Roasting Chicory For Coffee

  • Did you know that chicory root makes a great coffee alternative? Or added to coffee grounds it helps to stretch your coffee just a bit further.
    You'll recognize the blue flowers of the chicory plant throughout summer, but it is during the fall when it's best to dig the roots. Try to do it after a rain as the roots run deep and can be much easier to pull up. And get ready for your kitchen to smell great while it's roasting! Chicory is caffeine free so enjoy a cup or two!

    Chicory is super invasive in BC. I like finding ways to use the plants I pick during my patrols, so thank you!

    I roast it as I need it for five minutes in a hot-air popcorn popper. Works great. Got the idea from how some coffee roasters use hot air to roast their coffee beans.

    My German grandma used to make chickory coffee especially during the depression and ww2. I have an instant mix from Germany and it's pretty good and it has like roasted wheat etc. but I want to roast the chickory myself and use it. Thank you for this nice video.

    I got hooked on chicory coffee while in Louisiana. I have always bought it and never paid attention to what it was made from. I can't believe I could be growing my own. I need to look up some seeds to start next Spring. Thanks for the share!!

      Chicory is an incredibly common road shoulder weed. I would never waste effort or garden space growing it.

    You have the most beautiful hands and pleasant voice! I live in Southwest Michigan and have a lot of chicory growing every where! I also have a antique cast iron coffee grinder that I plan to use for the grinding that was my Grandmothers. My Mother always told me that coffee ground with a cast iron grinder has a better flavor. 😊

    Wow; wonderful video! :) My mother grew up drinking chicory enhanced coffee, and always remembers it so fondly, so I was interested to experiment with it myself. I'm so surprised that that particular plant is where it comes from, because it's very bountiful (and gorgeous!) where I grew up. Thanks for the great video! :)

    Well you have a new subscriber. I have been wanting to try this. I found my first plant along the side of the road. There was only one so I didn't dig up the roots. I left it alone. Then the county came by the next day and cut the side of the road. But I found some more but I didn't know when to dig it up. Now I know. I will wait a month before I dig it up. Thanks for the great informing video. It doesn't grow that much around the U.P.

      Thanks for subscribing. If you don't get much up there you can always combine it with dandelion root. That was very common "way back when". Better tasting than the burnt acorn "coffee", too. Lol

      I tried the acorn coffee and even made acorn cookies. ( you can't put enough chocolate chips in them to drown out the acorn taste. Lol). As for the coffee it wasn't too bad.

    Thanks for the video! We found a baby cricket in our house and are raising it for fun. We read that they really like chicory, and I'd always heard of chicory, but never tried it as a hot drink. So now we're killing two birds with one stone, but hopefully not the cricket, and I've dug up some local chicory. Fed some to the cricket, the rest is for eating and brewing.
    One question, I read that you want to harvest chicory root before or after flowering. Have you heard that before?
    Also, apparently you can eat the leaves in salad in moderation. Supposedly bitter but healthy. I'm going to try that later.
    Thanks!

    • @HomesteadingWays
      @HomesteadingWays  Před 4 lety +1

      I think it would depend on what part of the plant you're looking to harvest. Above ground parts are usually more tender before flowering. Roots are usually harvested after flowering or at the end of the season to ensure larger/longer roots. Hope this helps!

    • @HomesteadingWays
      @HomesteadingWays  Před 5 lety +2

      You may find one or two seed companies that sell them otherwise just wait until the flower heads die off and collect the seed then.
