Incidentally Buddhadeb Guha was a great fan of Ray. In a documentary he had declared it. Even his hero Rijuda was a shadow of himself and Ray & lived in Bishop Lefroy road. Truly a great video. No matter what the opinions were between the 2 it was interesting to learn about the differences of 2 great Bengali icons.

While an acute fan of Ray from early childhood, I must say Buddhadev Guha's argument is absolutely spot on over here. Ray's rejoinder was not only sparse in logic and reason but also unnecessarily cantankerous. A towering intellectual like him could have perhaps appreciated the nuanced points made by Buddhadev-babu. আমি লেখক বুদ্ধদেব ভট্টাচাৰ্য র অনেক লেখা পড়েছি তবে ওনার সময় কার অন্য অনেক লেখক আমার অনেক বেশী পছন্দের. আর ওনার গান গাইবার স্টাইল আমার একেবারেই না পসন্দ. সত্যজিৎ এর সিনেমা র আমি বড় ভক্ত এবং সত্যজিৎ এর লেখা ও আমার ভীষণ ভালো লাগে. কিন্তু সত্যজিৎ এর একটা অহংকার ছিল, কারণ বিদগ্ধ জনেরা বলবেন. উনি একটা সময় ভাবতেন বাংলার সংস্কৃতির যে কোনো ব্যাপারে উনি যা বলবেন সেটাই শেষ কথা.
সত্যজিৎ রায় এবং বুদ্ধদেব গুহ, দুজনেই আমাদের কাছের শ্রদ্ধেয় ও বরেণ্য মানুষ। এটি পূর্বে কমবেশি জানা ছিল। ওঁদের মতপার্থক্য, কোনো অস্বাভাবিক নয়। এরকম অসংখ্য ঘটনা চোখে পড়ে। এর মধ্যে না ঢুকে, ওঁদের নমস্কার জানাই।
এই চমৎকার ভিডিওটি দেখে যখন মন্তব্য লিখছি, তখন বুদ্ধদেব গুহ পাড়ি দিয়েছেন অমৃতলোকে। এই দুই অতি প্রিয় Iconic বাঙালি আর আমাদের মধ্যে নেই, কিন্তু তাঁদের মধ্যে বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত সংলাপ রয়ে গেল পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের কাছে। সত্যজিৎ রায় পরিষ্কার ভাবেই বলেছিলেন, ফিল্ম করার জন্য যে নিখুঁত পর্যবেক্ষণ প্রয়োজন,সেটা সব সাহিত্য কর্মে থাকেনা । যাঁদের লেখায় সেটা থাকে, তাঁদের গল্প বা উপন্যাস থেকে ছবি করতে সুবিধা হয় । উনি এটাতো বলেননি যে,এই পর্যবেক্ষণ না থাকলে সেটা সাহিত্য নয় ! এক মাধ্যম থেকে আর এক মাধ্যমে যাওয়া মানে কপি করা নয়,সেটা মহান স্রষ্টা এবং সৃষ্টির Transcreation হয়, script ও literal translation হয়না। সুতরাং বুদ্ধদেব গুহর এতো উষ্মার কারণটা বুঝলাম না। উনি নিজেই তো জঙ্গলের যে অসাধারণ বর্ণনা লিখে গেছেন,তা ওনার প্রকৃতিকে গভীর ভালোবাসা,জ্ঞান এবং পর্যবেক্ষণের ফল !! তাছাড়া সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ব্যক্তিগত চিঠি বইয়ে ব্যবহার করাও বোধহয় ঠিক হয়নি। ঠিকই,এই দুই মহান ব্যক্তিত্বের চিন্তার জগতে তরঙ্গদৈর্ঘ্যের তফাৎ ছিল। কিন্তু এই illuminating বিতর্কে আলোকিত হলাম আমরা।।

I am an avid watcher of Ray films and consider him to be the greatest cinematic genius ever..However, vis a vis the debate between the cinematic genius and the literary genius I must say Mr.Buddhadeb Guha is right on the money with his analysis that novelists are not obligated to make their works rich in cinematic value and may or may not capture every minute detail, depending upon the theme of the novel. A true raconteur will always ensure that the the flow of the story does not get disrupted in his quest for meticulous detailing.. Having said that one has to agree with Ray that some of the novelists of the yore like the great Bibhutibhashan Bandopadhyay had a great penchant for detailing which never acted as a deterrent in the path of story telling. On the contrary, it made his novels all the more engrossing, which is quite evident in Pather Panchali. But ofcourse it is completely at the novelist's discretion as Buddhababu pointed out. Before I conclude I would like to wish Buddhababu who is battling against the deadly virus currently a very speedy recovery and sign off with that wonderful line of his" A novelist's pen is not the lens of a camera".Well said sir..
I am a ray fan ..but couldn't support his logic here. Buddhadev Guha's comment has merit and logic. The way Ray family filed case for publishing those letters that really shows an autocratic mentality. Roy and Guha both belong to different niche but the way Roy has interpreted literature here from the angle of films really can't be justified. সাহিত্য সিনেমার প্রতি দায়বদ্ধ নয় মোটেই।" A novelist's pen is not camera's lens " ..what an amazing argument from Guha
I personally see merit in Roy's approach! Detailing is not for any other purpose but to be truthful to the plot of the story! A writer is free for "....Apon Moner Madhuri Mishaye..." but the surroundings should be realistic and that needs research and certainly hard work! Refer, historical novels of Sharadendu Bondyopadhyay. I presume that's the pain point for most of the average writers which Mr Guha understood and being a Bengali shovinistic, reacted 😆
Very authentic video. I am aware of these facts when "chan ghore gaan" was published. This fact came into news papers. Later on I read that book but there Satyajit Ray letter was not there.

I had heard in the early 1990s - after Satyajit Ray's death - that Sandip Ray had started a court case against Buddhadev Guha for using a personal letter in one of his publications but didn't come to know the real reason behind it (I was not in India at that time). Just today, after almost thirty years, I have come to know what actually took place - together with the background information - from your video. I will rate your video as excellent.

There was nothing wrong if 2 people disagree and have different view on any subject. ..but clearly Buddhadeb Guha crossed the line when he included Ray's letter in the book which Ray clearly wished to be one to one. ...especially when Ray was no more and in no way his consent could not be obtained.

He might have pointed out why many modern novels are not film worthy but he didn't criticize them as worthy works of literature. These are two completely different things. Failure to understand him is at the root of the controversy.
Both of them are acclaimed artists but of different forms. One is mainly a novelist and the other one is a film maker. I think Buddhadeb Guha's remarks have merits. On the other hand SR made an untoward attack by saying 'we have a different wave length'. That was un called for from a person of world repute.
Satyajit Ray is a man of classical nature who owned a capability of indifferent observation whereas Mr Budhdev Babu a commercial and egoist nature of celebrity so it is meaningless to bring them two in comparison under a same height of basement.

Besides legality, as a common man I find the observations of Satyajit Roy, completely personal opinion from a particular perspective (film making) and I fully endorse it! On the contrary Mr Guha's attitude was completely illogical, protectionist, partisan and unwanted, to say the least! It's a typical local Bengali attitude which lacks wholistic view!!

A giant like Ray would be very justified in his comments...however, Budhhadeb babu's was a pertinent rejoinder...but..but...it's a debate! End of the day both can differ for sure...
Literature is far deeper and profound than cinema. Cinema is limited by visual boundaries. Literature can present complex thoughts and emotions far better than cinema.

Roy was a very talented person and of rare qualities. Although he was known more as a film maker than a novelist, his analysis here were more to the point and brilliant. In contrast, though Guha too is very talented, intellectual and more importantly an established novelist, he appeared to have lost focus. Inclusion of Roy's letter in his book did hint a touch of commercial interest. My opinion.

Incidentally Buddhadeb Guha was a great fan of Ray. In a documentary he had declared it. Even his hero Rijuda was a shadow of himself and Ray & lived in Bishop Lefroy road. Truly a great video. No matter what the opinions were between the 2 it was interesting to learn about the differences of 2 great Bengali icons.

While an acute fan of Ray from early childhood, I must say Buddhadev Guha's argument is absolutely spot on over here. Ray's rejoinder was not only sparse in logic and reason but also unnecessarily cantankerous. A towering intellectual like him could have perhaps appreciated the nuanced points made by Buddhadev-babu.

বুদ্ধদেববাবুর এইকথাটা, 'সাহিত্যের ক্ষেত্রে detailing অতটা important নয়', এটা যদিও ঠিক বুঝলাম না, সাহিত্য তো মানুষের জীবন সম্পর্কে যে পর্যবেক্ষণ ক্ষমতা সেখান থেকেই আসে, তা নাহলে তো সবাই সাহিত্য লিখতে পারতো, বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের ওই নিখুঁত পর্যবেক্ষণ এর জন্যই ( যেমন আরণ্যক) রায় সাহেবের চোখে ওনার কাজ অনেক উঁচু দরের। এবং সেইজন্যই উনি লিখেছেন যে আমিও একটু আধটু লিখি তাই ওই detailing ব্যাপার টা আমিও জানি কতটা important

এই চমৎকার ভিডিওটি দেখে যখন মন্তব্য লিখছি, তখন বুদ্ধদেব গুহ পাড়ি দিয়েছেন অমৃতলোকে। এই দুই অতি প্রিয় Iconic বাঙালি আর আমাদের মধ্যে নেই, কিন্তু তাঁদের মধ্যে বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত সংলাপ রয়ে গেল পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের কাছে।
সত্যজিৎ রায় পরিষ্কার ভাবেই বলেছিলেন, ফিল্ম করার জন্য যে নিখুঁত পর্যবেক্ষণ প্রয়োজন,সেটা সব সাহিত্য কর্মে থাকেনা । যাঁদের লেখায় সেটা থাকে, তাঁদের গল্প বা উপন্যাস থেকে ছবি করতে সুবিধা হয় । উনি এটাতো বলেননি যে,এই পর্যবেক্ষণ না থাকলে সেটা সাহিত্য নয় ! এক মাধ্যম থেকে আর এক মাধ্যমে যাওয়া মানে কপি করা নয়,সেটা মহান স্রষ্টা এবং সৃষ্টির Transcreation হয়, script ও literal translation হয়না। সুতরাং বুদ্ধদেব গুহর এতো উষ্মার কারণটা বুঝলাম না। উনি নিজেই তো জঙ্গলের যে অসাধারণ বর্ণনা লিখে গেছেন,তা ওনার প্রকৃতিকে গভীর ভালোবাসা,জ্ঞান এবং পর্যবেক্ষণের ফল !! তাছাড়া সত্যজিৎ রায়ের ব্যক্তিগত চিঠি বইয়ে ব্যবহার করাও বোধহয় ঠিক হয়নি। ঠিকই,এই দুই মহান ব্যক্তিত্বের চিন্তার জগতে তরঙ্গদৈর্ঘ্যের তফাৎ ছিল। কিন্তু এই illuminating বিতর্কে আলোকিত হলাম আমরা।।

I am an avid watcher of Ray films and consider him to be the greatest cinematic genius ever..However, vis a vis the debate between the cinematic genius and the literary genius I must say Mr.Buddhadeb Guha is right on the money with his analysis that novelists are not obligated to make their works rich in cinematic value and may or may not capture every minute detail, depending upon the theme of the novel. A true raconteur will always ensure that the the flow of the story does not get disrupted in his quest for meticulous detailing.. Having said that one has to agree with Ray that some of the novelists of the yore like the great Bibhutibhashan Bandopadhyay had a great penchant for detailing which never acted as a deterrent in the path of story telling. On the contrary, it made his novels all the more engrossing, which is quite evident in Pather Panchali. But ofcourse it is completely at the novelist's discretion as Buddhababu pointed out.
Before I conclude I would like to wish Buddhababu who is battling against the deadly virus currently a very speedy recovery and sign off with that wonderful line of his" A novelist's pen is not the lens of a camera".Well said sir..

I am a ray fan ..but couldn't support his logic here. Buddhadev Guha's comment has merit and logic. The way Ray family filed case for publishing those letters that really shows an autocratic mentality. Roy and Guha both belong to different niche but the way Roy has interpreted literature here from the angle of films really can't be justified. সাহিত্য সিনেমার প্রতি দায়বদ্ধ নয় মোটেই।" A novelist's pen is not camera's lens " ..what an amazing argument from Guha

I personally see merit in Roy's approach! Detailing is not for any other purpose but to be truthful to the plot of the story! A writer is free for "....Apon Moner Madhuri Mishaye..." but the surroundings should be realistic and that needs research and certainly hard work! Refer, historical novels of Sharadendu Bondyopadhyay.
I presume that's the pain point for most of the average writers which Mr Guha understood and being a Bengali shovinistic, reacted 😆

Very authentic video. I am aware of these facts when "chan ghore gaan" was published. This fact came into news papers. Later on I read that book but there Satyajit Ray letter was not there.

আমার শৈশবে এই বিতর্কের কথা শুনি। বাড়ির আড্ডা তোলপাড় হত এ নিয়ে। তখন থেকেই এ বিষয়ে আগ্রহী হয়ে পড়াশোনা শুরু করেছিলাম। বলতে বাধ্য হচ্ছি, ভুল বোঝার প্রথম পদক্ষেপ বুদ্ধদেব গুহর তরফ থেকে। সত্যজিৎ রায় সেদিনের বক্তৃতায় সাহিত্য নিয়ে কথা বলেননি। বলেছিলেন সাহিত্য ও চলচ্চিত্রের পারস্পরিকতা নিয়ে। দুটি ভিন্ন মাধ্যম। দুটোই গল্প বলে। সাহিত্য আগে এসেছে। তাই, সাহিত্যকে চলচ্চিত্রে তুলে ধরার প্রয়াস চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাণের শুরু থেকেই। এখন, কোন সাহিত্য চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাণের উপযুক্ত? এখানেই ফোকাস করেছিলেন সত্যজিৎ রায়। যে সাহিত্য 'কংক্রিট অবজ়ার্ভেশন'-কে বেশি গুরুত্ব দেয় সেটা চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাণের অধিকতর সহায়ক। তেমন সাহিত্য বর্তমানে (সেদিনের প্রেক্ষিতে) সংখ্যায় কম। এটাই ছিল সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বক্তব্য। তিনি কোথাও বলেননি কংক্রিট অবজ়ার্ভেশন ছাড়া সাহিত্য হয় না, বা বিমূর্ত বর্ণনার সাহিত্যমূল্য কম, বা সাহিত্যিক চলচ্চিত্রকারের মনোমত সাহিত্য রচনা না করলে সেটা ভাল সাহিত্য হবে না।
বুদ্ধদেব গুহ এমন ভাবে চিঠিটি লিখলেন যেন সত্যজিৎ তাঁর বক্তৃতায় সাহিত্যের ভুলভাল বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন। এটা সত্যজিৎ রায় আদৌ করেননি।
পরবর্তী চিঠিতে সত্যজিৎ সেটি পরিস্ফুটও করেন।
যাইহোক, খ্যাতনামাদের মধ্যে এমন দ্বিমত বিরল নয়। দুজনেই নিজের নিজের সৃষ্টির জন্য আমাদের প্রিয় হয়ে থাকবেন।

I had heard in the early 1990s - after Satyajit Ray's death - that Sandip Ray had started a court case against Buddhadev Guha for using a personal letter in one of his publications but didn't come to know the real reason behind it (I was not in India at that time). Just today, after almost thirty years, I have come to know what actually took place - together with the background information - from your video.

মনগ্রাহী শব্দচয়ণ ও পরিমিত ভাষার নির্মাণ আপনার । সমস্যা এই যে সাহিত্য বা চলচিত্র - কোথাও গুনবত্তা পরিমাপের জন্য কোন স্কেল নেই। চাঁদ বড় না সূর্য্য বড় , বিজ্ঞানীরা এক লহমার মধ্যে উত্তর দিতে পারেন। কিন্তু কোন সাহিত্যকৃতি বা চলচিত্ৰকৃতিকে এরকম কোন মানদন্ড দিয়ে পরিমাপ করা অসম্ভব। সত্যজিৎ সম্ভবত বলতে চেয়েছিলেন সাহিত্য থেকে চলচিত্রে রুপান্তরের সমস্যার কথা। সেখানে আরো কিছু এগিয়ে কোন সাহিত্য বা সাহিত্যিকের সাহিত্যকর্মের বস্তুভিত্তিক পরিমাপ করতে গিয়েছিলেন। এইখানে সাহিত্যিকের আপত্তি ছিল। তবে এসব বিতর্কের উত্তর আগেই দেওয়া হয়ে গিয়েছে - তার চেয়ে তুমি নিজেই লেখা নাকো কেন একটি কবিতা। স্বস্তির বিষয় এঁরা দুজনেই 'একটি কবিতা' লিখেছিলেন। আমাদের মত নয় - যারা কিছুই না করে শুধু সমালোচনা করে।

There was nothing wrong if 2 people disagree and have different view on any subject. ..but clearly Buddhadeb Guha crossed the line when he included Ray's letter in the book which Ray clearly wished to be one to one. ...especially when Ray was no more and in no way his consent could not be obtained.

He might have pointed out why many modern novels are not film worthy but he didn't criticize them as worthy works of literature. These are two completely different things. Failure to understand him is at the root of the controversy.

Both of them are acclaimed artists but of different forms. One is mainly a novelist and the other one is a film maker. I think Buddhadeb Guha's remarks have merits. On the other hand SR made an untoward attack by saying 'we have a different wave length'. That was un called for from a person of world repute.

Satyajit Ray is a man of classical nature who owned a capability of indifferent observation whereas Mr Budhdev Babu a commercial and egoist nature of celebrity so it is meaningless to bring them two in comparison under a same height of basement.

Besides legality, as a common man I find the observations of Satyajit Roy, completely personal opinion from a particular perspective (film making) and I fully endorse it! On the contrary Mr Guha's attitude was completely illogical, protectionist, partisan and unwanted, to say the least! It's a typical local Bengali attitude which lacks wholistic view!!

i respect satyajit roy.
Roy was a very talented person and of rare qualities. Although he was known more as a film maker than a novelist, his analysis here were more to the point and brilliant. In contrast, though Guha too is very talented, intellectual and more importantly an established novelist, he appeared to have lost focus. Inclusion of Roy's letter in his book did hint a touch of commercial interest. My opinion.

The case went in favour of the legal heirs of SATYAJIT RAY....& it is well settled law that a LETTER WRITTEN BY A LUMINARY to whomever it may be belongs to the writer.....these two families were really very close.....so close ... ray (at first very reluctant but eventually) wrote a few lines in RITU GUHA 'S LP COVER.....Buddhadeb babu was instigated by some authors of that tim to write against Ray

বাংলা ভাষায় লেখা পড়া করা ও কথা বলা তো আর ১৫ বছর পর থাকবে না । আমরা আধা হিন্দিভাষী হয়ে আছি ১৫ বছর পর পুরো পাল্টে গিয়ে হিন্দিভাষী হয়ে অনুভব করবো আমাদের আগের প্রজন্ম কত বিখ্যাত ছিল ।
তা হতে পারে। বাংলা ভাষা, সংস্কৃতি হয়ত মাটির তলায় চলে যেতেই পারে। একদিন হয়ত আবার কেউ মাটি খুঁড়ে সেই ভুলে যাওয়া ভাষা, সংস্কৃতিকে টেনে বার করবে, আমি নিশ্চিত। তবে আপনি যে আশঙ্কার কথা বলছেন, সেটা উড়িয়ে দেওয়া যায় না। ধন্যবাদ।
