You'll understand why this song will stay in my heart after reading this: i had the good fortune of traveling around Europe for Christmas before COVID hit. My family and i all agreed that this trip was well deserved because 2019 was the worst year for us personally - my grandmother had passed a month after my sweet dog Bessie who i had ever since i was 5 (I'm 18 now), my brother had also gone through a messy breakup and i couldn't pass history and English because i didn't get on with the teachers. This trip began in Switzerland which was a dull jumping off point because we were all tired from an 8 hour layover and in winter it's very quiet. The moment when it picked up was on the train to the coast of Italy. While my parents were talking about the trip, my brother and i passed the time listening to music, sharing a single set of headphones. He hit shuffle and this song came on; i wasn't surprised since i knew he liked Hozier. I remember being in a depressed state until i looked out the window - passing us were the gargantuan Alps touching the clouds with the sun at mid-set, slanted hillsides with beautiful little cottages, nearby farms and plantations to which i saw snow on the ground for the first time. It would be an understatement to say that my entire mood had lifted as i listened to the Celtic-esque sound of this song, seeing things you never think you'd ever see in your life. I smiled the rest of the trip, relishing life as i know it and allowing me to remind myself what I'm truly grateful for, especially during 2020. I feel so much closer to my family and it's all because of this song and my dad for making the trip possible, even though i don't say it often. That's why this song will stay in my heart. Thank you Hozier
I feel somewhat similarly about this song. I’ve enjoyed wasteland baby since it came out however I mostly listened to my original favorites from the beginning of the album(sweet music, no plan, movement, and talk specifically). But for some reason I didn’t listen to the other songs as much. But I always loved how this album made me feel(I felt as if I was dancing in the woods with my lover whenever I heard most of these songs). Speaking of which I’m in a long distance relationship(him in Sweden, me in US) and because of Covid we were separated for over 2 years and everyday was excruciating. We tried to meet multiple times but everytime something would happen. They put a travel ban in place freakin 2 weeks before my trip to see him. And then when he planned to see me I suddenly got sick with Covid so we couldn’t. Finally april 2022 I was reunited with him. I listened to this album a lot as it’s my favorite. I was only able to visit for a week and on the plane ride back to the US I once again listened to this album. This time though I was dozing in and out of sleep so I listened to the full album instead of just my favorites. When it came to this song it sparked something in me even in my half asleep state. It reminded me deeply of everything I love in life, my partner included. It made me feel hopeful despite the distance with us. Ever since I’ve listened to it everyday. Even multiple times a day. I sing it, I scream it, I dance to it. I’ve had other favorite songs of course but not as deep as this one. I hope it’s okay to share my story, I was deeply touched by yours :)
True that I saw her hair like the branch of a tree Willow dancing on air before covering me Under garden and calicos Over canopies that was long ago True that love in withdrawal was the weeping of me That the sound of the saw must be known by the tree Must be felt 'fore the fight that calls Threatened fire but that was long ago And it's not tonight (Ooh) When I'm set alight (Ooh) I'm blinking so (Ooh) Your blinding light (Ooh) Oh, let's not tonight (Ooh) When you hold me tight (Ooh) Light the fire bright (Ooh) Let it blaze alright (Ooh) Oh, hope that you're good to me Oh you're good to me Hope that you're good to me, baby With the roar of the fire my heart goes to its feet Like the ashes of ash I saw eyes in the heat Sitting soft in this purest snow Fell in love with the fire long ago Each love I could lose I was never the same Watch it's still living roots be consumed by the flames I was fixed on your hand of gold Laying waste to my loving long ago And it's not tonight (Ooh) When I'm set alight (Ooh) I'm blinking so (Ooh) Your blinding light (Ooh) Oh, let's not tonight (Ooh) When you hold me tight (Ooh) Light the fire bright (Ooh) Let it blaze alright (Ooh) Oh, hope that you're good to me Oh you're good to me Hope that you're good to me, baby So you know there I stood As you licked off the grain Though I've handled the wood, I still worship the flame Long as ember, November glows All the wood that I'd loved is long ago And it's not tonight (Ooh) When I'm set alight (Ooh) I'm blinking so (Ooh) Your blinding light (Ooh) Oh, let's not tonight (Ooh) When you hold me tight (Ooh) Light the fire bright (Ooh) Let it blaze alright (Ooh) Oh you're good to me Hope you're good to me Hope that you're good to me, Oh Oh Hope you're good to me Hope you're good to me Hope that you're good to me, baby

This riff is tricky af, the fact he plays it with only his thumb and middle finger and also sings on top of it is incredible!!
I've been working on it for a few days and thought I should see how he plays it. Just going to continue using all 3 of my fingers + my thumb lol
Infatti è un bravissimo chitarrista❤tra l'altro ha tante chitarre diverse e suona tutte benissimo 😊
Thinking the same exact thing lol
His outfit here gives me Crowley vibes from good omens
I agree! The outfit, the hair, the glasses. Actually Hozier in general often gives me Crowley vibes. A lot of his songs too specially From eden.
GOOD OR SATAN BLESS U !!!!
I’ve never seen him so upbeat and animated before.
He’s high on molly
😂😂 I wouldn’t doubt it
He’s happy ;) This fest means a lot to him ☺️
I think he really likes playing this song :)
1:50 DAMN!
seriously though, i love what his voice is capable of so much 😭
Hozier makes me want to leave everything and go search for him. 💞
Me too 🥲
I've watched this video an unhealthy number of times
Saaaaame. The part where he sings, “That the saw must be *known* by the tree!” The way that he does live vs on the album? Guts me!! 🥰
Never unhealthy about us watching our wonderfully talented and creative gorgeous hozier over and over and over again and again - forever !
Ik it's absolutely staggering when u discover the singer barely needs autotune and can reach every note with ease
Same! but there’s really no such thing as an unhealthy number when it comes to music that moves you! 💜
Absolutely same, over the years I just can’t get enough of this recording!
Love this song ,one of the most important in Wasteland ,baby ... no it's not tonigh ...love be good to me ... baby
Love much this song ! Thanks
Actually, it says "Oh but you're good to me, you're good to me".

@@sarahkate9060 "Dancing in the woods with your lover" - well put :) Thanks, your story is lovely. I hated the travel restrictions too
man is the worlds best male vocalist hands down
I was at a kyak launch in the same state park that same day. I'm so angry I didn't know he was there or I would have paddled or walked over.
Hozier giving us everything
True that I saw her hair like the branch of a tree
Willow dancing on air before covering me
Under garden and calicos
Over canopies that was long ago
True that love in withdrawal was the weeping of me
That the sound of the saw must be known by the tree
Must be felt 'fore the fight that calls
Threatened fire but that was long ago
And it's not tonight (Ooh)
When I'm set alight (Ooh)
I'm blinking so (Ooh)
Your blinding light (Ooh)
Oh, let's not tonight (Ooh)
When you hold me tight (Ooh)
Light the fire bright (Ooh)
Let it blaze alright (Ooh)
Oh, hope that you're good to me
Oh you're good to me
Hope that you're good to me, baby
With the roar of the fire my heart goes to its feet
Like the ashes of ash I saw eyes in the heat
Sitting soft in this purest snow
Fell in love with the fire long ago
Each love I could lose
I was never the same
Watch it's still living roots be consumed by the flames
I was fixed on your hand of gold
Laying waste to my loving long ago
And it's not tonight (Ooh)
When I'm set alight (Ooh)
I'm blinking so (Ooh)
Your blinding light (Ooh)
Oh, let's not tonight (Ooh)

Oh you're good to me
Hope that you're good to me, baby
So you know there I stood
As you licked off the grain
Though I've handled the wood, I still worship the flame
Long as ember, November glows
All the wood that I'd loved is long ago
