I remember seeing that sketch, it's from Roseanne's episode right after she sang the national anthem all shitty at a baseball game as a joke. And that was one of the comedy killers they mentioned in the sketch lol.
We might not have Mr. Show, or Arrested Development OR Better Call Saul without the SNL contributions of Al Franklin and his writing partner, Tom. Great stuff, glad Al escaped the living hell of DC.

I don't get why he was so edgy as a comedian and as a senator he avoided being funny and apologized for everything, he got totally played, it was a perfect moment to say "it's funny and I'm tired of pretending it isn't", he could have used that edgyness as a senator

No. He was wrong. One of the many issues with SNL. The sketch should've run. From the hundreds of anecdotes I've heard versus what was aired, it seems the majority of the most interesting sketches never made it. It's sad. I've no idea how or why SNL continues. It's awful.
