  • Here is another song I wrote, arranged and performed in the Gothic language. This time, it is about the Battle of Guadalete, fought by King Roderic of the Visigoths, who is considered to be their last king, against the Umayyad Caliphate who were beginning the Muslim Conquest of Spain in the year 711. It is thought that the defeat really spelled the end of the Gothic language in Spain, as Latin was rapidly becoming the language of government anyway and had already reduced the status of Gothic to a daily conversational tongue for many. Guadalete was the final nail in the coffin.
    The generally accepted consensus is that Roderic was abandoned during the battle by other Visigoth nobles who had pledged their aid but sought the throne, so wished to see Roderic fall in battle. They were stationed on the flanks but withdrew as the enemy cavalry approached, leaving the Gothic army surrounded. It appears, however, as though the rivals of Roderic were slain in the battle anyway as they attempted to escape. This was the beginning of hundreds of years of Islamic dominion in Spain.

      Norse / Icelandic / Gothic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Faroese / Danish / Welsh / Breton / Cornish are the prettiest languages ever created and they have the most epic songs, but all other Germanic and modern Celtic languages are also gorgeous, so the songs with such lyrics tend to be really good with pretty melodies, and I am learning them all - I highly recommend learning these languages 2gether, as they are way too pretty not to know, and any other Germanic languages!

    I do suppose that by 711 the Visigothic kingdom and church were increasingly using Latin and the local Romance (post-Latin) dialects that would eventually become Castilian Spanish, Gallego, Catalan and Portuguese. Gothic language might have even been thought of as being related to the already eradicated Arianism and thus purposefully avoided.

    What a surprise ! I've been watching Fatih Al-andalus, an arabic novel about the conquest of the Visigothic Kingdom, it's immersive. In this novel, Roderic is portrayed as a typical tyrannical and smart ruler, who seized the power by force, and the visigothic nobility is divided between valiant men, like Count Alfonse, and unrelieble princes.

    • @CarvedStones
      @CarvedStones Před 3 měsíci +15

      We really don’t know much about Roderic other than what the later Asturian/Leonese:Castilian chronicles wrote about him and his cousin Pelayo. According to that, he usurped the throne as vengeance for Witiza blinding his father in cordoba, Witiza’s sons of course were suppose to be heir to the throne so they got the Muslims to be on board with overthrowing him so they can take it for themselves.
      However the Muslims realizing how unstable the kingdom really was, just decided to take over and the traitors were just accepting of that. While the last bastion of Roderic’s men fled to Asturias where they would make a small warband of Visigoths, Ibero-Roman, and Celtic fighters.

      @@user-et8xw7dj7v The main issue was a lack of any real unity. The Visigoths unlike other Germanic tribes always centered around a strong leader, which is why back in their pagan days their kings use to be both king and judge. Unfortunately whenever there’s an unjust leader, they feed them to the dogs immediately.
      The Visigoths did survive after the invasion though but they blended into the local populations. As they would become part of the northern Iberian kingdoms that would fight in the reconquista, others would be Muslim and lead their own dynasties, while the rest would still be Christians living in conquered Muslim territory.

Being surrounded by Latin speakers and a different and more dominant Christian sect ultimately made them speak Latin more fluently. King Roderic violated a generations old custom maintained by the line of Visigothic Kings. The custom was to place another lock upon the door of a room in a tower in the city of Toledo.Instead of following this custom, he instead broke the locks and found a chest in the room. There was written warning that indicated that, essentially, when this custom was broken, the Visigothic Kingdom would end. He violated the principle of the Runa, or Mystery and paid the price. This story can be found in The Mysteries of the Goths by Edred Thorsson.

    Querido amigo.

    Not the happiest of the subjects, actually quite a sad one, showing some cowardice from the part of the other "noble" visigoths, but in my opinion this is one of the versions that your essence is most present on, that warlike-battle field style. As I closed my eyes I could see a glimpse of the visigoths marching into battle and suffering from the missiles of the muslims, and at the end King Roderic falling from his horse and being stabbed. I guess no one is able to do a better song about Guadalete 711.

    Magnificent! And I love your insertion of the rest of the "Atta Unsar" in spoken word, although it is unfortunately overwhelmed by the music.

      Cheers, my friend. The prayer is actually behind the music by design. The way I was picturing it was that a warrior was praying to himself before entering battle while the chaos of the march blared around him
