It was very popular in the Philippines, and still is. A lot of Filipino singers covered his song, like Gary Valenciano (2000) (the most popular Filipino cover). There was even a Tagalog version by Lito Magnaye in 2012 entitled “Ako'y Narito”.
The song is very popular because it's a Gospel song.

I have commented to this before that singing is a way of life for us Filipinos. Its a way of our expressing ourselves in sadness, happiness, in love among other things. That's how we keep our mental state healthy.
