W124 is the Mercedes-Benz internal chassis-designation for the 1985 to 1995/96 version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, as well as the first generation to be officially referred to as E-Class. The W124 models replaced the W123 models after 1985 and were succeeded by the W210 E-Class after 1995.
In North America, the W124 was launched in early November 1985 as a 1986 model and sold through the 1995 model year, through 7 November 1995.
Series production began at the beginning of November 1984, with press reveal taking place on Monday, 26 November 1984 in Seville, Spain, with customer deliveries and European market launch starting in January 1985.

The thing you’ve guessed about the mirrors is wrong.Actually this car was produced for left hand drive countries mainly in Germany and as of left hand drive the car will be driven on the right side track of the whole road in spite of driving on the left side of the road as of in our country and the theory was that w124 drivers would mostly keep the car in the divider side that is the the fast lane,to give an assumption that w124 will be driven fast,leaving two -there tracks on their right side and so the drivers will have to get a wide view of the tracks beside.And for that wide mirrors were fitted
Driver side mirror is longer one even on left hand drive Mercedes... purpose is to avoid knock off on the passenger side..not for visibility..both the mirrors cover the same view area, with the passenger side having the wide angle perspective.

The reason these two mirrors are shaped differently is because of purpose and function. The driver-side mirror needs to be accurate for traffic and distance reasons, while the passenger-side mirror needs to provide a wider visual field and to compensate for blind spots and its distance from the driver
