It's wonderful to see how much you appreciate the real music and musicians we were blessed with from the 1960's through the early 80's. Talented people wrote their own music, played it, and sang it. Your generation was robbed of that experience. It never occurred to me that our music would end someday, but it surely did. Thank goodness it's all on vinyl.
Not only that, the talent of these young people was so much higher because they didn't have cell phones, cable, internet, constant noise 24 hours a day. They practiced so there was no need for auto-tune or electronic drums and samplers.
45 years ago I never would have thought I'd see young people, especially young blacks, enjoy what we took for granted. We lived through music history that will NEVER happen again.
This song is such a great rock classic! Kansas is best known for this and two other hits: "Dust in the Wind" and "Point of Know Return." Both feature violin ... not that common in rock, but coming out of the late 60s into the 70s, you're more likely to find flutes and horns and violins. Then, of course, when you get into the 80s the synths start to dominate. Lots of questioning of self, of purpose, and of reality back in the 70s.
After listening to many reactors, I've noticed that for the most part, men react to production elements and instrumentals first. If they react to the lyrics at all, that comes at the end, as a final thought. Women almost always react to lyrics first. Of course, this is not true of every single male or female reactor, it's just something that has begun to stand out to me. So this reactor stands out from the rest with his thoughtful analysis of the lyrics and his internalization of their meaning. Exceptional!
They are indeed from Kansas and in fact they grew up about 25 minutes from my hometown here. My first roommate in college was from Topeka and he even had some of their hand-me-down band equipment incorporated into his massive audiophile stereo system. I remember the first time I heard this song on the radio in junior high, I immediately loved it. Went out right away and bought the vinyl. And then it was in heavy rotation on the radio for a long long time. This is one of those songs where the lyrics hit me really strongly right along with everything else, in equal measure. All of it immediately attracted me. Oh yeah, the name of this album is Leftoverture, ha. Point of Know Return is also fantastic. They have so much really good material and many radio hits.
I was a transfer into Topeka West 73-74. I saw them play in a natural amphitheater on campus and at the school auditorium after the first album. The first house we lived in was directly across from Burnett's mound. That is where the picture of them standing in the wind on that album cover. My roots go back to McPherson / grandparents. The songwriting, instrumentation tightness and overall storytelling album to album is amazing. Carry on where you work. Son/ dust in the wind has had more airplay then most number one hits of that era and continues to today. Why they are not in the rock and roll Hall of fame is a shame and beyond me. A great SNL skit about not enough cowbell. Well I can't get enough Kansas violin along with the rest of the mastery of their instruments pre -computer.
My young friend. I'm soon to be 65. Many lyrics in many songs have changed various perspectives in my life. Music was meant to move you. However it moves you. This music you are exploring tell a story. Some get it some don't. You get it. KEEP LISTENING.

Man, your comments about the differences between today and in my day (I'm 63 yo) really made me feel good. A young person actually understands "us old folks". There's so much clutter in the world now. Social media etc. I grew up with real bands (no autotune etc) and some really good music. (on vinyl with a good amp and speakers) Just because something is new, tech, OR music, doesn't mean it's better. Good sound has taken a back seat to convenience. (digital music)
I'm born '81. I'm blessed to have been raised "come home when the street lights come on." Southern California. Suddenly it's become danger and only danger. I don't understand hurting someone 'just because'. I never will. But these songs harken to my yesteryears. My mom was pregnant with me in her belly at a Def Leppard concert. She got elbowed in the stomach and was worried. Nowadays that would be called a valid excuse. But no. You live. I grew up with Sunday Bloody Sunday and Tom Sawyer blasting through the vinyl seats. And I'm probably the most well adjusted person I know. 🤦♂️

Many of their lyrics are very profound. Take from KANSAS, The Wall : "... And from my favorite song, 💕Lamplight Symphony 💕, which makes me cry everytime I hear it because it reminds me of my father (my mom died 1989, my dad 2016. He had to wait a long time to join her.) This hit when I was in High School. I had an 8-track in my 1970 Plymouth Duster, and went through 3 copies of this. You'll get lots of suggestions to do "Dust in the Wind" next. But I think "Miracles Out of Nowhere" would suit your spirituality best. if you want to understand boomers that came from the trailer parks and the split-level burbs, try out "Can I Tell You" and "Dust in the Wind". They used this song at the end of the 1977 movie "Heroes" with Henry Winkler and Harrison Ford. Henry plays a Vietnam vet returned home but suffering post traumatic stress syndrome, one of the first American movies to deal with Vietnam and PTSD. Those of us who saw it will never forget hearing this song at the finale.
Reaction videos like this drive home the fact that I was very fortunate to have been born in the early 60's and music like this has been the norm throughout my life. Now, in my 60's, I realize how truly blessed I was in this aspect of my life, as well as many others.
Any time you listen to 70's rock, it's always good to pay attention to lyrics, they laid down a lot of heavy bars back then. And yeah we reacted the same way to those lyrics back in the 70's.

This band has many reasons for me loving them. The music, of course. But also: I saw them in December 1980 in El Paso, TX on the band's final tour with their 'most successful' lineup. Several years later, a different version of the band (without guitarist Kerry Livgren and violinist Robbie Steinhardt) played a USO gig on my ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Mad respect to them for that. But the maddest respect I have for this band is in the liner notes of their live double-album, "Two for the Show." In those notes, they dedicate the album to John Hoffert, a young man from El Paso, who lost his eyesight in a traffic accident while returning home from a Kansas concert. I didn't know John, but one of my best friends was in the same car. My friend walked away with a bloody nose. Kansas supported John throughout his life after the accident, above and beyond dedicating the live album to him. MAD RESPECT. Loved these dudes.

We were spoiled in the 70's, we had so many great groups who held themselves to the highest standards and strived for perfection. There were so many groups, you had to be perfect to remain competitive, but we gave into progress and technology and gave too much control while lowering standards. There will never be music like this again until we change priorities and keep things in perspective.

Not bad for Farm boys. Lol Kansas wrote intelligent music. We seen them in the late seventies. It wasn't just a great concert we had a special surprise treat as well. Rick Wakeman was on stage with them. One of the Kansas keyboard players, the one at this concert, used to dance Non-Stop while playing. So to have two flamboyant keyboard players, both playing multiple keyboards at the same time. One wearing hot pants. The other wearing a cape. It was an absolute mind fry. 🤠🐂🏞️
I love it how the organ follows the guitar, great swing. Kansas' Two for the Show is one of my favourite live albums. That metaphor of rising too high is also in their song Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other deep songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio. "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
Hey Brother, I listened to you for the first time just now, what you were saying, I completely get it, of course Im a lot older than you, I’ll be 69 in june, and was able to experience everything new in music from the late 50’s on up, and you definitely nailed it about everything being different back then, but I really enjoyed the way this song went right to your heart, and things you said showed what kind of person you really are, You obviously have a big heart man, its very refreshing. For about a four or five year period, Kerry Livgren was the greatest songwriter on the planet. His band was absolutely remarkable making his compositions live forever.
First let me say I'm 58 years old and grew up listening to and appreciating a group like Kansas! Also, thank you for being brave enough to try something new and be exposed to the genius that is Kansas! Thank you also for not pausing at all and being exposed to the entirety of the song and not ruining it by pausing! There is a lot more to explore groups like Kansas, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and others!

This song really is timeless. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, my friends and I mostly focused on the music rather than the lyrics. As I have grown older, I've paid more attention to the lyrics. Just yesterday, on a nature walk with my wife, I mentioned the quote- "As above, so below," and here it is on your wall. Kansas was a HUGE part of my adolescence in the late 70's/early 80's. Their incredible music and spiritually-infused lyrics may very well have saved my life at the time.
I'm sure he didn't really expect that these words would still be hitting hard all these years later, but I'm sure he's proud but sad that they do. I take these words for granted because I've heard them all my life. It's important to hear them now through your ears now. I have a daughter a little younger than you, I see how incredibly hard it is for the younger generations. These times are turbulent, and lord I don't know how we got here. But music is a extremely influential to people, and I'm just hoping that since reaction channels like yours are discovering these songs, that the music can be as healing for you as it was for us.
A great band! They had two lead singers, Steve Walsh and Robbie Steinhardt (R.I.P.). Walsh also played keyboards, and Steinhardt played violin. In this song they both sing the harmonies, while Walsh sings the lead. On "Child of Innocence" they alternate signing lead. Other songs I recommend are: "Song for America", "Dust in the Wind", "The Wall", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".

This album came out about the same time Boston’s debut album did in 1976. A lot of great songs on this one - one of the greatest albums ever! And Queen’s “A Night At The Opera” came out at the end of ‘75 - “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Music was ridiculously good back then. It’s like we were all living in a golden house music-wise, but we didn’t realize how truly great it was! I stopped listening to most pop music back in the early ‘90’s. Not saying there hasn’t been some good bands and songs since. But the variety, creativity, and jaw-dropping talent just ain’t there these days. After listening to all the great bands and songs back then - it just hasn’t been at the same level since. But I suppose every generation feels that way - Lol!

My son was born in ‘84, my daughter in ‘90. I saw the direction music was taken in the early ‘90 and I didn’t want them influenced by it all. We surrounded them with classic rock and country. Not only playing the music but, discussing the music, the bands and history of the music. We would play music trivia in the car. Today, as adults, they thank us for it. They never gave into peer pressure to listen to the negative music. They didn’t hear the “talent” in it. I’m a firm believer, it’s not only about listening, one must learn about it to really understand!

The video shows you how the lead singer is also a multi-instrumentalist. Great classic selection. It’s criminal that this iconic prog rock band was snubbed by the RRHOF. Another spiritual beauty is Show You The Way by fusion bassist Thundercat with Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. The song and video are gorgeous and uplifting- it’s fairly recent.

Some songs have great music, some songs have great lyrics, and some songs have great vocals. It's rare that a song has _ALL 3_ . This is up there on the all time greatest songs list with Stairway To Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody and Hotel California.
This sing hits deep no matter what. You have to have feet in both worlds!! This one is spot on in how to approach it. I hear you in what you're saying. We are all navigating through this ever changing journey, but the words of the sages hold true no matter the times. Even if it's delivered through music.

I grew up in the generation when this song was played over and over and over. To this day I still love Kansas. Good music never gets old. I understand what you are saying about growing up in your generation. I don't mean to offend, because I went through something like what I am saying when I was your age. Old people told me how everything from my generation was bad, so maybe I just feel this way because I am old, and I can't tell the difference anymore. But I really feel that times have changed, and in my opinion not for the better. We had real music, real food, real connections with people, because we had to go outside. We didn't bury our noses in electronic devices and wall off the world. We actually had to go out and make real friends. Everything today seems so plastic, so cheap, and so fake. Not just products either, but people and music. It seems like the only thing anyone is interested in these days is getting more views. A lot of the music (definitely not all, but a lot) is artists using autotune and lip syncing, with no real substance, musicianship, or message. It no longer feels artistic, but artificial and over produced. It is interesting to hear you say that though, because I was starting to think that it was just me. It is nice to hear someone from your generation recognize this issue as well. Please don't misunderstand, I am not criticizing, but I have been wondering if I just no longer understand what is going on with culture. Nobody seems to want to create anything anymore, or maybe it is nobody wants to support someone creating something really beautiful. Or maybe I just don't get out enough. These things used to come to you on the radio and nobody listens anymore. I know you have recently listened to your first Rush songs, but if you really want to connect with deep lyrics keep listening to Rush. Some of their lyrics are the kind of thing that seep into your soul.
In your own time you should watch the show Supernatural. It ran for 15 amazing seasons & is a great show.. the song, which is a classic & fantastic, will mean even more.
You need to check out Sparks of the Tempest by Kansas. You need the lyrics. It's beyond prophetic. It describes our world today to a T. It's hauntingly on point. Many saw this coming many years ago. It will blow you away!

This hit when I was in High School. I had an 8-track in my 1970 Plymouth Duster, and went through 3 copies of this. You'll get lots of suggestions to do "Dust in the Wind" next. But I think "Miracles Out of Nowhere" would suit your spirituality best. if you want to understand boomers that came from the trailer parks and the split-level burbs, try out "Can I Tell You" and "Dust in the Wind". They used this song at the end of the 1977 movie "Heroes" with Henry Winkler and Harrison Ford. Henry plays a Vietnam vet returned home but suffering post traumatic stress syndrome, one of the first American movies to deal with Vietnam and PTSD. Those of us who saw it will never forget hearing this song at the finale.
Reaction videos like this drive home the fact that I was very fortunate to have been born in the early 60's and music like this has been the norm throughout my life. Now, in my 60's, I realize how truly blessed I was in this aspect of my life, as well as many others.

This band has many reasons for me loving them. The music, of course. But also:
I saw them in December 1980 in El Paso, TX on the band's final tour with their 'most successful' lineup. Several years later, a different version of the band (without guitarist Kerry Livgren and violinist Robbie Steinhardt) played a USO gig on my ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Mad respect to them for that.
But the maddest respect I have for this band is in the liner notes of their live double-album, "Two for the Show." In those notes, they dedicate the album to John Hoffert, a young man from El Paso, who lost his eyesight in a traffic accident while returning home from a Kansas concert. I didn't know John, but one of my best friends was in the same car. My friend walked away with a bloody nose. Kansas supported John throughout his life after the accident, above and beyond dedicating the live album to him. MAD RESPECT.

We were spoiled in the 70's, we had so many great groups who held themselves to the highest standards and strived for perfection. There were so many groups, you had to be perfect to remain competitive, but we gave into progress and technology and gave too much control while lowering standards. There will never be music like this again until we change priorities and keep things in perspective.
In the state of Maine our high school senior year we pick a song that we feel represents our class from all of the years we were together from kindergarten all the way up to graduation 1977 my high school class pick this song This was an amazing band I would highly recommend you go into their little rabbit hole many great songs try point of no return, the wall, What's on my mind, Their sound was really big, kerry livegren was an amazing guitarists as well as song writer this band was very spiritual try the wall....God bless great reaction one of my favorite songs still today.

We seen them in the late seventies. It wasn't just a great concert we had a special surprise treat as well. Rick Wakeman was on stage with them.
One of the Kansas keyboard players, the one at this concert, used to dance Non-Stop while playing. So to have two flamboyant keyboard players, both playing multiple keyboards at the same time. One wearing hot pants. The other wearing a cape. It was an absolute mind fry.

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎

For about a four or five year period, Kerry Livgren was the greatest songwriter on the planet. His band was absolutely remarkable making his compositions live forever.

Also, thank you for being brave enough to try something new and be exposed to the genius that is Kansas! Just yesterday, on a nature walk with my wife, I mentioned the quote- "As above, so below," and here it is on your wall. Kansas was a HUGE part of my adolescence in the late 70's/early 80's. Their incredible music and spiritually-infused lyrics may very well have saved my life at the time.
You should listen to "Sparks of the tempest" came out in 1977, but you'd think it was written recently.

I'm sure he didn't really expect that these words would still be hitting hard all these years later, but I'm sure he's proud but sad that they do. I take these words for granted because I've heard them all my life. It's important to hear them now through your ears now. I have a daughter a little younger than you, I see how incredibly hard it is for the younger generations. These times are turbulent, and lord I don't know how we got here. But music is a extremely influential to people, and I'm just hoping that since reaction channels like yours are discovering these songs, that the music can be as healing for you as it was for us.
A great band! They had two lead singers, Steve Walsh and Robbie Steinhardt (R.I.P.). Walsh also played keyboards, and Steinhardt played violin. In this song they both sing the harmonies, while Walsh sings the lead. On "Child of Innocence" they alternate signing lead. Other songs I recommend are: "Song for America", "Dust in the Wind", "The Wall", and "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)".

This album came out about the same time Boston’s debut album did in 1976. A lot of great songs on this one - one of the greatest albums ever! And Queen’s “A Night At The Opera” came out at the end of ‘75 - “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Music was ridiculously good back then. It’s like we were all living in a golden house music-wise, but we didn’t realize how truly great it was! I stopped listening to most pop music back in the early ‘90’s. Not saying there hasn’t been some good bands and songs since. But the variety, creativity, and jaw-dropping talent just ain’t there these days. After listening to all the great bands and songs back then - it just hasn’t been at the same level since. But I suppose every generation feels that way - Lol!

My son was born in ‘84, my daughter in ‘90. I saw the direction music was taken in the early ‘90 and I didn’t want them influenced by it all. We surrounded them with classic rock and country. Not only playing the music but, discussing the music, the bands and history of the music. We would play music trivia in the car.
Today, as adults, they thank us for it. They never gave into peer pressure to listen to the negative music. They didn’t hear the “talent” in it. I’m a firm believer, it’s not only about listening, one must learn about it to really understand!

I grew up in the generation when this song was played over and over and over. To this day I still love Kansas. Good music never gets old.
I understand what you are saying about growing up in your generation. I don't mean to offend, because I went through something like what I am saying when I was your age. Old people told me how everything from my generation was bad, so maybe I just feel this way because I am old, and I can't tell the difference anymore. But I really feel that times have changed, and in my opinion not for the better. We had real music, real food, real connections with people, because we had to go outside. We didn't bury our noses in electronic devices and wall off the world. We actually had to go out and make real friends. Everything today seems so plastic, so cheap, and so fake. Not just products either, but people and music. It seems like the only thing anyone is interested in these days is getting more views. A lot of the music (definitely not all, but a lot) is artists using autotune and lip syncing, with no real substance, musicianship, or message. It no longer feels artistic, but artificial and over produced. It is interesting to hear you say that though, because I was starting to think that it was just me. It is nice to hear someone from your generation recognize this issue as well. Please don't misunderstand, I am not criticizing, but I have been wondering if I just no longer understand what is going on with culture. Nobody seems to want to create anything anymore, or maybe it is nobody wants to support someone creating something really beautiful. Or maybe I just don't get out enough. These things used to come to you on the radio and nobody listens anymore.
I know you have recently listened to your first Rush songs, but if you really want to connect with deep lyrics keep listening to Rush. Some of their lyrics are the kind of thing that seep into your soul.
