  • (2020 interview)
    Videography by Wild Rice Films.
Douglas Murray discusses the dangerous weaponisation of identity-based grievances in today’s society. This interview, conducted by Inaya Folarin Iman, took place in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing, as protests erupted all over the world. He argues that the dominant narrative of Western society as fundamentally negative stems from a misunderstanding of history. Murray also contends that there is a quasi-religious fervour in society, with attempts to create a new religion and enforce it in the public square.
Douglas Murray is a British author, conservative political commentator, and podcast host.

@theequianoproject and @ada, things are much worse now. The UK has specific problems that other countries do not have. The UK has been the 2nd slowest growing economy in Europe and one of the slowest growing economies in the world per capita since 2008. The UK suffers from massive brain drain. 83% of foreign students leave Britain within 5 years of arriving with a much higher percentage of foreign students leaving Britain over the long term. Britain has a hard time retaining talented immigrants long term. Plus many multi-generational Britons are leaving for foreign opportunities. The UK has a lower per capita income than African Americans and South Koreans. The UK's share of global income and wealth are dropping very fast.
The UK is rapidly in the process of being economically dominated by foreigners, immigrants and BAME. Ethnic English don't have any "privilege" in Britain, and do worse than Nigerian Britons and Ghanaian Britons.
Ethnic English need to stop talking about their non existent privilege and start discussing how to achieve perfection, excellence, competence, capacity, values. So do British people in general. This would be a far more useful conversation and prism than the current woke orthodoxy in the UK.
I also hope the ethnic English humble themselves and study successful people around the world; be inspired by them and learn from them.

It always bothers me when clips of old videos are proposed as new. I'd like to see the date of recording in the first words of the title. It's especially important to do that in this case as Murray's views continue to evolve as does the info we have got about the death of Floyd. The value of this clip is now historical, one link in a chain, it isn't a new development.

No, in my guess, only 10% of the people in the U.S. understand this. Maybe in the U.K because it is smaller population and they have the BBC they do, in the U.S we havent because there is no method to communicate truth/wisdom and no way to transcend pluralism unless the elites choose to give up power, - stop weponizing this meme, in which they will not. Good clip despite being 4 years old. Thanks

However, leaders make decisions & take ACTION, knowing that whatever idea may have motivated those actions will not fully come to fruition. Stop trying to motivate yourself to act by having the "right idea" beforehand. Take action and you'll FEEL better afterwards, regardless of what illusions occupy your conscious mind.

From a historical study of weapons and political dynamics, Carroll Quigley concludes that the characteristics of weapons are the main predictor of democracy. Democracy tends to emerge only when the best weapons available are easy for individuals to buy and use. This explains why democracy occurs so rarely in human history.

Love this! Douglas is very well educated in a broad sense, intellectual man, because he can draw conclusions from subjects he studies. Lately people became considered educated if they are proficient in certain field, like medicine, law, tech but have very shallow perspective on humanities, like history. Even people studying humanities are turned out to be ignorant on the subject, depending on who is teaching them.
Also Douglas is extremely patient with this young journalist. More so than with others.

I'm paraphrasing here but.. "Instead of being the erasure of things we don't like, it has now become the exaggeration." Thank you for giving me the words to articulate that. Another example he didn't mention, was Universities previously being the bastion of critical thinking and free speech have now become the breeding ground of Cancel culture and tropes. I see it with the Israel Palestinian situation too, i am sure a genuine concern for humanity has turned into antisematism and blood libels for some. It's all too extreme. I agree wholeheartedly with Douglas advice to "dial it down".
A look at Western History over the last Century and you can see every swing of the pendulum in a civil rights movement always preceeds a swing in the opposite direction as a counter measure. The way things are going, the swing back may be harsh.

I think fairness should be the ideal. When you try to manipulate the world to put things right as you see it then you are in danger of becoming tyranical by introducing something like 'positive discrimination' you respond to perceived discrimination with real discrimination. By trying to address one problem you often create another problem. We need to find a middle way that is fair for all but in our society the people speaking from the middle way tend to be shouted down because they are not on either of two sides waging war with each other from extreme positions.

Chauvin was thrown under the bus by his employers, his union and the legal system. His training to deal with demonstrably violent and aggressive prisoners was to pin them to the ground. He followed his training. Floyd was off his head on Fentanyl and was a regular user. His cardio-vascular system was very, very poor. He died due to heart failure brought about due to his drug use. But this didn’t fit the narrative. The direct result is that more black are being murdered than ever before because police are now very reluctant to deal with the real problem. Meanwhile nonsensical CRT is being stuffed down our throats and we are well our way to hell in a handcart.

A footnote that you might consider is that during the civil trial where George Foyd's family sued the police, it was discovered there were two autopsies. The one used in a criminal trial was arranged politically. George Foyd died of a fixation brought on by a fentanyl overdose. In short, he swallowed his stash so he couldn't be charged. By the way, the cop didn't do something wrong. If a man says he can't breathe, what you think he's thinking or not, you call for a medic.
