I don't think that's a fair reading of this song. Jamie probably had to work hard to become a better author and get noticed by a publisher like Random House, but most of that work took place before the events of the film and is not important to the plot. I agree with your broader point that those who work hard and succeed have difficulty understanding what is it like to work just as hard and continually come up short. Still, there's a difference between acknowledging that gulf and arguing that to succeed early in life is to have everything literally handed to you.
