- GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is a real concern for us photographers. In this video I will discuss how I deal with my own gas, and also talk about a 10 year old Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 lens, which often serves as a cure for my gas.

Of my 15 Fujifilm lenses, the 35mm f/1.4 is one of my faves!
I always go back to it. It really is magical. Mine is a little beaten up looking by now, and I think that also adds to the charm. The 35 on the XPro1 is probably my all time favorite combination for black and white images.
My Fuji Gas has been under control (although, I have got a few things for studio, granted mostly cheapish stuff recently) however... I did just pick up the Sigma 56 F/1.4
The Fuji XF 35 F/1.4 has been with me from X-Pro 1, X-T10, X-Pro 2, X-T3 and is easily my most used lens.
I always had an eye open for the XF 56 F/1.2 but never pulled the trigger, and I love the portraits from the 35 F/1.4, and when the sigma Trio was released, I decided to grab the 56 since it was a great deal at just over 1/3 of the price of the new Fuji 56 F/1.2 WR.
Got to admit I am loving the images from the sigma, and I actually left the 35 F/1.4 home for the first time in years (granted I knew I was not going to need it)
A colleague got the XT-5 on day 1, but he shoots a lot of wildlife too and wanted the bird tracking, and he is loving it. I am holding onto my XT-3 as most of my work does not need cropping and the 26MP is fine for now
Cool. I reviewed the Sigma 18-50 and I was super impressed. I have the 16-55 Fuji and it's half the size with excellent image quality. Having said that I gotta rewatch my own video because I'm having seasonal GAS right now LOL!
Great video The modifiers and grip gear are the things that give me gas!
Thanks for watching Johnny - yep it's the modifiers more than the cameras for me too!
I think your process is correct. Just go back to the playroom and find another toy to play with, when you feel you have to buy something. I always declare I'm buying something first, but don't pull the trigger right away and just live with the decision before acting. Often, something else comes along to confuse things and I don't buy anything at all, which is good.
Thanks, Fred! So true, if you wait a few days usually the urge to buy something goes a way haha
I just buy all the things... it works for me
Ha! That's really the best way
I understand the issue but.. I have the x-t5 and the h-x2 I traded All my Canon gear and boy I had alot! I keept hearing of the x-pro1 including your vid. I HAD TO GET IT and I got it with the 35mm 1.4 and I an sooo glad I did! Just saying sometimes you need to go with your gut as I would of missed out on this awsome camera I can NOT put down... GREAT VID as usual! Thank you!!!
Thank you!
When the GAS syndrome hits the door, I buy or do something wonderful for my lady, then she knows Iâm on that phase and therapy begins! đ€Łđđ€Łđđ€Łđ
Was looking at vflats, 400$, then I found black curtains I had, doubled up hanging on a stand, one set each side of subject, done!
Awesome. Now you can put that 400 towards a lens đ
I never have owned my own prime. I got a TTartisan 35 1.4 and itâs so nice. Iâve come to realize I LOVE bokeh. I thought I didnât need it and bought a 24-105 when I had a canon 80d for the range and it being a L lens. I love the images I got but they were missing something. Iâm trying to avoid GAS with my Fuji, but I love the manual lens TTArtisan created. But for work Iâm not confident in manual, but Iâd love the same vintage look it gives. So Iâm stuck between the 35 1.4, 35 2, 33 1.4, or 30 1.4 from Sigma, I also donât want to buy something that might be outdated. I have the kit lens and Iâve been trying to only shoot with that but I now know Bokeh is whatâs missing haha. So this decision has been hard.
I have the original Fuji 35 1.4 and it's a wonderful lens that has a bit of that vintage look to it.
I believe that the âGASâ is more of an issue for amateurs like me, professionals tend to look at gear more as a tool and always try to work with it (or make it work). I have the XF35 f/2 (great lens), but that wasn't good enough for me, so I got the XF33 f/1.4, do I need to tell you that my photography didnât improve? of course not, we all know that, but I have a new toy. Now letâs talk about the argentininan empanadas that I had for lunch, that is real gas, Iâm about to OD on Alka Seltzer.
HAHAHA empanadas lol. Pros get GAS too, maybe not as bad as amateurs but we all get it sometimes lol
My friend, I respectfully disagree! Since the 70âs Iâve seen so many proâs (Warner Brother Proâs) including my grandfather go through horrible GAS episodes, so bad that I even got infected with that nasty and contagious disease! Itâs worst than sugar, whiskey or love itself. Itâs sensuality kills you beautifully slowly to the pace of art just like a good Tango kills sorrow! Just to think about it makes me go and buy some gear! â€

Iâve gotten some incredible G master series 1 lenses from commercial photographers upgrading their lenses. As a portrait photographer I donât really have a need to upgrade to the v2 lenses. Yes very guilty of GAS. Especially since Iâm only on year 2 of professional photographer.
When you turn your hobby into a business, it becomes much more important to avoid spending money on gear unless you really need it.
Agreed, shooting photos helps
Today I have my XPro1 with me & the same 35mm⊠Iâm always happy with this combo
Pete, I know this is an older video but how has this lens performed on the 40mp bodies?
I love it. I use it all the time for my portrait work.
@@PeteCocoPhoto good deal !!!!
I need to buy the Fuji 35mm 1.4 so that I can let go of this gas đ€
X-Lax also helps!
just bought the 35 1.4 from ebay for 370⏠shipped.... hope it won't disappoint. I had the 35 f2 and the look it gave to images didn't satisfy me, so hopefully this one beat the f2 in that regard as it cost more, has no WR and older AF.
I love this lens. The AF is slow and loud, so be prepared for that. But the image quality is excellent and it has a wonderful look to it. That's my go to family/concert/street photography lens.
@@PeteCocoPhoto the good thing is 370⏠is basically the best price i could find here in italy and it's from a store saying I have 14 days for the return...gonna try it extensively and hopefully is a keeper :)
@@hellni79 Do you still have the lens?
@@MOTOJendays been quite a trip, sold the 35 in need of cash, had the opportunity to get the f2 again, got it, it was nice for the form factor, but still lacking something in image "feel".... ha dht eopportunity to sell it again and found a 35 1.4 for 300âŹ... crazy price! it was just lacking the lens cap. so now I m happy again with the 35mm 1.4 . really love the feel it gives, especially the full aperture 1.4, that gets close to full frame really
@@hellni79 I agree the 35 1.4 is amazing. One lens I know that will always stay in my bag, and a lot of the times. On my camera. I don't think I could ever see me selling mine.
i have GAS, but i like it. Why not? I love Gear
Good point!
I am watching this video while having GAS for this lens. So the video doesn't solve the purpose for me. :D
Get it! đ
Too late for me. For 2 reasons, 1) Two or more of every thing, always be prepared. 2) I by every thing used and I can't resist a great deal on a piece of gear. That is how I wound up with 25 DSLRs, over 100 lenses and more studio modifiers than Karl Taylor has. He who dies with the most gear wins.
Yep, I completely understand. I haven't taken my own advice in this video! Haha
A DISCOVERY: I found a CURE to the annoying 'zoom-zoom' noise of XF 35mm f/1.4. As I use this lens on my X-E4 only for close-up & portrait, I know the focal distance will always hit between 0.3m(bit like macro) and 1.8m, with aperture never exceeding f/2.8. By setting an AF limiter(0.3m to 1.8m), the lens stops making continuous squeezing sound when half-pressing the shutter button, replaced with a short and non-obtrusive 'zi-zi' sound. No more wild hunting for focus as I force it to focus on a subject within allowed focal range. When I point the camera at any object outside this AF range, a red 'out-of-focus' frame displays with no movement of lens at all!!!
great workaround! I discovered the AF limiter by accident because it just wouldn't focus and I had no idea why LOL. At first I thought it was broken! haha
@@PeteCocoPhoto I enjoy 23mm and 35mm focal lengths as they both feel pleasantly natural to eyes. One for environmental description and the other for portrait/close-up. Lens manufacturer never (dare) muck up with 23 and 35. LOL. Never need to go wider or narrower. LOVE your channel on portrait tips & tricks. Learnt a lot, bro!!!
Is that your real voice?
Or course not. I overdub the audio in all my videos. All your favorite CZcamsrs do this.
