    Composer: Hussein Janmohamed

    Sun, Supreme Light.
Let my eye meet with yours,
    my Lord/Master/Beloved
    Out of the depths
have I cried unto Thee, O Lord:
    Lord, hear my voice.
Toronto-based composer Hussein Janmohamed draws on the varied facets of his cultural and spiritual heritage and his personal musical experience in composing; Sun on Water “finds its inspiration in the mystery of winter sunrises” and depicts a sense of yearning for “ultimate union” between sky and water, light and dark, and symbolically a lover and their Beloved. The texts and musical influences come from Western choral music, Sufism, Middle Eastern rhythms, and Hindu and Indic Ismaili Muslim traditions.

Conceived in collaboration with the composer, this performance of Sun on Water includes a "singing" bell (English handbell) in lieu of singing bowl, and improvised percussion elements including wind chimes and suspended cymbal.
