      I upgraded the tuners and bridge on an old Squire strat that used to be a friend's. Turned that piece of crap that wouldn't tune, let alone stay in tune, into a rock solid guitar I play all of the time, I never touched it before except to move it out of my way! the 19.1 ratio Kluson tuners really helped and the original tin bridge wouldn't even intonate because the plate was so soft, the screws drilled into it rather than adjust. $25 Genuine Fender bridge changed that!

I removed all the old "cool" stickers that I applied as a teenager, which left all the large paint chips to show, relic-style. I then applied the copper foil. Installed Graph Tech saddles and trees. Then, one of those loaded black pickguards with switchable polarity switches that gets "68 tones". Stringjoy strings to finish.

    That's a real beauty now! I wouldn't change a thing. It looks and sounds great!
    I recently reincarnated a dirty, rusty Samick Avion Les Paul lookalike that I got in a pawn shop for $80 USD. I replaced the rusted bridge and stoptail because the bridge radius didn't match the fingerboard. I used gold plated Gotoh hardware because the guitar had a pretty quilted veneer top, and I replaced the sketchy Duncan Designed humbuckers with gold plated GFS Fat Pats. These clocked in at about 14K bridge and 10K for the neck. I replaced the factory tuners with a set of 40 year old Ibanez Velvetune machines, gold plated with nice pearloid knobs. (I'm sure you're too young to remember Velvetunes, but they were top of the line back in the late 1970s to early 80s.). The switch, knobs and pots were all fine, but I'd like to replace the switch with a gold Switchcraft model, and replace the cream poker chip with a black one. I replaced the cream pickup rings with black ones, ditched the cream pickguard to show off that golden quilted top, and now I have one killer guitar. It is full Les Paul thickness but it only weighs a little over seven pounds. Altogether I spent about $140 USD and ten hours working on this, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars!

    My very first guitar was a 1996 Squier. It was the first year Squier was made in China. My dad walked into the local music store and said, "Give me the cheapest electric guitar you have." They tried to sell him a practice amp with it and he said, "no. My son will get by without it." So my first 7 months of learning guitar was on an electric guitar with no amp. I eventually had to find an amp next to a dumpster. Growing up poor was rad.
    I still have that 96 Fender, just recently having to change the pick guard. It still plays wonderfully and while I might not play it as often as my Epiphone Custom pro.... I still pick it up pretty often. It's a great guitar.

    Indeed, the only issues I have with it are the frets being somewhat worn out (that's what's makes me worry), a little rust here and there and the lack of insulating coating. I've thought about changing it, but it just feels like home.

    I am doing up a very similar squier, it’s from 04’ . It was originally red but i have painted it turquoise with a matching headstock, not complete yet but it’s coming along great

    Awesome job! I like the brass bridge, but it needs at least one other brass item somewhere on the guitar to tie it together. Maybe brass tuners or tuner knobs?

    Great video! I just picked up a 2010 Squire Bullet Strat for Australian $75 (35 pounds). Very much the same deal with rusty parts, but the neck is really good as is the fretboard and frets, and it still actually works, so I'm going to give it a bit of your treatment and see how it goes.

    Turning a beat old Squire into a professional level instrument is the sh*t I live for Lol.
    Some of the Spectrum brand S-type guitars make great conversions as well.

    I literally just did this exact same thing to my friends strat. It was in damn near the same condition too. Only difference is I used black tuners, knobs, and pickup covers.

    I would love for this series to become one of your main series. Kinda like the long forgotten Will it shred guitar.
    This makes me want to fix up my Behringer fender clone guitar, but everytime I go up to it and check it I usually put it down and go back to play my real fender.

    Thing about Squiers is it depends on when and where the were made and the sloppy quality control that means that no two feel the same. A good mate of mine had an 80s Japanese Squier and the neck was one of the best I'd ever played on a Strat.
    I like the David Gilmour vibe with the black pick guard, but I also think YES! Do it! I'd like to hear that with humbuckers.

    I had the same guitar that I also upgraded an changed to a Tuxedo look. I use it as my open G guitar since it has a slightly narrower width at the nut.

    On the Squier Modders Facebook page, they occasionally will throw a photo of Dave Murray playing a stock Squier (probably from 1982/83) as well as George Harrison.

    My first electric guitar was a sunburst version of this exact guitar, those 20th neck-plates were indeed plastered on everything in 2002, Still play that guitar to this day even though i have a lot better ones to hand, it's surprisingly nice to play.

    Wow!! I’ve never heard of the reverse wound/polarity middle pickup on a strat! How can you tell if your middle pickup is like that? Is it common?

  • @ThatMattGoodMusic
    @ThatMattGoodMusic Před 3 lety

    I have one from the same year, the neck is SO nice. I've steel wool'd the back a bit to give it more of a satin feel - and I played it so much with my punk band the frets are pretty shot at this point. Might have to pick up some of those saddles as I do like brass saddles. I have the original pickguard but I hacked off a big chunk around the neck pickup so I could mount it straight to the body (in 2013 I thought this was a good idea, now I would have probably done it a lot neater with a pickup ring!), and like yours it has cracked, but because of how much I've gigged it it's completely shattering where my pick has hit it, and from taking it off a bunch to modify the wiring.

  • @Merjia
    @Merjia Před 3 lety

    Black on black alone looked amazing, then the brass saddles just took it to the next level.

    Look, I hate squires and Fender guitars in general. Yet no guitar, no matter what it is deserves that kind of neglect. Thank you for restorting her. I appreciate it.

    I got a sunburst version of the same model/year into my repair shop for a setup. I was shocked with how well it played and even sounded, maybe that was just a fluke but it played as well as many US strats. I usually view older squiers as rubbish, but honestly there are some great guitars out there.
