      Thank you for this video! To me I don’t see massive concept shifts. They started as a mature, vocal focused group and added to that at times but didn’t veer too much toward cute or sexy. The fact that they didn’t find a big enough audience is more a reflection of the industry than anything they did or didn’t do. If they came out now I bet it would be different. The industry needs more groups like them to balance the girl crush/dance focused trend that most of the new groups are coming out with. Especially with groups like Gfriend and Berrygood disbanding

    I feel like 4th gen doesn't care about vocals anymore. Choreography and visuals are valued more/ above vocals. I have noticed that constant concept change has resulted in the failure of a lot of so many kpop groups. Kpop groups are most of the time fandom driven, so building even a small but solid fanbase is very important. Even if they do not get much GP attention during early days, focus should be given to making a strong fanbase that would keep supporting them for a long time.
    This is also one of the reason why none of the SM entertainment groups fail despite being constantly being called failures and hated on during early rookie days. SM has always stuck to original concepts for the groups no matter how repulsive the GP are towards it. This has helped them get devoted and strong fanbases who would go far and beyond to help the idols shine. The Fandoms end up getting attention and thus bring the groups to bigger spotlight, thus popularizing the groups even more. More people join the fandom this way and Thus result in huge success.

I think this will allow them to have longevity and relevancy down the line. SPICA I believe had great songs from the beginning but they didn't do a lot of variety shows and being a fan of kpop since '09 idol groups need to have that connection with the audience. Anyways, there was a moment where Boa said, "our strenght is singing, we can sing really good" and Hyori responded, "There are a lot of people who are good at singing but it's not enough to gain popularity". Well, not word by word, but with this meaning. Now, knowing the story behind their relationship, i think it migth hit them hard. Nevertheless, as bitter as it sounds, Hyori was right. when Spica were together, they were my second-favorite female kpop group....they will probably always be my overall second favorite female kpop group because i love power vocals in a group above anything else (yes, that's including visuals, concept, and these other quirky things that are now in demand for kpop groups)....each member of Spica are beautiful and very talented....it is truly a shame that we are not continuing to enjoy Spica and their great music....i love them and i truly miss them so much that it hurts....i wish someone could make one of their songs and videos go viral the way that one guy did with Brave Girls, and people react to it so much, and they begin to receive the love, recognition, and success that they so rightly deserved, that they will have to get back together to enjoy it all.

    I remember hearing about Spica from predebut thanks to Kim Kyu Jong and Heo Young Saeng (SS501) who were signed to B2M at the time. I was AMAZED at their vocal abilities and had high expectations. Then I started university and lost track of the whole Kpop industry until like 2 years ago. I remember I looked them up hoping they had been successful only to find out they had disbanded. It's really sad people slept on their talent, but I'm glad some of us still remember them fondly (^-^)

    Thank you for doing this video -
    Singly the best vocal KPOP group that ever existed - has there ever been a KPOP girl group where all 5 members could be lead singers in any girl group even now in 4th generation. There is no other group like Spica, I think the kpop fans failed to recognize their awesome talent because of failed marketing and stupid mistakes of B2m and Cje&m/Leoan - it is obvious to me that they had IU, Eric Nam, Nicole, Lee Myeori and others that were already successful and making money so why throw money away on a group that wasn't performing up to standards. Follow the money trail to find the truth
    Hopefully all these girls are still having careers in the field they enjoy the most

    Thanks for the info and your thoughts about why Spica didn't succeed. I didn't get into kpop until 2016 and didn't learn about Spica until I started looking into 2nd gen groups I'd missed so I appreciate your info and insights. Despite Spica's great vocals I'm not a big fan of most of their music with the exception of Tonight, which is one of my all time fav kpop songs. When I first watched Spica MVs they seemed like a group trying too hard to find an image that resonated with the public rather than artists expressing themselves. You could say they were themselves in the Tonight MV but imo that's one of the worst kpop MVs I've seen and I think it may have hurt the song on the charts. I think the difference between looking like you're trying to hit on a popular concept vs coming across as genuine might have something to do with why Spica didn't succeed as a vocal group doing a retro concept and Mamamoo did. Boa and Bohyung are doing a much better job of being themselves as Keembo and I hope they find success. Keembo is my fav new girl group since Khan, which is maybe a bad sign on two counts: my taste rarely aligns with popular taste and Khan was also a duo formed from the wreckage of a very talented group who deserved a much better fate. You might want to do a vid on the deja vu tragedy of The Ark and Khan.

    honestly i feel like why i liked spica so much is how all of their music sounded different but it was like uniquely them (kinda like how all of loonas tts and solo releases sounded so different but it all sounded like loona). i do feel like the company should've let them just really express themselves, we knew they had amazing vocals but their personalities were hidden by the company only pushing their vocals out and not getting them anything to show their personalities.

    • @loonas
      @loonas Před 3 lety +2

      the reason why mamamoo got success is because their company knew how to market them as a vocal group but also made them show their personalities and actually promoted them

    Honestly I came into Spica officially with Secret Time and I had that on repeat for a while. They really were the vocal queens. Frankly the Korean public is really fickle when it comes to groups. If groups don’t catch the public’s attention at the start or through some vital moment, it’s up in the air whether a group succeeds or not. I do think they should’ve found a concept and stuck to it and maybe not rely on Lee Hyori that much but what can ya do
