How To Make a No-Sew Baby Wrap Carrier From T-Shirts

  • UPDATE: I have received a lot of negative comments on how this carrier can be unsafe. To avoid wearing your baby in an unsafe manner, please watch my follow-up video to see how I safely wear my baby using this type of t-shirt carrier. Link is here: • How to Safely Wear You...
    Here I'll show you how to make a no-sew, wrap style baby carrier using only 3 t-shirts, a piece of yarn, and a pair of scissors. I used 3 old t-shirts I had on hand for this demonstration, but if you want one that is longer lasting and will fit better, then you should use high-quality 100% cotton tees. Always use thick t-shirts with no side seams or holes, and test your carrier with weights before putting your baby in there to make sure you know how to safely use it.
    *ERROR: In the video I say to use tshirts TWO sizes up, but that is wrong. Because t-shirt material is so stretchy, use t-shirts only ONE size up to get the right fit.*
    Enjoy, and please feel free to pass along the info to anyone who can use it!

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING!!! For those who have so many opinions about the safety and who scream JUST BUY ONE: First of all before these wraps got "Branded" they were made by moms like her! Not everyone can afford to pay for an expensive brand-name, so before we had money we made them! 😄

    Thank you! Thank you! I needed a carrier for a one time situation on vacation at a cavern that didn't allow strollers. I didn't want my 18 month old being squirmy in just my arms in this type of situation. The wrap worked great! I used 2 shirts, a shoe lace, and then tied a pair of old yoga pants around for extra support. For all you negative people saying spend the money and buy one, get over yourselves! Not everyone wants/needs a carrier for long term use. This was great in a pinch! I made it in my motel room too! Both baby and I were happy!

    I really don't comment on things often but I just wanted to say this is a great idea, but the baby's legs are not positioned ergonomically in this wrap. That can lead to problems with circulation and hip development. It should be okay if it's not used for extended periods of time though! Love the creativity! :) oh and that tip is for newcomers since I realize this is an old video :)

    Thanks, everyone, for the great comments! I really just wanted to have a babywearing option for mommas and daddies who can't necessarily afford to buy an expensive carrier. Because of that, I won't be patenting it. I already own the copyright by posting it here where everyone can view it. And yes, it is very similar to the Baby K'tan, that's what I modeled it after! Feel free to share with whomever you want, that's what this video is for. Happy babywearing!

    My 8 and 4 year old daughters want to "wear" their babies like I wear their baby brother and sister - this is such a great way I can make them their own easy baby doll wearers!
    And What a great idea to have stashed in the car for those times you don't plan ahead for an outing and need a sling! Love it!

  • @Triad637
    @Triad637 Před 12 lety +1

    Very great idea! Two options: 1.) Yarn substitute two or more of the same or color contrasting t-shirt short-sleeves: cut off and double-twisted for strength, figure 8 style, then slid onto where large loops intersect. 2.) Tucking an oversized round or oval terrycloth hotpad between the two large loop layers pads baby's bottom and helps both layers stay put. If the hotpad is a glove-style rectangle ovenmitt, it also can stow a spare-diaper.

    I will be trying this, thank-you. I am aware of the issues of carriers that cause "dangling babies" but I don't see that issue here. Baby is supported on their bum, and, although you didn't necessarily do it in the video, I can see how you can easily bring the baby's legs up around your tummy to further support baby. I have a moby, which I like a lot, but I get fed up with how long the one piece of fabric is. This one supports very similarly and it's one I'm comfortable with using. Thnx!

  • @srockwell12
    @srockwell12 Před 12 lety

    @jfta Actually, Hayley is correct. The t-shirts used for this K'tan-like carrier were not wide enough so there was not enough fabric to spread from knee to knee. The position of the baby in this video was very much like what you would have in a Bjorn and not at all like what you would see in a wrap or K'tan - which would put baby's knees higher than his/her bottom.

    jersey t-shirt material is the same thing t-shirts are made from. And since you aren't going to be using the sleeves, you could easily get Men's muscle shirts as long as they are 100% cotton. You would pay WAY more money for jersey fabric by the yard at the fabric store than you would pay for 3 t-shirts.

    neat idea, but there are several things you may want to be aware before using this. The passes that go under the baby's bottom should Always Always Always go from knee to knee and the baby should Never face out. There are several reasons for this- but the biggest is that it's Terrible for hip development to have the the baby dangle that way (Baby Bjorn is also awful for this reason). The butt should be lower than the knees. And stretchy wraps are really hard on the parent's back after 13lbs

    If you read not only my comments on the video and my comments to other responders you will see that yes, I did make the carrier too big. I re-made one using smaller t-shirts, as I mention in my comments in the video. And the correctly-sized one fits her well in the proper position. The way I made the newer carrier is identical to the way I made the older one so I didn't re-make the video. Thanks for watching it, though!

    It does look like the baby could do with more support on her tights, rather than just under her bum. I reckon it just needs stretching more from bum to knee. Just go for a longer Tshirt to allow you to do that. Cool to see an inventive home made sling. Love my wrap though and my sarong, shawl and other bits of material I've managed to carry a baby it. Cheers for sharing this. :)

    @victoriaSlinglady Před 11 lety

    I wonder how the price of 3 t shirts would differ to the price of 5 meters of jersey cotton? Someone on a budget it might be cheaper for them to buy the fabric and get 2 or 3 slings from one length? You need to make sure people ask the retailers about the dyes used on the t-shirts some companies use AZO dyes which use heavy leads like mercury.. Not something you want a baby chewing. I think it's a great idea for an emergency situation sling most have t-shirts to hand. very creative

    T-shirt material varies greatly from shirt to shirt. Many are not strong enough to be made into a carrier. Then cutting increases the risk of tearing. This is not safe. You would never skimp and make a DIY stroller or car seat. Why skimp on something else that is meant to hold your most precious cargo. Buy a Moby, Baby K'tan, or Woven wrap. You can find them used on ebay or Craig's list for cheap!
