  • The North American wood duck is one of the most striking and beautiful of all waterfowl.
I remember the first time I saw a wood duck in real life. I stared at it in awe as it didn't seem to be real. It was like looking at a painted sculpture floating on the water. While all birds are beautiful in their own right, wood ducks are truly living works of art.
I'm excited to share with you some unique behaviors about the wood duck that may surprise you. In this video, we'll cover some of the basics and then get into what really sets this bird apart from other water fowl, and how wood ducks have tremendous courage.

Have you found an injured or orphaned bird or wildlife?
Do a quick search for a wildlife rehabilitation clinic in your area. They will tell you what to do. Do not attempt to rehabilitate a bird or animal on your own.

This channel is a hidden gem. As for interesting facts, I wasn't aware of the leap the ducklings must make - brave little things!

We raised a wood duck hybrid and he chooses “ME” every breeding season (he’s infertile). He is very protective of me during that time. First thing every morning he flys to the door and waits for me, then comes inside yelling at me then shows me how to sit on the faux nest I made for his manly-hood. Each season I hatch a couple of babies in the incubator and he is right there when they hatch and he becomes aggressive with me if I’m not covering them. Then he guides me to his large natural pond and introduces the ducklings to the flock. Again very protective of them, he shows them how to dive and where to find the best food. We’ve done this 5 times already. He has lots of lady-ducks that he mingles with every day, but coke breeding season, he is sitting at my door step. The last hatch we raised was a male white call duck and a male wood duck. They live with their dad on the pond, but are pretty independent. It’s funny to see the white callduck hanging out with the wolf wood ducks that our wood duck introduced him too. The wood duck is super friendly with those he recognizes and he flys to us when we call him. They are extremely smart.

Great information, as I have come to expect. I must say, these videos are some of the most polished videos I have seen on CZcams.
I love wood ducks and they are now back at local ponds. I have gotten some nice images but none high up on trees yet.
Fall is a great time, as Northern Pintails, Harlequin Ducks, and other birds return to the Puget Sound area from their summer adventures.

I'm lucky enough to live in an area where these are around year-round. Took them for granted until I moved away!

Very interesting 👌. So surprising that this gorgeous Duck 🥰 perches and climbs on trees 😲. And "steeling" the nesting places of other ... predators must make the parents and chicks vulnerable 😩.

I love um . I live in a river and lake region its awesome to be in their presence. I have witnessed some spetacular sightings over the years. Keep up the good work .we all need to be more involved with the Woodys. If they flourish all else will .
