  • In this video, Jenny reviews the latest 2022 Kia Stonic. A small affordable subcompact SUV from Kia. The Stonic is meant to be one of these tiny SUVs that seem to be all the rage these days - basically, a jacked-up mini city car.
Those are very much bound by their price tag. Things get even more limiting when you take into account that the one I have here is the misleadingly titled Sport trim.
However, what most people who are not car journalists often fail to recognize is that most people actually need affordable, simple cars to do their daily errands while providing a reasonable amount of tech and comfort perks and modern looks.
There are two engine options in the Kia Stonic. The more powerful turbo version that we tried in the Stonic GT-Line last year it’s the one to choose for more oomph, but even that one is not really sporty. It’s a 1 L 3-cylinder turbo petrol with 74 kW and 172 Nm of torque. There are two redeeming features for a Stonic with this engine, the first one being a 7-speed dual clutch it is connected with and the second one being a wonderfully wide torque curve that runs from 1500 to 4000 revs that makes the best of the available push in everyday conditions.
Kia Stonic driveaway pricing starts at just under $25k for the S in manual. This sport in Auto will set you back just over $28k.

we're buying one these. i test drove the gt-line dct7 today. wow what an awesome little car to drive. you have to be in sport mode though. probably the best small car i've ever driven.

Hired one of these the other day. You notice it's not grunty in traffic, but at highway speeds overtaking is an adventure. It drops down the gears, revs its ring off and well that's it really.

We hired one of these in Australia-brand new & we drove from Brisbane to Cairns. We were a couple with our luggage in tow between destinations. Great car but I found it quite lacking in power when encountering hills. I ended up resorting to using the tip tronic & flicking between 3rd & 4th to keep it moving so I didn't hold up the traffic behind me as I found the auto quite sluggish to change to meet the revs & road conditions. The lane assist seemed to want to drive the car from one white line on one side of the road to the white line on the opposite side & back again. Otherwise it was fairly comfortable & accommodated our luggage. The economy was ok. I'm not a fan of auto's & I think they bring extra weight/complexity/reduced performance & a reduction in economy so just why manufacturers insist on forcing them on us I don't know. It used to be in Australia you could select a manual option because that's what the majority wanted but that didn't seem to be the case when I went to book. I personally own a MG3 manual & missed the performance of the MG & handling, although the tyres on the MG generate quite a lot of road noise and the steering on the MG feels heavier.Be interesting to see how the Stonic compares to the Citroen C3 Shine.

Hi Jenny, I got a 2021 stonic in Singapore. It is an SX model, quite surprise the new model you are using doesn’t have a few things , automatic head lights , lane change notifications , air-con with climate control , ability to toggle for sport mode, sun-roof as well . Haha i guess the only part that really change is the logo.

Jenny, may I show a minute or two of your 2022 Kia Stonic and Hyundai Venue as these were two vehicles I was looking at as my next car. in my first ever CZcams video I would also like to add links to those two reviews rather than repeating what you guys have already said.

You would think they would take the 1.6 L from the Hyundai venue and put it in the to lower grade models of the stonic just to give it a little bit more pep

This car is very good for what it costs. It's just that reviewers are used to high end premium cars that they tend to compare with every other car they review.

I think the breathless engine influenced how she perceived the rest of the car. I saw one parked at a shopping centre recently and it was enough for me to double back for a closer look. It doesn’t have the coupe style sloped back of most other SUVs. For me, that makes it unique, not dated. And the interior seems be in keeping with other cars in the segment. The Volkswagen-esque utilitarianism styling suits me just fine.

Still cheaper than Toyota. Kia New Zealand charges NZ$25k. But not hybrid. Toyota Corolla Cross GXL Toyota New Zealand charges NZ$44k. Mistubishi New Zealand charges NZ$27k for the ASX which is a petrol hog.
