As twisted as these songs seem it's how people deal with emotions and express what they're feeling without actually acting on them. Imagine being in that situation and hearing a song that portrays how you feel and the comfort and expression it can give you. Great breakdown Mel, I think you got a great understanding.

Finally, a reaction that doesn't react to the version that cuts out the rant.
This is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them.
In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!") A good example of this would be the school shootings that go on around the country.
Getting "Down With The Sickness" means accepting people for who they are so we can all function better.

people like to drop this on unexpecting reactors because of its shock value. of which, you two were hit hard with it. with that said though, Mel, congrats on catching the message of the song. child abuse is a real problem, a silent problem, that needs remedied. now, not all Disturbed songs are this shocking. i would suggest Land Of Confusion (Genesis cover), also The Game, and two of my personal favorites Inside The Fire and Get Psycho. Inside The Fire is also another super deep message song...but without the shock lyrics, i promise

for the record this song is really just heavy metal in its purest form lol, just remember that theres usually always a context to the lyrics because its easy to forget when you listen to heavy metal XD
some people probably already mentioned this but "mother" is a reference to the government, typical Disturbed song subject too (they talk alot about politics and human suffering except in the case of heavy metal it can often be subtle and indirect as you have now experienced) and the very goal of the band is to "disturb" the society by saying things that will force people to think and without any form of sugar-coating hence their band name "Disturbed"
