@@RA-vp1vn Maybe you are the one who should further your education, because the issues confronting macaques are much bigger and more complex and complicated than you appear to realize. I am educated, which is why I have a hard time understanding why you are so concerned with YoYo when there are so many macaques in much worse situations and so many more pressing issues to be concerned about. How do you know YoYo was poached? YoYo is a stump-tailed macaque and he likely was poached, but with so many macaques being born on breeding farms now it is almost impossible to tell where the pet monkeys on social media originated from. BUT regardless of where YoYo came from, Nguyen did NOT travel deep into the remote part of the rainforest and poach him, he was not even the first human to keep him as a pet. There are many issues confronting macaques and it is unfair to single out any one of them without understanding and acknowledging all the complexities. You mention the SMAC as though it is some legal entity, it's NOT, it is a coalition of animal rights groups who aim to work together to help "collaborate with social media platforms in order to end the availability, spread and profitability of cruelty content, and to ensure that there are no benefits to the creation or promotion of cruelty content." The same thing each of the groups has been doing individually for years and years and while it is important and commendable work, it is also nearsighted and unlikely to bring about any meaningful change. I don't know how many of these channels you watch, but you might notice almost all pet monkey owners start off with newborn infants who were either poached from the wild or bred in captivity. It is not hard to get a pet monkey in most Asian countries, the wildlife trade is alive and well and goes on unimpeded under the wink and nod laws put in place by governments to appease the animal rights groups. If you notice pet monkey keepers are not hiding, they take their pets to stores, eating establishments, etc. etc. and NO ONE is getting arrested. In Vietnam the same agency that oversees the export of legal goods from the rainforest is the SAME agency responsible for policing the illegal removal and sale of prohibited and protected animals and products. The department under the Ministry of Forestry NEEDS the cooperation of the hunters to get a steady supply of legal animals for sale and export and they are afraid that if they clamp down on the much more lucrative endangered animal trade the hunters will no longer bring them legitimate products for export. (The system works about as well as putting children in charge of the candy store.) It is easy to purchase a pet monkey in Vietnam, the "Exotic Animal Market" is a prominent and permanent structure in the middle of Saigon and is even listed in the official government sanctioned tourbook... ANYONE can go there and purchase a pet infant monkey. In other words, it goes on right underneath the government's nose and little to nothing is done about it and it is not just monkeys... It is not uncommon to see comments from viewers encouraging "pet" monkey owners to return the animal to its rightful mother in the wild, but those who suggest those things are clearly ignorant to the reality of what they suggest. The pet monkey owners are almost never the people who poached or bred them and they would not know where to return them even if it was a viable option. "Pet" monkeys are purchased in the same way some in the US purchase pets at flea markets. It is easy to say these people are cruel or bad or driven by greed and while there is much about the "pet" monkey industry that is wrong, it is more than a little disingenuous for viewers to judge when in reality almost ALL of US benefit from the misery of macaque monkeys in some way. You see, in many of the same countries where it is illegal to capture, breed or keep macaques as pets, it is perfectly legal to breed and possess them for scientific research. Macaque monkeys are the most widely used breed of monkey for medical and scientific research and each year countries around the world breed and export hundreds of thousands of monkeys to be used for research purposes. The US currently imports approximately 30,000 primates each year for research and testing. The long-tailed macaque was actually elevated from "vulnerable" to "endangered" in 2022, due to exploitation by the research industries. Lab monkeys do not live good lives, YoYo lives like a KING compared to those in labs, most never leave their cages, breathe fresh air or feel grass beneath their feet, to say nothing of the pain and sickness they experience as a result of the testing and experimentation. Almost everyone alive today has benefitted from the medical and scientific breakthroughs made possible as a result of the research and experiments conducted on primates. There is a great deal of hypocrisy in our society when it comes to primates and macaques in particular. While so many parts of the world worry about "pet" monkeys and pass laws prohibiting it, those same countries are perfectly comfortable with their citizens owning monkeys for work related purposes. If you've consumed coconut oil, coconut meat or products containing coconut lately, there's a good chance it was imported from Thailand. And if it was, there's an even better chance the farmer who grew that coconut had a monkey like Yoyo fetch it from a tall tree. Coconut farmers in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India and other countries in the region frequently rely on monkeys, too. Thailand has been raising and training pigtailed macaques to pick coconuts for roughly 400 years. These working macaques are sent to schools where we are told they are taught how to pick coconuts. These working monkeys are tethered to trees where they pick coconuts throughout the work day and are kept as pets by their owners outside work hours. Those who work in the industry say the majority of coconut picking macaques work in a cruelty free environment, but this is not the case for all working monkeys and there are cases of abuse and neglect. 99% of coconuts in Thailand are picked by macaques and animal rights groups cite numerous cases of handler abuse including whippings and cases of monkeys being dangled by their tethers. I am just guessing, but I would think any of those working monkeys would be happy to trade places with YoYo. Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in an ideal world where animals lived free from human interference, use, exploitation and abuse? I think we can all agree that it would be, but we don't live in that world. We live in a world where humans have used animal labor to increase productivity, to make tasks more manageable and to entertain us since the beginning of time and likely always will. The state of affairs with macaque monkeys is quite convoluted and none of the situations I described is an ideal life for such a beautiful and intelligent creature, but is any one of these situations really any better or worse than any other? Is it fair to throw unkindness and negativity at this family or any of the people who keep pet monkeys while we drink our coconut milk and take our Ozempic, Wegovy, Tezspire or other medication tested safe for our consumption by a macaque? Is it fair to judge those in Asia for keeping macaques as pets when it is completely LEGAL to keep them as pets in 24 states in the USA? Why isn't anyone waging a campaign for any of those macaques? We do not have to agree with wild animals living as pets to recognize that YoYo is better off living as a pet with Nguyen and his family than picking coconuts or living in a small cage in a lab!!!!
