  • Since my wife and I moved into our newly renovated home, I decided it was time to shoot the updated "My Complete Bar" video. It was quite an undertaking to move all my bottles and wire up the shelving for lighting but I'm happy with the end result. I hope you enjoy the updated video.
    As of 07-01-2014, my current bottle count stands at 1,401 total bottles. I have 873 different ones in the bar and another 528 in back stock. So I finally got hold of the latest "Orphan Barrel Project" release and decided to shoot a review on all four of them. We start with the 26 year "Old Blowhard" (90.7 proof @ $150), then the 20 year "Barterhouse" (90.2 proof @ $75), followed by the 20 year "Rhetoric" (90 proof @ $85) and end with the newest, the 22 year old "Lost Prophet" (90.1 proof @ $125).
    As of 1-16-2015, my current bottle count stands at 1644 total bottles. I have 962 different ones in the bar & another 682 in back stock. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for the last two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for watching and sharing in my passion.
    Cheers!

My primary collection is scotch whisky and I noticed you have a very high end selection. With that said, it looks like most all of your spirits is high end. Mr. Hound: Enjoyed the tour. How much do you think you've spent on your collection over the past 20 years? What is your favorite spirit? Mine is Tequila. I also age my own tequila in small, medium char, 1 gal American oak barrels with really good results. I start with inexpensive 100% agave base, like Zappopan, etc and end up with delicious extra Anejo style about 6-12 months later, which usually renders closer to fine cognac. Quite smooth and minimal burn. Probably $100+ per bottle equivalent. I was amazed at the amount of evaporation during aging, about 20%+ "Angels share". You might consider adding Bacanora and Sotol,etc. to your Tequila shelf. They are a wild harvested agave spirit other then the Weber Blue agave. Regards, J

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 9 lety +3

      GereDJ2 - Thank you J, and great job on maturing your own tequilas. Right now my favorite spirit would probably be a Whiskey/Whisky. I'm really torn between single malts and bourbons right now since there are such great bottlings in each category. But my first love was Tequila, so it will always be near my heart. As for how much I've spent on my collection, while I do know the exact amount, I usually don't mention it (since my wife doesn't like hearing that big number). ;) I can say that if I were to have all that money back and had to start my collection all over, I'd save myself the time and trouble of all that searching and just buy my wife and I a couple of new Nissan GTR's (and throw a few bottles of cheap booze in the back). Cheers!

      I dno he might be able to drink this all if he really wanted to. Just making some assumptions, I'd guess he's about 45 and looks to be in decent health. The majority of those bottles are 750 ml. Just a rough estimate, say on average they are about 75% full. That's 563 ml in a bottle, which would comes out to about 2.5 ounces a day, which is a little over two and half fingers. He could drink those bottles of bourbon and whiskey neat one every week which would be 48 a year. The hard stuff he could drink easier with mixers. Give him another good 30 years to get it done so he'll be only 75, assuming he buys no more bottles and doesn't drink anybody else's booze for any reason and that's 1,440 bottles of booze.
      And probably liver disease. But _still_ do-able.

    amazing collection, and this is a 5 year old video .. and i am still gobsmacked! good to see some japanese whiskey in there, nikka, amazing stuff. also love your balvenie stocks, another amazing dram. i am into rum, so my my interests are piqued at 9:18. i dont see any el dorado (i would add the 25 if you have the cash .. or even the 50 .. , though the 21, 15 and 12 are all fantastic), or ron millonario xo, diplomatico ambassador. zacapa xo is ok, but for the price there are better choices, like the aforementioned. plantation make some excellent rums too. appletons i find to underwhelming, i have had them all, including the joy and the 50. again, for the price it just leaves me feeling there are better options out there. for example, i would take el dorado 12, 15 or 21 all day over appleton 21. all three el dorados easily outclass the appleton, even at the humble pricepoint of the el dorado 12, currently about $45 a bottle (insane value for such a high quality rum), versus $170 for appleton 21. stunning collection, i can only assume you have a climate controlled warehouse storage facility, complete with foreman and forklifts etc by now lol.

    Chris. Thank you for the quick response on the Regalia vodka. Your reviews are top notch and I really enjoy your youtube videos. I am a vodka drinker and wonder if you ever tried "Legend of Kremlin" vodka? It is one of my favorites along with Stoli Elit and Absolut Elyx. Am Canadian and going to Florida for the winter, where I will purchase a bottle of Beluga Noble Gold Line. Will also sample vodkas that are not available in Canada, such as Imperia. Congrats on your youtube videos, simply the best.

      Idk, maybe one day soon, but not a whole lot has changed. The shelves are a little fuller (including the top) and a few bottles have been switched out, but it’s not a dramatic difference. Cheers!

    Impressive collection to say the least! You mentioned in a reply below that open bottles will last about a year or so. While that's not an issue at my house, it seems that you have numerous open bottles. Seems maybe too many open bottles?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 9 lety +1

      Thank you Dwayne. I do have many open bottles but I use argon after every time I pour from them. This resealing technique has made my bottles last 5-10+ years without a loss of flavor or alcohol by volume. An important note is not to disturb the bottles once sealed and to keep an eye on their cork conditions. See my video "Glassware, Corks & Spirit Oxidation" for more information and a taste comparison of a bottle that's been opened 5 years versus a brand new bottle. Cheers!.

    You have a great and extensive collection/bar, and I see that many of the bottles have actually been opened and ‘enjoyed’; which is great. I can’t stand people that just buy liquor for the sake of collecting. That said, experimenting that many bottles (that is if they are merely for your own private pleasures vs. running a bar open to the general public) posses a couple of potential dilemmas: 1) controlling the oxidization and the loss of the intricate characteristics of the opened bottles, and 2) the long-term hepatic (liver) impact of experimenting and enjoying that many bottles of liquor. There are many methods available to combat the oxidizing/deteriorating effects of oxygen on air exposed liquor, which I’m certain you’re already aware of. Now, whether or not you actually have the time to take care of that many bottles is a different story. As for the potential liver problems, my recommendation would be for you to do an annual ultrasound of the liver and also have your liver enzymes checked periodically.

      It’s definitely something we should all consider so thank you for the info. I do use argon to preserve my open bottles, so even though I’ve acquired many bottles and have tasted/shared them, I don’t drink from them all the time. As a matter of fact, I still have the very first bottle in my collection that’s 3/4 full from 1994. That said, I agree that being safe and proactive is a good idea for anyone who drinks alcohol. I also advocate drinking in moderation/responsibly. Thank you and cheers!

    Great collection. Sorry if this is a dumb question but.. wont some of that go bad after time. Especially things like whiskey? I mean I doubt any of that will be drank regularly enough to be continually changed out for newer bottles. But... maybe im wrong

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 5 lety

      You're correct. If you don't take measures to prevent oxidation, you probably should finish them within a year or two. There are many variables though. If it's a high abv bottle or if it drinks hot (big spice), you could probably extend that a bit as it could use some calming. I use a tank of argon to gas roughly 95% of my open bottles to prevent oxidation/flavor loss. For smaller home bars, a wine preserver spray works well. Cheers!

    i think when you open a bottle one week is the max to spoil it that,s my standard

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 8 lety

      +sulaiman saleh - Wow one week is a strict standard. ;-) Myself, I use Argon gas to preserve all my open bottles, so I'm able to hold them for much longer. For smaller collections I recommend a $10 bottle of a Wine Preserver spray to help gas your open bottles and keep the oxidization to a minimum. Thank you and cheers!

    Have you had Lot 40 Canadian Whisky? Its a gem! You should try to find a bottle. Also, noticed you do not have any of the Macallan line... not a fan?

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 9 lety

      Jeremy Hevey - I have had Lot 40 (new and old) and I agree they are both great bottlings. I do have a few Macallans, but I don't consider myself a big Macallan collector. The bottles I have are mostly for drinking and include an older 25 year sherry, several vintages of 18 (going back to '83), the great Cask Strength bottlings (several abv's), and of course the 12 year. Cheers!

      Is the new 1824 series in the US yet? I haven't seen them around. Im trying to get my hands on some of the age statement bottles. They don't being them in Ontario anymore. Found a couple 12s and one 18, as well as a 15 fineoak. Do you notice the supply thinning out at all? I'm scared to open them.

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  Před 9 lety

      Jeremy Hevey - Thankfully the 1824 series is not in the US yet (as far as I've heard). ;) I have noticed that the distributor here in Texas has begun to dump their inventory of the age stated 12's onto the retailers (a few stores sitting on 12-20 cases in the store). I'm a tad worried that after awhile there won't be any more 12's distributed, but rather the 1824 series will replace them (but that's all speculation). As for the 18's, they seem to be readily available, but most have seemed unwilling to drop the $200 on them. Cheers!

    That is a beautiful collection, but all that light will kill your liquor fast. In complete darkness at an average temp of 70 degrees, they usually last up to 10 years, with light exposure, up to 2 year at the most.
