  • Caitlin Clark's fans are increasingly calling for the resignation of Indiana Fever Women Basketball head coach over comments she made at a WNBA preseason game. Christie was asked about Caitlin Clark and the fans didn't like what she said. What was it that angered Caitlin Clark's fans that much?

Drafting a generational player #1 overall to a losing team. You build a team around Clark not have her build around a losing system. Stop hamstringing Clark's athletic ability by making her part of a losing system. The Celtics built their team around Larry Bird.

And, so does she...I'm sure that would break the Nike contract...and if she left like that, in such a ego ridden bad way, her brand would suffer in general. If the Big3 contract is even on the table, it may just be removed. And, if she quit now, she definitely would not be on the Olympic team since these early games were supposed to be her "try out". CC's brand depends on being a success in the WNBA...she needs them, and they need her, and so do ALL the players, all the coaches, all the team owners, all the cities where the Fever plays. It's not that the Fever needs to adapt to Clarks play. The Fever needs to utilize and exploit the play of Clarks shooting, prowess and passing. Its coaching 101, if there is a long distance shooter that extends the floor for the defense to cover, therefore Clarks fellow players will have numerous options to contribute more than previously. Look at Iowa, no really exceptional outstanding players, including Clark. What Clark has is called basketball prowess, the ability to bring the best out in other players. Clarks long distance shooting is going to propel Indiana to the best record in the WNBA this year. Watching the Iowa games, the team did not have much height, but the floor was expanded to where guards were getting rebounds, that is what makes Clark exceptional. The year before Coach Sides came, the Fever only won 5 games. She improved the team to 13 wins, with several of the losses being in very close games. She has specifically stated that she has NO intention of stopping CC from shooting long 3s. Once Kelsy Mitchell is back in the line-up, Caitlin won't be constantly double-teamed, and then she will be able to score more efficiently from distance (then Mitchell & Samuelson, both excellent 3 point shooters, will draw the defense away from CC).

It is bad for the coach because fans were well aware of the "144" difficulty spike that every panelist is suggesting will inhibit her dominance at the next level; however, when you start speaking like she did in the pressers after pre-season games and even dare to comment on anything except your own faults in coaching the roster up to that point, then it is laughable and a definite result of inferior coaching ability. You put that target on your back because if you have one poor showing, every single fan or critic will review the plays you called, the performance of your team, your substitutions and anything related to matchups, lineups, timeouts, and challenges that are all solely the coach's responsibility. If this is what you wish to bring on yourself; and was your goal: congratulations! Otherwise, it is definitely wrong to call out a player that has arguably been the greatest OFFENSIVE TALENT on the history of college basketball in the NCAAW history. After just one game, we all witnessed that what she CAN DO as player will translate on the next level offensively, so we have no real worry and meme'd anybody out there for having doubts or snide remarks towards her. What is common is questioning if she will be unprepared on the defensive end, and a liability and Clark was more than capable of proving herself on that end the next game. Now, we only have one question: what is the formula for winning and repeating a successful program with this "obviously" loaded team on the offensive side.
There aren't questions anymore about Clark's transition to the WNBA--she shut those down already to this point--so we are questioning how does the coach now utilize the talent and pace the talent throughout the year as a whole... Frankly, most people are noticing red flags left and right just by watching gameplans that the coach has strict control over and lineups and even offensive sets. Unless Clark is the one that comes up these makeshift lineups and play-calling, you cannot criticize a more than capable player of "how to play" the game when as a coach you have already shown how you can't coach a team with this "same roster" but adding three new players and two rookies to the mix from the last year. You are: 13 wins! You are awful! There's nothing that would be different if this same roster performed horribly under you. You have a horrible track record already set in stone.
Boston, Mitchell, Smith, Berger, Hull, Wheeler, Wallace, Saxton, and a DNP candidate are all returning players on your roster. You simply added Katie Lou, Temi as a backup center, and then two rookies: Caitlin Clark and Celeste Taylor. How do you not have ANYTHING remotely resembling any form of offensive game plan already in place for basic game-performance by now?
You should have had 4+ years of reviewing your scouting reports of Clark's games already by the time you were even eligible to draft as a top 1 pick. You probably should have been doing that the moment you failed to make any playoff push anyway. Therefore, you should already have an idea of how to calibrate your offensive potential from that to make your team a better team as a whole. Take her strengths, and adapt them to your previous gameplans and then run with those sets; adjust if they can be improved as the year progresses. There is absolutely no excuse why your team cannot score at all in the last minute of a game during a tight game. There is no excuse why your team starts -16 in a game with your starting lineup. You should have already had a concept in place for your team's identity and how it uses a player like Clark to maximize your gameplan.
Nobody on TV saw that in the second game and absolutely was outraged by your post game statements. So, now instead of looking at the win as a win, they all review the game in stretches and see that as a coach you were flabbergasted by the other team's head coach, they saw you were getting demolished in offensive play calls, they saw how incapable your lineups looked, they saw how poor some sets seemed and why there was mostly static plays going on. Contrary to the opposing team's performance, they could notice effective play calls that allowed them to scorch your defensive mismatches for a 70% field goal percentage. Only one player missed any shots, to be honest. They saw how the other coach took out their first and second string and then played the third strings. They saw the same in the previous game where your offensive outburst from Clark put you in position to break away in offense, but you couldn't run any semblance of offensive playcalling from your roster despite having like 9 returning players on your roster from last year!
It is now entirely on your shoulders to show a presentable debut of your team that people with two eye sockets can tell has three highly capable offensive players that demand attention, so defensive schemes will leave someone else open to have a free shot. As a coach, we expect some semblance of an actual play-call that exhibits that in action. We gotta see some consistency in your sets near the end of the game otherwise as a coach you are absolutely wasting the team's potential.

I got the impresssion she has a little animosity toward Clark. I also get the impression she established she was in charge. That being said she is in charge and if she see's where Caitlin can improve ist her job bring it to her attention. I do understand were fans are comming from. I do think the fans should not be asking her to resign. I hope its just growing pains.

Time will tell if Clark's coach is any good. Clark will be on television enough for the world to see. Clark does have new things to learn which she admits, however can the coach get the best out of the fever with two stars on the court?
