It's not exactly on topic, but we lost John Prine to Covid-19 last night. Bob Dylan expressed the highest admiration for his songwriting skills which is not too shabby. I'm sad tonight and can't face playing any of JPs music for now, so this video was a welcome distraction - thanks as always John (H).
@@oinkooink Wow, On a topic about Bob Dylan's best albums, you have used John Prine's death to peddle your poisonous views. You despicable, gullible crank
Covid 19 is the biggest globalist scam they’ve ever concocted. They took a mildly contagious flu and turned it into the greatest suppression of freedom of association and human interaction ever conceived. John Prine died of cancer not the Chinese virus and he knew it. All those cigarettes and joints took their toll.
This was so refreshing! Thank you! Lovedchearing your insights, so free from judgment. I always thought his spiritual insights were humble and moving. You turned me on to some i overlooked.
1. Highway 61 Revisited 2. Blonde on Blonde 3. Bringing it all Back Home 4. Blood on the Tracks 5. John Wesley Harding 6. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 7. "Love & Theft" 8. Time Out of Mind 9. Desire 10. Oh Mercy
Impossible task! Even narrowing it down to a top twenty would be very difficult for me - there are a lot of un-acclaimed “lesser” albums that I’m personally very attached to, such as “Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid”, “Together Through Life”, “Shot Of Love”, “World Gone Wrong”, even - dare I mention? - “Down In The Groove”! the list goes on... But I enjoyed hearing your picks, all very valid.. glad that you included “Street Legal”, and even though it’s not a favorite of mine, “Saved” was a very interesting choice... My personal favorite will always be “John Wesley Harding”, and “Blood On The Tracks” as a close second.. after that - it depends on what day of the week it is...Nice video John.
So in agreement on mid 70s Dylan! Whatever anyone's list is, this was a great and heartfelt review John and you've picked out great albums for great reasons.
I am happy that at least you included "John Wesley Harding" in your top ten. It is my personal favorite if not objectively his very best. I can tell you became a Dylan fan fairly late in the game, since you left out everything earlier than "Blonde on Blonde." In my opinion, none of his post-1960s works, with the possible exception of "Blood on the Tracks ," comes close to those from his classic period-"Bringing It All Back Home," "Highway 61," and "Blonde on Blonde."
I'm a late Dylan fan but still agree with you, be it that I include both mid seventies albums in my top 10, next to the whole lot from 2nd (Freewheelin') up to and including the 8th (John Wesley Harding). To me, Infidels was his last good album. After that, it's the poor eighties, and the numerous "returns to form" never happened to me. The album I disagree on with most list makers is Love & Theft. If we disregard all cover albums (and there are a lot!) only Knocked out Loaded has poorer songs than Love & Theft, to me. But there's enough hate already in the world, so let's agree to be mesmerized by the many masterpieces he put out. Besides those, I also enjoy the Bootleg Series vol 1-3 and the fabulous Rolling Thunder concert (vol 5.)
Yeah. If I had to pick one favorite, it would probably be Time Out of Mind. Some of those lyrics really hit home. Plus there's something about the whole feel of that record.
@@dbarker7794 Agreed on the "feel" of this record....and Not Dark Yet is one of his best songs ever. "I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from." (chills)

My personal favorite is The Other Side of Bob Dylan. Then the trilogy of Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61, and Blonde On Blonde is phenomenal too. Then Desire is a personal favorite too.
Another side was my very first album (age 16). I chose it because of a couple of songs the Byrds covered without hearing his voice so it was a bit of a shock at first but in the past 50 years I have grown to enjoy the album.
I love "Another Side of Bob Dylan" too, for sure in my top 10. Perhaps "Ballad In Plain D" being my favorite song ever. But it's hard to come up with a top 10 Dylan album. Each fan will have very different views with the amount and quality of material available...
@@marciosr8504 Yes, I completely agree with Ballad In Plain D being an outstanding song. IMHO Dylan's vocals are at his best in Another Side in addition to lyrics. Ramona and I Don't Believe In You (acts like we never met) are great too.
John, you are true of heart & love your music. Street Legal is a masterpiece. Glad I found your channel, hope you see this. Cheers, mate, from Chicago.
Thanks for doing this - I highly regard all the albums you've mentioned here but, well.......there is a reason that the Beatles were listening to Dylan every day during the mid-'60s, and a reason they gave this guy a Nobel Prize...and it's reflected in all the albums he released prior to Blonde on Blonde (the earliest one on your list). I would respectfully submit that The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is the scientific equivalent of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. It exploded into the world of music the same way, altering it forever. And the four albums he made immediately after that were even more amazing and made us all drop what we were thinking and reconsider music entirely. Sorry but gotta give you a B+ only on this one (said the dinosaur to the wooly mammoth). But I love that you put your opinions out there and give us a forum to add our own silly views. It's a fun thing to keep our minds active even as our bodies are wasting away in this absurd time. Keep up the good work and stay safe everyone.
DeRickSter: Spot on in my opinion. Freewheelin' through Highest 61 are all masterpieces. And to think that Dylan knocked those five albums out in only 3 years is nothing short of amazing.
I liked his work with Daniel Lanois. "Time Out Of Mind" is probably my all time favorite album of all time. And "Oh Mercy" is in my Top 5 favorite Bob Dylan albums. "Tell Tale Signs" is one of my all time favorite albums. The female vocal on the "Desire" album is Emmylou Harris. It never seemed to me like she got alot of recognition for that. I don't remember seeing her name in the credits but were picture was on the back of the album. I loved her vocal on "Golden Loom" the Bootleg Volumes 1,2,3. Emmylou's "Wrecking Ball" album was produced by Daniel Lanois and she recorded a beautiful rendition of "Every Grain of Sand" on that album. There's a connection, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois and Mark Knopfler.
You are so right about Time Out Of Mind, an absolutely stunning return to form(Cold Irons Bound, anyone?) that was actually recorded with 2(!) separate sets of lyrics for 1 album..... also Oh Mercy is aptly named, another great listen indeed!.... Ghostrider Rick
Hi John, Oh Mercy would have been in my top 5 , and Man in the Long Black Coat from this is the Dylan song I never tire of hearing. Also would not have Saved or Nashville Skyline anywhere near the top 10 . However Blood on the Tracks at no 1 is spot on!
Superb list, John. We share the same favourite Dylan period, i.e. mid-to-late 70s. I knew that already from your reviews of the individual albums, but great to see your full list.
I discovered your channel about two weeks ago and have been enjoying your reviews very much. We are close in age and have similar musical tastes. Which leads to my question: What do you have to say about The Kinks? Just curious. Please continue your fine efforts.
Interesting list, since most such lists are top heavy with the 1960's albums. It would good see you show Street Legal and Slow Train some much deserved love. Thanks for another great video, and stay safe.
1/Desire 2/Blonde on Blonde 3/Blood on the tracks 4/Love and Theft 5/Modern Times 6/Infidels 7/ Oh Mercy 8/Slow Train Coming 9/Street Legal 10/Time Out of Mind This is my list as of today 😉
Fair play to you John for having 'Saved in your top 5 as although i didn't get it (at all) when first released as the years have went by your personal thoughts on it mirrors exactly my own..... Great top 10.
Great review. I agree with eight out of ten. I would have added "Time Out of Mid" and "Highway 61 revisited",at the expense of "Saved" and "Modern Times" but it's all a matter of taste. I played all his later day albums yesterday and it's amazing how you love different albums at different times. There is always something special in every album.

@@spencerdobkin9479 Each track of Highway 61 is super sharp. Blonde On Blonde is a more laid back rollicking album. Everything Bob Dylan has done from singing, reading poetry ,his artwork and especially his books are pure genius.
I agree with your most controversial choices. I love Modern Times, Saved, Slow train coming and Street legal is probably in my top 3. Thanks for the video!
Terrific list John! As always I appreciate hearing your insights on these albums. I'm glad to see Slow Train Coming getting some love! It's one of his all time best. At that point in time, Bob hadn't sounded so passionate since Blood on the Tracks, and it is one of his best albums lyrically. It's also quite a rocking, grooving album which I suppose is part of the reason I like it so much. Any album that has Mark Knopfler on it, let alone Knopfler AND Pick Withers is a must listen. Difficult to rank these albums, but I think at the moment my top 3 would consist of Slow Train Coming, Highway 61 Revisited and The Times They Are A Changin'.
Hey John, great video as usual! Can`t believe though you missed out on my fav album " Oh Mercy".. Also love "Street legal", "Blood on the tracks" and "Nashville skyline"
Great list, differs from mine (of course): 1. Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 2. Blonde on Blonde 3. The times they are a changin 4. Tempest 5. Desire 6. Nashville Skyline 7. Highway 61 Revisited 8.John Wesley Harding 9. Planet Waves 10. Modern Times
Interesting list. Mine is very much dominated by 60s Dylan: 1. Highway 61 Revisited 2. Blonde on Blonde 3. Bringing it All Back Home 4. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 5. The Times they are a Changin' 6. John Wesley Harding 7. The Basement Tapes 8. Blood on the Tracks 9. Another Side of Bob Dylan 10. Desire
I like this list - particularly because it's not top heavy with 60's albums. I've never agreed with the critics that he was great in the 60's and everything later, except for BOTT, was forgettable. My list would be similar, although I would include Oh Mercy - possibly my #1 album - Time Out of Mind, Shot of Love. Nice to see some love for Street Legal!
Mis favoritos 01 New Morning 02 Blonde On Blonde 03 Highway 61 Revisted 04 Briging It All Back Home 05 Desire 06 Blood On The Traks 07 Planet Waves 08 John Wesley Harding 09 Time Out Of Mind 10 Another Sides Of Bob Dylan
Great albums indeed. I would add the underrated “ Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid”, the Basement Tapes, Oh Mercy, etc,,, and the list can go on and on and on. Not to mention that the Great George Harrison said: You can still listen to Bob Dylan for the next 500 years! RIP George.
Ominous - no hello it’s John Heston intro. It’s like after the first set if Bob Weir didn’t say “we’ll be back in just a little bit” you wondered if something was up.
Any word on whether or not Dylan will release another "Chronicles" book? The first was great for what it was but there's at least another 10 volumes to go in covering his life.
1. Modern Times 2. Nashville Skyline 3. Basement Tapes 4. Blonde on Blonde 5. Love and Theft 6. Desire 7. Hghway 61 Revisited 8. Time out of Mind 9. Freewheeling Bob Dylan 10. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Top 2 for me would be Blood On The Tracks and John Wesley Harding, in no particular order. Blood On The Tracks in its original album form, that is, before half the album was re recorded, as it is found on The New York Sessions. The released album while still very good really pales by comparison. The slower "Idiot Wind" and also "You're A Big Girl Now" are much better in their original form, especially. John Wesley Harding is flawless from start to finish, and for me, Bob's most perfect album (in released form). It is a case of less is more with this album, and it packs quite a punch, in what appears originally to be from mild surroundings. Love the bibical themes and parables. Although the first side of Bring It All Back Home isn't as consistent as the second, side 2 is so utterly stunning i would have to put the album at no 3. Side 2 is just so completely flawless and it shows Dylan at his most surreal in terms of the imagery of his lyric writing. It is difficult to think of another single side of an album that comes close to eclipsing it. Highway 61 Revisited is perhaps next, followed by maybe Blonde On Blonde, or Desire. Blonde On Blonde is definitely up there. When it is good it is exceptionally so, and especially in terms of its surreal imagery lyric writing, although i find it slightly underwhelming at times with a few of those blues tunes, as good as they are, but maybe not prime Dylan. Desire is a great sounding Dylan album musically and pretty much from start to finish. The violin and Emmylou Harris backing vocals give it a unique texture, as does its themes of injustice and the mystical/spiritual. Maybe it isn't quite up there in showcasing Dylan's lyrical dexterity, but as an overall enjoyable experience it takes some beating. Not sure what order i'd put the remaining Dylan albums. I have a soft spot for Another Side, and Love And Theft is extremely enjoyable. His christian albums certainly have their moments, but for me, all three lack consistency and can be at times a little too heavy handed with the message .
5) John Wesley Harding (1968) 4) Blood On The Tracks (1974) 3) Bringing It All Back Home (1965) 2) Highway 61 Revisited (1965) 1) Blonde On Blonde (1966)
For anyone using this as a guide if you see ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ and think Like A Rolling Stone -Tombstone Blues -Queen Jane -Just like Tom Thumb - Desolation Row It takes a train etc... - all must be a bit off - u might well be in for a surprise 😃
So right about Dylan's 60's triology (BIABH, Highway 61 & Blonde on Blonde) - he was moving so fast and no doubt spurred on by the UK music scene of the time, just staggering and never to be repeated by anyone. Surprised that Time Out of Mind is not in there somewhere!
John I just went through listening to all his albums, with a view to making a Spotify playlist. The only ones I skimmed were all the basement tapes ones, and I will get around to them. I actually really like his recent covers albums of standards, such a great sound on them. Anyway at the moment "Is your love in vain" is my favourite song of his, with "simple twist of fate" not far away. On the most recent album, I also like "murder most fowl".
I have a soft spot for the Christmas album, Christmas in the heart. It's become tradition in our house that this is played whilst making the Christmas pudding.
My favourite 10 Bob Dylan albums 1. Blood on the Tracks 2. Blonde on Blonde 3.Highway 61 Revisited 4.Time Out of Mind 5. Slow Train Coming 6. Modern Times 7. Desire 8. Street Legal 9.Freewheelin' Bob Dylan 10.Bringing It All back Home
I think , like most Dylan aficionados , the trilogy of albums from 1965-66 , Bring It All Back Home , Highway 61 Revisited , and Blonde On Blonde , are the best of a great body of work from the genius lyricist .
My top 10 keeps changing, i listen a lot to Bob Dylan albums, at the moment it would be as follows: 1) highway 61 revisited 2) blonde on blonde 3) desire 4) blood on the tracks 4) nashville skyline 5) bringing it all back home 6) times they are a changin 7) Freewheelin 8) street legal 9) john wesley harding 10) Oh Mercy
Interesting ranking John and nice to see some less obvious picks make the ten. The only one that I feel has to be in there is Highway 61 Revisited but you made a good case for your selections. Good stuff and looking forward to the next one.
My favourite Dylan are the live albums Before The Flood and Hard Rain. Studio albums Blood On The Tracks, Bootleg Series 1 2 3 , Blonde On Blonde and Infidels.
You are so on the money about Street Legal, John.......It remains my fav Dylan album! .. I don't know why the fans/critics(who cares about them, anyway)are always so down on it(see-Supertramps "Famous Last Words" for another album that is unfairly slagged) ... Hi John, Completely unrelated to dylan but I've always wondered your opinion on McCartneys Chaos and Creation. I personally think it's his best solo effort in his later years, certainly my favourite of his from the 90s 00s and 10s. Another great video by the way!
Well - His Greatest Hits would go one, two three, and Hard Rain and The Bob Dylan and the Band Live albums would follow, with honorable mention to Real Live, Royal Albert Hall and Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead . Plus- The Basement Tapes (a few Band songs only)...that being said, and as it’s Studio only apparently , my top-ten (today) would be: 01. Highway 61 Revisited 02. Bringing it All Back Home 03. Blonde on Blonde 04. Blood on the Tracks 05. Desire 06. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan 07. The Times They Are A Changin’ 08. Love and Theft 09. Time Out of Mind 10. Slow Train Coming
1. Blood on the Tracks, 2. Highway 61 Revisited, 3. Blonde on Blonde, 4. Desire, 5. Bringing It All Back Home, 6. Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, 7.Another Side of Bob Dylan, 8. The Times They Are A-Changing, 9. Time Out of Mind.10. Street Legal
Well done but missing out H61R and BIABH and Freewheelin' is like missing out Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth from Shakespeare's top ten in my opinion. Also how can you say Nashville Skyline is above Blonde on Blonde. We are all different, good luck and well made video.

It's pretty incredible. Blonde on Blonde is my #1
@@spencerdobkin9479 Each track of Highway 61 is super sharp.
Knopfler's solo on "I Believe In You" is just a knockout.
Hey John, great video as usual! Can`t believe though you missed out on my
fav album " Oh Mercy".. Also love "Street legal", "Blood on the tracks" and "Nashville skyline"
Great list, differs from mine (of course):
1. Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
2. Blonde on Blonde
3. The times they are a changin
4. Tempest
5. Desire
6. Nashville Skyline
7. Highway 61 Revisited
8.John Wesley Harding
9. Planet Waves
10. Modern Times
I love the first one. Learned every track. Then Freewheelin' came along.......
1-Desire
2-Highway 61 Revisited
3- Nashville Skyline
4- saved
5- Time out of mind
6-Oh Mercy
7- Tempest
8-Infidels
9-Street legal
10-Planet Waves
Interesting list. Mine is very much dominated by 60s Dylan:
1. Highway 61 Revisited
2. Blonde on Blonde
3. Bringing it All Back Home
4. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
5. The Times they are a Changin'
6. John Wesley Harding
7. The Basement Tapes
8. Blood on the Tracks
9. Another Side of Bob Dylan
Mis favoritos
01 New Morning
02 Blonde On Blonde
03 Highway 61 Revisted
04 Briging It All Back Home
05 Desire
06 Blood On The Traks
07 Planet Waves
08 John Wesley Harding
09 Time Out Of Mind
10 Another Sides Of Bob Dylan
1. Another side of Bob Dylan
2. The Freewheelin Bob Dylan
3. Bringing it all back home
I've personally got blonde on blonde as my number 1 but great list
Neil Young Top 10 next?
Hi John great reviews .you have inspired me to buy some classic albums I really should have owned.
Any word on whether or not Dylan will release another "Chronicles" book? The first was great for what it was but there's at least another 10 volumes to go in covering his life.
Yes, I loved Chronicles One - Unlike any other auto-bio I've read.. stupendous
1. Modern Times
2. Nashville Skyline
3. Basement Tapes
4. Blonde on Blonde
5. Love and Theft
6. Desire
7. Hghway 61 Revisited
8. Time out of Mind
9. Freewheeling Bob Dylan
Great list. I agree with it almost entirely. Planet Waves I love too - a great album with great, somewhat raw backup work by The Band.
Great that you give proper respect to Street Legal - Some of Bob's best melodies on that one!
Good list Bob my #1 would be Desire. Do you have the Trouble no more box set and what are your thoughts on it.
5) John Wesley Harding (1968)
4) Blood On The Tracks (1974)
3) Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
2) Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
1) Blonde On Blonde (1966)
Interesting. Only 2 (maybe 3) of these would currently be on my Top 10. But some here I haven't heard in full.
YOU Are on the money..blood on the tracks..is just magic..
A nice personal list John, thanks. I may attempt this at some point, and we would have a few crossovers.
My favourite 10 Bob Dylan albums
1. Blood on the Tracks
2. Blonde on Blonde
3.Highway 61 Revisited
4.Time Out of Mind
5. Slow Train Coming
6. Modern Times
7. Desire
8. Street Legal
9.Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
10.Bringing It All back Home
Thanks for this John and some would be in my top ten too .....but no place for Highway 61 .....really!!
I think , like most Dylan aficionados , the trilogy of albums from 1965-66 , Bring It All Back Home , Highway 61 Revisited , and Blonde On Blonde , are the best of a great body of work from the genius lyricist .
My top 10 keeps changing, i listen a lot to Bob Dylan albums, at the moment it would be as follows:
1) highway 61 revisited
2) blonde on blonde
3) desire
4) blood on the tracks
4) nashville skyline
5) bringing it all back home
6) times they are a changin
7) Freewheelin
8) street legal
9) john wesley harding
10) Oh Mercy
I like Desire, Blood On The Tracks, Highway 61, and Slow Train.
Thanks John.
You know, I rather like Empire Burlesque as well, Dylan kinda moving with the times... What are your thoughts on it?....Your taste in music is impeccable, keep up the great work(ie More Top Tens, please!).... Ghostrider Rick
11. Street Legal/Oh Mercy 10. John Wesley Harding 9. Desire 8. Another Side of Bob Dylan 7. Modern Times 6. Highway 61 Revisted 5. Infidels 4. Blood on the Tracks 3. Time out of Mind 2. Bringing it all Back Home 1. Blonde on Blonde
Dylan's last album has always been the best.
Spot on with Blood On The Tracks at #1, it's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish.
-"Saving Grace' is a classique!
-Check out the new remasters of 'Street-Legal,' it's like hearing it anew
-John calls 'I Believe in You' "I Don't Believe You" haha, quoting Bob's rejoinder to an infamous heckler
1. Time out of mind. 2. Blood on the tracks. 3. Love and Theft. 4. Daylight.
Hi John,
Completely unrelated to dylan but I've always wondered your opinion on McCartneys Chaos and Creation. I personally think it's his best solo effort in his later years, certainly my favourite of his from the 90s 00s and 10s. Another great video by the way!
10. John Wesley Harding
9. Self Portrait
8. Nashville Skyline
7. New Morning
6. Freewheeling
5. Street Legal
4. Desire
3. Highway 61 Revisited
2. Blonde On Blonde
1. Blood On The Tracks
Brilliant. Thanks a lot. A great list
Well - His Greatest Hits would go one, two three, and Hard Rain and The Bob Dylan and the Band Live albums would follow, with honorable mention to Real Live, Royal Albert Hall and Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead . Plus- The Basement Tapes (a few Band songs only)...that being said, and as it’s Studio only apparently , my top-ten (today) would be:
01. Highway 61 Revisited
02. Bringing it All Back Home
03. Blonde on Blonde
04. Blood on the Tracks
05. Desire
06. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan
07. The Times They Are A Changin’
08. Love and Theft
09. Time Out of Mind
10. Slow Train Coming
Recently discovered Desire. Scarlett and Emmylou really do add to the chemistry.
Joey-my alltime favourite Dylan song
For me 1. Blood on the Tracks 2. Desire 3. 61 4. The Basement Tapes (does that count?)
thanks john!
Hey john enjoy your videos and stories. Do you like the who? Pete and roger?
Freewheelin. Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61, Blonde On Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, Desire. Together through life.
Oh John.... Blonde on Blonde.. !!
No spoilers but ..another great way 12 mins or so. Love your reviews so considered and heartfelt. Keep them coming.
My first Dylan purchase was Desire and it might still be my favourite.
My top 5
1 New Morning
2 John Wesley Harding
3 Self Portrait
4 Shot of Love
5 Real Life
Honourable mentions
6 Planet Saves
7 At Budokon
Slow Train Coming is a great listen.
Nashville skyline is my number one to me
We are a similar age, I love 70s Dylan and your Top 5 would be very similar to mine
Well done but missing out H61R and BIABH and Freewheelin' is like missing out Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth from Shakespeare's top ten in my opinion. Also how can you say Nashville Skyline is above Blonde on Blonde. We are all different, good luck and well made video.
I'm very attached to Blood on the Tracks, Desire and Street Legal too but I couldn't ignore Highway 61 Revisited as my #1.
