they were waiting in the bushes and they ticketed him. I was in the lead and when I cleared the woods I was like where's my buddy. I turned back to find him and there he was with 2 game wardens. I was super confused and glad I was trying to finesse them, they said I was good. I was a bit weirded out. So remember someone could always be watching or listening to you. So use 100 lb test with 5 treble hooks and get your fish quicker, so you can get the hell out of there before someone questions you. You may luck out and get your limit in one throw and just walk straight out. Look at everyone and say See YA!

      @jgryga  Před 3 lety

      No I just refuse to use one. They're big, get in the way and are just a big nuisance to have while you're out there. It takes all the fun away and no net gives the fish an extra minute or so to pop free and continue it's journey upstream. You'll know it's me on the river because I'm the guy that always refuses to let someone net my fish.....Plus have you ever seen how many people fall in the water trying to net or lose fish because the guy netting has no clue.... Plus this way is just more fun.... Thanks for the comment and if you go out try the battle with no net....Once you do it a few times it's actually the most exciting part of the whole battle....

      jack frost if you want to start honestly just go to a local pond and bass fish with simple baits to learn. Fisherman are usually very kind and like helping people unless your out saltwater where you get commercial fisherman who fish for a living. But I understand it can be hard to start in a crowded place so try to find an empty spot and have fun

      Where are you wanting to fish. If you want to fish the Kenai it's pretty simple. Let me know or ask someone down there. You need 20 lb test minimum. I believe they still have the reds closed, but the pinks were coming in and some silvers. Let me know what you were thinking of or maybe you already figured it out.
