I can’t believe Metallica sampled the TF2 Engineer wrench hitting sound for the St Anger snare

Either that or you could replace it with the og Half-Life crowbar hitting metal sfx and I would not even begin to tell the difference...
I remember when I first got into Metallica I used to get all my music off of limewire. Unaware of this album's reputation I started downloading songs off of the album and I legit must've downloaded 4-5 copies of each song from different sources before I realized the album is SUPPOSED to sound like that and it wasn't some dogshit file somebody put onto limewire
Recently I got a file of Horrendous that sounds so much lesser quality than the original and it still eclipsed St.Anger without even a second thought
Lars’ secret plan to destroy limewire
i had trouble "understanding" the bad metal that dominated my friends CD players as a kid and my friend lent me St Anger to take home, to show me how good metallica is. That's a true story. It was probably 2004 and he was probably immersed in counter-propaganda marketing at release.
If I was gonna trust anyone's opinion on this, it would be a profile pic-less CZcams account named metaldude. That's not even a joke. I was a LimeWire guy too. Real recognises real.
'You flush it out' needs to be on the soundboard

It’s almost inspiring
“Sorry, those thieves at Napster stole my normal kit”
as a drummer, i fucking love the st anger snare. its overhated. i think its just a case of a sound used in the wrong context. the st anger snare would go extremely hard on a Kublai Khan track, for example, but it doesn't work for Metallica who was known for super technically clean playing and super clean mixing before St. Anger
I get a similar feeling when I see bad writing. I'm kind of impressed, but I also feel better about my work.
@@memphiskash no it’s not over hated it’s just kind of trash
@@me-ou3hs i just disagree man. i mean even Zach Hill's live snare for Death Grips sounds eerily similar to the st anger snare. its a good snare used incorrectly

@@chrome.beats.3worldlol so accurate

I think the review of this album on Apple Music is a refreshing read that doesn’t kiss Metallica’s ass, "St. Anger is certainly not Metallica’s best album musically, but it is their most compelling album psychologically. The title is not a misnomer: this is the sound of the most successful metal band in the world exorcising its demons."
This is what I like about the album, knowing what was going on during the recording, you know it's pure unaltered hatred. It's repetitive, pretty unoriginal and simplistic but it does sound genuine and it's a miracle there was even an album out of those sessions honestly.
I can see it working…on paper. In practice however it’s absolutely trash.
thats why theres a movie on the making of the album and a book on the making of the movie
It was extremely progressive of Metallica to hire an entire crew of completely deaf people as their production crew. (In 2003!!) On top of that, the band members elected to wear earplugs throughout the entire recording process so that the production crew would feel more included
The weird thing is bob rock produced it, same guy as the black album etc
The songs are actually good every song has a good riff and multiple good moments it’s just mixed badly
@@lightfeather9953 it's always interesting seeing the people behind legendary albums be part of making trash albums too
Just makes me wonder how someone who clearly has an ear for making quality music can listen to utter trash and go "yep, chuck on the album, sounds finished to me"

The album is a perfect window into how the band almost completely fallen apart while recording thanks to literal decades of pent up rage and ego getting in their way, its objectively bad but sometimes when im in a bad mood I listen to some of the songs to vent. The only true sin of this album I cant possibly get over is the torturous length of most songs, if everything would be 3-5 minutes at best and this was a short but very punchy garage thrasher it mighve pretty okay honestly, snare aside
Don't forget the copious drugs and alcohol that also completely lead to the seizures that are every single track.
@@Remedy462 This was the era where they started to get off booze and drugs which is why James was going to rehab and his wife demanding an 8-4 schedule like hes an employee really didnt help their case. The movie highlighted how and most importantly why is the song production terrible, im surprised they didnt disband with how disfunctional they were during 2001-2003
@@armandklink4843 oh, well that makes sense too. I thought it was too much drugs and alcohol that drowned the previous two releases: load and reload, but this was not having a clear headspace with withdraw, egos, and feeling constricted and boxed in. They should've disbanded or went on an extended hiatus to recover, decompress, seek therapy, and rediscover a love for metal and what their art means to them. But, you know, it's easy for me to tell someone what they should do than be in their situation and have to realize it myself.
The riffs are good just the snare is questionable
i feel the exact same way. the lyrics suck, the drums suck, the songwriting is decent at best, annoying at worst. despite al of that, it’s almost a windows into their emotions and how they felt at that time, so i don’t really care that it’s objectively bad, because i can feel the anger throughout the album.
What makes it even more crazy is that for most of the album Lars insists on hitting the snare double time and its completely unneeded even if the snare was tuned correctly
"What if we took the snare,
And replaced it with a gosh dang trash can?" - Lars 2003
Slipknot proved how that idea can actually work....but kept the snare because snare is good lol.
"What if we" - Everyone but Lars 2023.
There’s a video out there of him showing how to get that sound, he literally takes the snare off the snare, so you’re left with a no snare.
St. Anger is hilarious to me in the context that James Hetfield had recently gotten sober. Good for him, but like...he's metal's alcoholic stepdad, and St. Anger is the musical version of going home to visit and he's sober but somehow an even bigger asshole.
the STARK contrast between 5:31 and 22:19 is the perfect way to sum up how much of an absolute slog of an album this is lmao

Watching the original stream made me realize how weird time works, I listened to fear inoculum which is 1hr29mins and when I finished I hardly felt any of the minutes pass by like 1 song is 15 mins and when I put it on next thing I know I’m already 5mins in but with this every single second felt excruciating long I never felt a album feel this long before it’s pure pain
I KNOW MAANAANANANNNNN HOW DOES TOOL DO IT AND METALLICA SUCK SO MUCH ASS

Fear Inoculum is a great album, but even as someone who considers it their 3rd favorite album of all time, it REALLY had to grow on me to get there. First time around I would've called it my worst heard album of all time, later topped by St. Anger (then Lulu). It's probably because it was so different to the TOOL discography beforehand and I went in with very different expectations.

Also, some people have tried their hand at making videos like "X song if it was on Y album" with St. Anger songs. The best one by far being Frantic in AJFA style imo
Whenever the snare hits I just hear the metal pipe falling sound effect
Even listening to this album as a joke is a huge chore
It's like a leech that sucks all happiness and even anger out of life and leaves you a broken and hurt mess on the floor.
this whole album sounds like a THQ racing game for the Wii.
The scariest part is that all of these songs have millions of plays, not just Frantic and St. Anger.
The whole album was a social experiment. Metallica wanted make the worst possible album that they could without it being too obvious to see if people would still actually buy it, let alone like it, based on name recognition only. If this was their first album, we would have never heard from them again.
Metallica fans don't care if they make bad music, they're unconditional fans for life.
"All Within My Hands" has an absolutely AMAZING live version with the San Francisco symphony. Those of you who haven't seen it, see it.
Live acoustic version (on Metallica YT channel) is great too
i like the original better to be honest, their symphonic stuff isn't anything that great imo, their orchestrations don't add anything new
Metallica made a live album with the San Fransico Symphony in 2020, and that version of "All Within My Hands" is actually a very good rendition and does the song justice.

This album is only listenable when you’re going through some hard times tbh, it clicked for me when I was pretty depressed and it was the perfect soundtrack for me during that time, looking back on it now I don’t think it’s as horrible as I once did but it’s still not that great, the live versions of these songs absolutely slap tho
honestly could not have said it better myself
When I used to work at Taco Bell as a manager I got pissed at a few of the employees being dumb; so I connected my phone to speakers and started playing St. Anger. The other manager on duty walked up to me and said "You must be pretty pissed if you're playing this song outside of a workout....."
If you were depressed enough to relate to this horrible album I feel terrible for you
@@dreamofyouandi theres albums that capture that feeling without sounding like absolute ass, metallica really dropped the ball on this one
i associate this song with when i was really depressed in 2019 before i was admitted to a mental hospital and i cannot hate this album if i wanted to. that being said, the production always got on my nerves but i could see past that and knowing the state that the band was in at the time it acts as a time capsule. still rather listen to 72 seasons and death magnetics lack of dynamic range
This album is a collection of loud (like really loud) abrasive songs that for me, are actually pretty good individually. The bad ones are unlistenable, but the good ones at least rock out. Listening to it in its entirety was never going to work out. I listened to this album in full on the bus once, and got a headache halfway through.
Listening to 3 songs once in a while is how I take it
24:19 I FUCKING DIED
This feels like when a video game from a well known developer comes out broken and unfinished
If all the songs were like half as long this album would be legit great. The riffs slap, the lyrics are hilarious (unintentionally, but it’s still a positive for me), and the drum production never really bothered me. Also, All Within My Hands is a top 3 Metallica song and I’ll DIE ON THAT HILL
I even love the length. But I agree with all this too
I agree with the length being too dragged. All the songs feel like filler.
@@andrerey29 Yeah like they intentionally took out the extended bridges leading into a long guitar solo that their songs usually have, but instead of streamlining the songs by doing so they just added 2 more verse-choruses to each one that they really didn’t need. Still, I like the album overall
I love the album instrumental but I despise the lyrics, if they re-released it for it's 20th anniversary with reworked lyrics (or just a pure instrumental) it would be one of my favorite albums by them.
i respect the opinion but they have like 50 songs better than all within my hands, maybe if it was shorter and better written and produced i could see it, the remade acoustic version is pretty good tho
"this should've been a career killer"
It kind of was. Not that Metallica stopped making music or that they haven't had further influence, especially regarding DMCA and music on the internet unfortunately, but their relevance in the metal scene was nearly completely nixed after St. Anger. They'll always have the legacy of their first five albums but only reason many people still listen to anything new they put out at this point is to see if they're still making bad music.
EDIT: also the fact that they've only made three new albums in the 20 years since St. Anger, compared to seven albums in the 20 years preceding it
St. Anger should've been a warning for the state of the band going forward, even today
72 Seasons is plagued with the biggest issue of St. Anger: They no longer know when a song is dragging for too long, and they don't have enough cool ideas to warrant their length 90% of the time lmao
No way near a career killer tho. Metallica are as big they’ve always been and sell out stadiums all over the world. There priorities are different than from 20 years ago. They obviously don’t make music as they used to do, but not even close to a career killer.
death magnetic slaps and i will die on that hill
@@defaultdan7923 Honestly can't get into Death Magnetic, every song is a year long. I do really like Hardwired though even though I know its really nothing special haha
@@whatastandupguy3050 fair enough, i personally believe that the songs are justifiably long, but i can also stomach st anger so that might say more about me than anything. i feel the riffs in DM more than make up for the length.
For those that have sworn off the album, I encourage you all to listen to the radio edit of Some Kind of Monster because it sounds COMPLETELY different than the album version. The production is much cleaner and punchier, it's trimmed down to 4 minutes, and the pingy snare is toned down a lot. While it's still a little uneven structurewise, I think it actually sounds pretty great! Like it's crazy how much of an improvement it is. Honestly if the whole album sounded like that and the tracklengths had been shortened, it could have been pretty decent
I agree to an extent. The issues that are not related to the drums might still be there. Bad writing, no solos, riffs are hit or miss. I think shortening each song would do the album a ton of favors.
it's so weird that they didn't give the rest of the songs the same treatment as that radio edit

There's a really high quality remake of this by just one guy here on yt and with a normal sounding snare and slightly updated production a lot of the songs actually graduate to decent quality, notably the title track. To me this album's biggest sin is that its the most glaring example of metallica's biggest weakness: tone-deaf songwriting. They tried to capture the lightning in a bottle that was the nu-metal wave of the late 90s and early 2000s and in doing so revealed just how out of touch they were. Weirdly enough though, the songs have actually aged rather well, which isn't hard to see if you look up recent live performances of the title track. From a comment I read listening to that remake for the first time, "If this had been some unknown band's first album it would've been a huge success for them, but the reality is this came from Metallica."
Edit: its also worth noting that this was when it became obvious that metallica was surrounding themselves with yes men in the studio

as soon as the album started, all I could hear was "DONG DONG DONG" from the snare LOL
I still find it crazy how THIS album is what got me into metallica, i remember thinking to myself at the time, " Hmm, it's alright. I wonder how their other albums sound." Boy if i only knew
This album, despite being a colossal pile of garbage, sold more copies than Motorhead's entire discography, and was #1 in nearly 30 countries. HOW
as a longtime defender of this album (even though i think it's a 6/10 at best), this video actually makes me really happy lmao
i feel like the album is absolutely unconventional and you have to be in a certain mood to even begin to appreciate what it tries to do, but with that being said, i still understand why people hate it and agree with most of their criticisms. watching people's horrified reactions to songs i actually love (like frantic, the title track, sweet amber and the unnamed feeling) is always a treat to me
How to fix the album:
1. Cut all of the songs in half
2. Add appropriate interludes and guitar solos
3.Fix all of the cringey vocals
4.Get a different drummer???
5.Maybe a limp Bizkit feature?
6.Does anyone have any other ideas?
As a person that enjoys this album unironically this is hilarious to watch

St. Anger is one of those albums on my “so weird and interesting to me that I can’t hate it, but too terrible for me to say it’s good” list of albums. It sits proudly alongside Speedin Bullet 2 Heaven, Angelic 2 The Core, Philosophy of the World, and Honestly, Nevermind for me.

@@droptherapy2085 It’s a distillation of exactly everything people hate about Drake, turned to 11. Its monotonous but strangely chilly house music, full of weird moments (the “ruff” on Texts Go Green, the squeaky bed sample on Currents, “your pussy is calling my name,” the production on Liability, Jimmy Cooks existing on the album at all and being the final track no less), and people’s reactions to it are genuinely entertaining since even Drake fans were blown away by how off-putting it is. It’s the most interesting thing Drake has released in almost a decade now, exactly by being both weird and uninteresting at once.

I thought this was a members only reaction. Thanks for uploading 🤗
this is like the cyberpunk 2077 of metal albums
The backstory to the creation of this album is way more interesting than the album itself. Although I will say a positive about this album is that it’s noticeable that the band members were going through a lot, and the music clearly conveys some unhinged anger in it. I understand what this album is saying, but the sound of it is so grating on the ears that it’s hard to stick around.
Also, 🦵🛢🦵🛢🦵🛢
I think you're being distracted by the sound of the drums. Daryl Gardner here on CZcams covered and re-recorded the entire album, and when you hear a well-produced version Sr Anger, you can really appreciate how the songs are just awful, regardless of the snare
I love how Brad's body was trying to defend him from the music by knocking his ass out halfway through the album.
Bruh i havent even finished the vod and you've already edited and uploaded the stream. ADHD is fucked, im on day 3 of watching the VOD lol.
I relistened to St. Anger about a month ago because I wanted to get into Metallica's discography--I liked the first three albums a lot and then decided to return to it. It was both a better experience and a worse one at the same time. Better because a few songs positively stuck out and I wasn't really bothered by the snares. Worse because I forgot I had skipped half way through most songs and forgot how excruciatingly long the project was for each song. For a band that typically has some of the best long-run tracks, this was a pain to get through again, WITHOUT skipping.
Album art reminds me of Arthur's fist
Brad's random singing and rapping and talking and playing samples all sounded better and more well-planned and more well-produced than anything on the original track. It almost made the instrumentals bearable.

@@cotopaximusic you OK bro?
St. Anger, Some Kind of Monster, Invisible Kid, And a few others could be soo much better with just a little work. Trim the run time, add a solo. Etc. The drums are fine, there just too loud where other things get drowned out. There is a video of someone re-doing the album with proper production and in fixing the snare you loose a rhythmic element. Title Track Into and the breackdown in Some Kind of Monster hit harder with the snare. Very strong one TWO one TWO feel on the title track intro. It makes that riff for me. Just make the guitars louder and there a winner. But im also a SWANS Enjoyer. So. I love Experimental music like Nurse With Wound and such. Im used to abrasive sounds. But i found this album way before then, so idk.
i was expecting a reaction of and justice for all though!!
The bass drum does a better job at being a snare than the snare.
Watching the documentary changed my perspective on this album. I like what it stands for and how it fits within Metallica's history. It had to be made. Could it sound way better? Hell yes. The drum sound (how does one go from Black Album's drum sound to this monstrosity is beyond me), song length (some of the sections were legit copy-pasted in pro tools just to make the songs longer) are the main problems. The "live in studio" version kind of fixes the first one. There were a few guys who rerecorded the album back in 2015 I think and it's pretty decent.
Unnamed Feeling is to this day my favorite Metallica songs and I wish it was constructed in other way, because the lyrics are amazing (besides the "been here before" part)
Can’t believe y’all voted this album just to hear Brad trash it when he could’ve listened to Koi No Yokan a deftones masterpiece 😭
Maybe it can still happen. That album is a spiritual experience.
This was my introduction to Metallica in 2003, I was only 9 years old at the time, and it was what really got me into them. Then I listened to RTL and MOP and they blew me away and they became my favourite band
we deserve justice now
I hate that this was my introduction to Metallica; the song St. Anger will always have a place in my heart because of waking up at 6 in the morning to see the music video before school....
At least you have childhood nostalgia to kinda color this album in a better light than most of us who were just absolutely beaten to near death and spat on in a weeping mess on the floor lol.
And Justice for All also has pretty bad production but the musicianship and songwriting is just as good as their first three albums. It’s even a little been more musically progressive even. That’s why people generally still like that album compared to this one.
I really don't like the snare on that album either tbh.
AJFA has perfect production gtfoh
@@natoba4617 at least it doesn't sound like bongo drums tho
@@SLENDAMANN bruh no. Bruh, the main producer wasn't there for the mixing which is why it turned out really badly. Also James decided to be a jackass and put Jason's bass at 10% volume and left the rest at 100%
WHA??? Members video uploaded early?? Thanks Brad! btw has Koi No Yokan been filmed yet?
“Aside from the snare” is like “but other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”
I love this album unironically but Brad's reaction was still priceless.
