  • This winter fly fishing in this river is incredible! It holds thousands of steelhead-like rainbow trout during winter and we had some of the best fly fishing I have ever had!
    #flyfishing #steelhead #troutfishing #rainbowtrout
    The rainbow trout run up from a big lake to spawn in winter and behave a lot like steelhead except they live their lives in a lake and not in the sea. The river's lower reaches remain open for fly fishing during the winter, allowing for some excellent trout fishing as the fish run up.
    The video was filmed with a concession from Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board.

    River of 1000 trout is right, its going to be a big learning curve on all the CNI rivers after the floods, I hope it hasn't affected this years spawning survival to much. Great to catch up with you in Turangi and all the best for the future of the channel.

    That immediately reminded me of the "steelhead" of Pennsylvania and Ohio in the US. They are very similar to these trout but the great lakes are quite a bit saltier than a normal lake. Still, the instinct a lot of trout have that turn them anadromous doesn't go away regardless of the location. That's why South America has runs of sea trout and steelhead since that instinct seems to be present in a percentage of all trout. Or I believe that's roughly the basic biology that causes many of them to do so, that some trout are born with the instinct and some aren't. I know even brook trout are known to run in the oceans in the few rivers that they exist in that connect with the oceans. And again like these rainbow trout, the brook trout of the great lakes are very similar with many of the biggest brook trout ever caught coming from the great lakes and migrating up the Nipigon river. It just runs in those salmonid's blood to do that and my goodness the growth they experience is staggering. Look at those fish and in those numbers. I know you said it wasn't your day but any day on water with that level of trout fishing is a good day! Not to pretend like you take it for granted, but what an incredible video and incredible fish.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  Před rokem

      Thanks Adam, appreciate your insights. The trout here I believe are decedents of California river steelhead. At least so I am told. They behave much like anadromous fish do. They live their lives in the lake growing fat and big on the food there and run up the tributaries to spawn. The do still look like rainbow trout though when they run up, just big. The photos I have seen of large steelhead looks quite different and much larger. I don't know all that much about the subject though but I know the fishing is great and has been exceptional this season. We are very lucky to have such an incredible fishery. I saw your message about the indicators, I'll respond later today. Tight lines and thanks for taking the time to comment and hope you enjoy all the videos, more coming soon.

    • @adamg7984
      @adamg7984 Před rokem

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Thanks a lot buddy! Yeah the true steelhead are much larger and they tend to lose all those nice spots and stripe along the sides when they're fresh from the ocean. They only start to look more like a huge rainbow trout after they've been back in the river/creek for a while. The reason I put steelhead in quotations is because some people don't consider the transplanted steelhead of the great lakes to be real steelhead, but they do in fact come from steelhead broods from many years ago and are distinct from the local rainbow trout which of course are also transplanted as their native range is the plains of the US to the pacific coast.
      Though, I do think biologically rainbow trout can birth steelhead and steelhead can spawn rainbow trout. I may be wrong on that, but I remember looking into the differences or lack there of and if rainbow trout were genetically identical to steelhead. And I do believe they are, however, in adult hood, even adolescence, they're much different fish. Having caught even some of the 16 or 17 inch steelhead from the great lakes, it's unbelievable the additional power they have. And if nothing else, they absolutely have a distinct appearance from the majority of rainbow trout, again unless they've been in the creeks and darkened a lot. Even then, I don't remember if they ever regain their spots I'd have to double check that.
      All I know is from what I remember, they're fairly odd creatures, the rainbow trout. Genetically identical are steelhead and rainbow trout except I think just a hormone or some thing else genetically/biologically that dictates anadromous or diadromous fish. Yet the difference is incredible. If you ever get to fish for steelhead, especially the real deal ones on the pacific coast of the US and Canada, they're something else entirely. As tough and hard fighting my biggest rainbows have been, they've never compared to even a little 15 inch first year jack steelhead. A little one like that can put you in your backing in seconds and will unless you horse it.
      I never forgot the first time me and my dad fished for the great lakes ones and after he caught about a 22 inch steelie, he was trying to horse a little 15/16 inch one in like he could just over power the thing. It absolutely worked him over and broke his line lol. It was incredible.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing

      Thanks for the great info. I think these trout are similar in nature to the Great lakes fish. They are also very silver and sometimes spotless when the leave the lake and turn dark in the river. A silver fish here is referred to as a fresh, being freshly up from the lake. They average around 3.5 - 5lbs and this season there have been good numbers of 6 and 7lb fish as well. I don't know the length as we tend to weigh fish here. Not sure why. The difference here is that the lake is entirely fresh, no salt but just productive with lots of food and baitfish. They are also super strong fighting especially in the currents and the only place where trout have put me into the backing regularly. Hopefully I make it over one day to come fish for steelhead. Tight lines

      @adamg7984 Před rokem

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing You too buddy, I always enjoy talking fishing, learning what others experience especially when they're on the opposite side of the globe.
      Yes I would imagine they're very similar, that's what I've noticed myself about most rainbow trout. They all tend to look similar and behave similar. Anadromous trout always turn a much more silvery clean color, and as you say those are the fish that are coming in fresh/freshly run. Some places just use different terms for the same thing, but the silvery rainbow trout are fresh in from the oceans or lakes. But as you say and as those trout show, you don't need an ocean, just a big lake for the same effect. That's exactly how the steelhead of the great lakes are. They just go into the great lakes of the US and Canada and then migrate into the streams and rivers that feed the great lakes to spawn. The only difference is many of the spawns aren't successful due to pressure from fisherman and/or lack of water quality where we are.
      When I said the 16/17 incher, that's a first year returning fish which would be about 2 - 2.5 lbs. Though I don't know the kilogram conversion but that should give a better idea of the power they hold, even the smaller fish. Though, I have little doubt those trout you're fishing for from a big lake too are just as powerful. I really don't doubt it. I think the only steelhead/rainbow trout that are probably even bigger and stronger are the pacific ocean steelhead, the original steelhead.
      I also saw those trout run you into your backing and didn't doubt they did haha, I just was marveling how the steelhead we've seen here, even at little sizes, will easily put you into your backing and it's an amazing difference. Regular trout that we have over here need to be two feet, 4-6lbs to run most people into their backing. But the steelhead/anadromous rainbow trout can do that at a much smaller size, like 2-3lbs.
      But, the trout are so big and healthy in New Zealand I'm not sure if you see many small trout or fight too many but all I can say is fishing for the regular rainbow trout often here in Pennsylvania, they only have about 2/3rds the power to weight of a their steelhead brothers. And I want to emphasize again that the fish we have aren't close to the strength and quality of New Zealand fish because many of them are brood stocked and not stream born and raised. Or they're stocked as adults. Where I am, we just don't have the quality of water or the respect from 99% of fishermen to sustain wild trout.
      It's sad but most dick heads I see use huge barbed hooks to catch little 9 inch trout, drag them on dry shore, don't wet their hands, squeeze the fish to hold them still and often kill them even if they release them. That and people are happy to harvest 5 trout a day multiple days a year where I am and don't care about longevity let alone sustainability, so every year we need new fish. Anyway, that's just another digression, but it's all to say New Zealand is blessed in how it treats it's incredible trout.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  Před rokem +1

      @@adamg7984 These lake trout definitely have some extra gas in them and fight very hard indeed. We do have a few rivers around where there are some similar size and strenght resident rainbow trout. We are very lucky here with the amount of great rivers and low human population and average size of trout. For the time at least. Like any other country New Zealand is focussed on growth so won't be like this forever unfortunately.

      Hi Dave, that's great to hear. Gear is fairly simple. 6wt rod, floating line with and aggressive taper to turn over the heavy flies. 9ft 3x tapered leader plus 4.5 ft 3x tippet to the first fly, which is a heavy fly in this case a double tungsten beaded Simon's ugly style nymph. Then 30cm off the bend of that of 3x tipped to an egg fly. Globug, soft eggs all of them work. The indicator is a NZ strike indicator with wool and tube but any yarn strike indicator will do. Hope that helps. The key with these winter fish is to get down to the bottom quick as that's where they are
