In my limited experience with ZZ plants, overwatering is the death of my beautiful ZZs.... the rhizomes hold the water and nutrients. I rescued one of two plants and changed the soil to a mix of perlite and compost. This was a great way to finally get new stems. I don't water it at all unless the stems are looking shrivelled. It is now a very happy plant
Put your propagagations in water, stem and leaf then place in the brightest light you have in your home. Same for the actual plants. Which you just covered. Lol mine get light from a south facing window in southern Arizona and they grow like weeds, i had to separate my Chameleon because it out grew its pot and was no longer taking up water. I was shocked by how fast it grows. The first week i had 9 new shoots on both the Raven and Chameleon I had just bought. I have also taken stem cuttings and rooted them inside of 3 months, i placed them in water under a grow light. Those are now in soil and doing well in an eas window getting direct morning sun. The best way i can describe my lighting situation is FLF bright for 10+ hours per day.
I have a raven zz. That plant is so slow growing but it absolutely love Summer morning sun. Such a show stopper when those bright green leaves start emerging.

It is interesting the different care instructions. One of my ZZs came with instructions “Keep soil moist but do not let the plant stand in water or let the soil dry”. I leave mine in an eastern facing window in summer and the stems really thicken up, so I believe the do like some sunlight. On average I will get a minimum of 6 new stems each spring. This past summer I had 11 on the Raven.

For the longest time I didn’t like ZZ plants. Then I purchased a Raven which did absolutely nothing for two whole years. Now I own several varieties of them, growing one in Lechuza pon (I was curious how it would do and it’s loving it). Early in the summer, I got a chameleon ZZ and it’s beautiful- but not growing much.

I repotted my Raven ZZ into 3 pots, I used well draining soil like what you have, but I made a mistake. I watered it before I repotted and watered it again after. I did leave some rizome above the soil line and saw that some roots got mushy. I was afraid it would get root rot. I put it under my ceiling fan for 2 nights and I used my skewer (that's my poking tool 😊) to loosen up the soil. It finally dried out after about 4 days. I even took the worse pot and took it completely out of the pot and left it under the fan for the night. They seem to be doing great now. Whew.... this is a great plant. Cool to see your repot!
That's actually a great point that we often forget only water the plant if it needs water after repotting it. Thanks for bringing us up

I love this video, but I will disagree about the propagation. I am water propagating 3 stems and I love watching the roots grow. It is the coolest thing ever! I don't mind waiting..it's worth it! 😌

This is the first time I've tried to propagate a ZZ plant, but I have done several jade plants from the leaves. I suppose I'm so used to waiting long periods of time for anything to happen, that it doesn't really bother me. I'll keep you posted! Have a great weekend! Love your content 😊🇨🇦
I habe heard that stems propagate a little faster than the single leaves. I wish i had known this before i separated the stem i received into the single leaves... In the meantime i bought a big one! 😁 But now after a year they have begun to sprout! 💪🏻 Now i can enjoy the big plant an the experiment at the same time! 😊
Mine was looking pretty scrawny last year, I put it outside not knowing what would happen and I just brought it back inside looking like it was on steroids! LOL! It's definitely summering outdoors from now on!

Love the way you just get straight into the pots, pull all the soil off and inspect the roots. It really does inspire confidence, and shows that so many plants are really quite robust and can tolerate this method of repotting. As someone who is still 'sitting on the fence' regarding whether I like ZZs, I found the finished result spectacular!

Your ZZ propagation video is actually how I first started following you! I got some ZZ cuttings from my local plant shop over the summer, and they FINALLY have roots. However I have heard of the props drying out and dying back once they get potted, so mine have turned into forever props aka semi-hydro 😅

I just bought a zenzi today!
I was forced to prune my Zamioculcas after a gravity accident. It took EIGHT MONTHS for the stem to develop roots and potato-like rhizomes. I cut off the remaining stump from the mother plant. I agree that it’d never propagate.
As for caring, I water my ZZ plants 2-3 times a month, none of them have ever had a single yellow leaf. They grow snugged tightly in perlite/bark/universal soil/sand mix (more or less 1:1:1:1) in shadowy spots. They seem to be contented, always forgiving and very undemanding 💚.

It was very hard to take it from the old pot.

Mine's in a terracotta pot with an aroid mix of coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal, and worm castings.
I found that it can go about a month without water here in CT. If I wait any longer than that, the smaller growths start to have yellow leaves.
I also top dressed with lava rock to prevent fungus gnats.
What an informative video - thank you! I tried growing a few cuttings like you did and had the same result: teeny tiny growth after several years. Repotting in better soil with better light and combining several pots does wonders and looks so much better.

I was debating whether to add my Raven ZZ together with my green ZZ as both have taken a beating from my new kittens, 😂. This encouraged me to take the plunge. I "rescued" one from home depot 2 winters ago. It was waterlogged and sitting out in the cold. Thought I was helping it. Everything died except for one tiny bulb. Two years later, it has two tiny leaves. At this rate, it'll take 100 years to grow to grow into anything. 🙄
Maybe not 100 years but probably 10. I received a huge ZZ from a neighbor who was moving in the winter and didn't want to put the plant in the cold moving truck. It had about 2 dozen stalks and I decided to propagate a few, as well as some leaves, just for the experience. It took 5 or six months to get any bulblets on the leaves and then about 3 years before the plants started growing even slightly. An interesting experiment that I will never waste my time with again!
This is one thing that I've learned from doing these experiments is that this plant takes incredibly long to propagate and get new growth. Always see videos on how easy it is to propagate but they never tell you how long it actually takes to get new growth. I will never propagate easy plant again unless a branch breaks off and I don't want to throw it out
You probably need more humidity and light. I propagated mine from just single leaves last year and I already have shoots about 8 inches high with more leaves .

I agree they need water like snake plants. I repotted my huge zz and all the roots were completely dry. Although the rhizomes were plump not sure if it’ll survived
I just purchased a Raven ZZ plant. It's in a self watering pot. I have two more regular ZZ plants. I repoted one. I bought another one because I thought that the first one was dying. Both are doing well. This is a plant they say thrives on neglect.
Neglect to an extent....it is forgiving is you forget to water for a very long time. I have been guilty of this lol
When I repotted my ZZ I had two rhizomes that had no petioles but lots of massive roots. I potted them up and now I have a new plant forming

Wow I have the exact problem with one of mine yellow leaves
Got mine in perlite heavy bonsai soil. It in SUPER low light, so very leggy. But give it new light and the rhizome shoots out new petioles every now and then. House plants don't grow ideally in the house, but that's okay if you learn your plants' needs.
Plants aren't meant to be in a house but as long as you can somewhat replicate their natural conditions then they do well
The Raven pot looks great, the other is a mess & just needed a bit more care to pot it.

I have also been confused by information. Plants originate from SE Africa (subtropical) and thrive in extremes. An intense wet/rainy/humid season of approx 3 months followed by dry/cold season of up to 6 months. Very similar to Snake plants, they will survive low light, low water but will thrive with water and good light. Depending on the pot, watering interval can be from 2 weeks to 2 months.
ZZs need to be rotated outside if you have temperature controlled environment. Maintaining extreme conditions is important otherwise the plant will go dormant. The extreme hot/cold /day /night temperatures outside keep the plant upright. When snake and ZZ plants are kept indoors in air conditioning for long periods, they will flop. Put ZZs and snake plants outside in spring after long dry spell and you will be rewarded.

I have read that also to progate a ZZ leaf is to cut it in half, horizontally, want these in water. I put water in a shallow bowl and cover with saran wrap. Insert the cut leaves into the saran so it reaches the water top.

All of the myths that you have busted about ZZ plants also applies to most sansevaria, and combining them makes for a beautiful container! I have my raven zz mixed with my bantles sensation Sans. Fun fact everything above the soil Is the petiole with one compound leaf w many leaflets. The " potato "is the stem.

That was one of the most surprising things about this easy plant is what we normally call the stem is actually the leaf petiole and yes....the potato below the soil is the stem. That is so crazy! And you are correct about snake plants as well.... So much misinformation lol

leaves grow roots,cutted stems grow a "potatoe like" at the bottom and will grow a new plant. Mine took only 4 month.
Cut 3 long stems off my green zz and put them in my planter wall sconce for about a year. Loved the architectural decorative vibe . Finally rooted so potted them up with the zz they came from because it was root bound and needed a repot. Now what cutting to put in my wall sconce?...
Have they gotten any NEW growth since they have had roots?

Took me 7 months to grow a 4-5" ZZ plant from a single leaf. There are 4 leaves on it and each one is 1" or slightly larger, much bigger than yours. My older plant gets light green-yellow leaves on the new growth, especially when sitting in full sun.

I think your props taking forever to grow has a lot to do with them being indoors, and possibly a little with where you live. I'm pretty far off near Houston, TX and have several ZZs both indoors and outside as well as some leaf props I put in soil earlier this year. The indoor ZZs definitely grow much slower than the outdoor ones, I think I got one or two new stems this year. But the outdoor plants have sent up several new stems and the leaf props have all gone from a single leaf with a little root ball forming to having one or two stem shoots each just over the summer. We had an extremely hot and dry summer this year and the outdoor ZZs get probably 5-10x the amount of water as my indoor ZZs. I do find that my snake plants all have extremely similar growth habits to my ZZs, with much faster growth being outside vs. the inside plants. My in-laws also have many ZZs outside and inside the house and their outside plants also send out much more new growth than the indoors ones. I know you have your plants really well lit with good grow lights, but I think at the end of the day being able to be outside in an environment similar to their natural one does wonders for their growth.

Wow, i wanted to prop some leaves, im too old to wait two years to get a tiny amount of growth!
Same, did it once as an experiment. It worked...got 5 out of 10 leaves to root and them basically nothing happened for about 3 years. It's fun to do just for the experience and to test your patience, but not a method of propagation.
It's an interesting process but if you don't have patience..... Then don't do it lol
I propagated mine in a vase from several 18” petioles. It did take nearly a year to see new growth from the tubers that formed, but during that time I had a plant.
Once the tubers’ sent up new leaves, I potted them up and had a second plant to give away.

my zz's stems are growing quite long and bending over, i don't have that beautiful straight growth you do. Any tips for that? or is combining my only hope? PS. Just took a close look at my 16 year old zz. It's shooting up a brand new stem, which i've never seen before. It's only about 3 inches high- talk about slow growth. but i'm happy about this...
I watched some of the videos you mentioned underwater the plants have wrinkles on them but after you water them and you’re taking good care of the plants while those wrinkles do they back to normal like disappear?🤔

How are you doing today?
I bought a zz plant in a little 4” nursery pot in 2018. It’s one of the few plants that does well in my apartment and it has grown like weed. It’s on its 4th pot and must be at least 3 feet tall now. I cannot get a bigger pot than the one it’s in now. I just don’t have the space! And when I put it in that pot two years ago the roots were already out of control. I’m afraid it might be root bound again. Can I just trim the roots (the “fingers” not the tubers) to keep it in the same pot? And can I do this in November in northern New Jersey? I only have windows on one side of my apartment that face west, so at this time of year it’s only getting about 2 hours of really bright indirect light. Should I wait until spring?
I prune at all times of the year with no issues...so I'll say it should be okay haha If you are ever concerned about the light you can always supplement it with a grow light

Gee this is news to me. Everything i have ever heard is that they dont want lots of water. I will try to water more now.
Make sure they have the other correct conditions, especially light. Make sure they have a nice bright spot, but always remember to slowly acclimate them to highlight. The more light they get the more water in nutrients they will use
I never water mine between October and April. They evolved in a tropical forest with seasonal dry weather, so they can rot easily if the soil is too compact or they are root bound, which they actually prefer.
When I water and fertilize (mildly) in the Spring, the wrinkled petioles plump up and new sprouts grow rapidly.
The 4” potted plant I bought five years ago is now in a 12” pot with petioles exceeding 2’.
I’ll have to divide it next Spring.

@@Unpotted any plants receiving natural sunlight through winter months should always be watered less as they are receiving less light. Both go hand in hand.... Mine are primarily under grow lights receiving consistent light but I tend to underwater mine. No that they are in. I hope a better draining soil. I'm going to water mine a bit more frequently.

@@EverythingPlants My ZZ doesn’t spend the Winter in much light at all, as it is generally overcast where I live and it would be detrimental to the plant to be scorched by the occasional sunny day next to a window. (I only use supplemental light for cactus and succulents.)
During Summer it lives on an East-facing covered porch, where it only receives dappled morning sun, just as it would in a tropical forest.
Everyone’s home environment is different. I realize my comment looks like advice and I apologize. I really only intended to provide some knowledge as to the ZZ’s natural environment and my own personal experiences. I had several suffer from Winter root rot before I learned my own method, which is how I discovered that the compound leaf will root and form new tubers in water. Funny how water both kills and renews the same plant, but then water doesn’t have the same fungi as potting mixes do.
Trial and error is always going to be a better teacher than any cultivation advice, eh?

The proper answer is horticultural sand...but I used quickrete play sand haha
My raven got overwatered, I cut off the soft petioles leaving 2 inches of stem. A new plant stem grew out of the old one

Well ... My zz has been watered now... I think a lot of plant ppl easily get stuck on what the care tags say she in turn what ppls pretty websites say when in reality we should be looking at how the plant grows in the wild. With the ZZ it's easy to just blindly trust the pretty websites BC you don't get any fuss from the plant too often and often when you do you just think old leaves do yellow and fall so it's normal... Yet with other plants like monstera and other climbers and crawlers ppl look at how they grow in the wild and try to replicate it with poles or planks. The ZZ got forgotten....
Ive read most of the article, so far I haven't seen anything about zenzi, would you combine the two in the same pot? My ZZ only has 4 stems from 3 rhizomes and one is on its way out, my zenzi is obviously shorter but I think they would look cute together so the bottom has more fullness. Would love your thoughts since you've been doing the ZZ deep dive! Thanks Jeff!
I actually bought 2 small pots of zenzi today!!! To fill the area where the chameleon was lol I thought about adding them into the pot before I made this video, but I decided against it for one reason. The regular ZZ can get HUGE (like the one 3 foot leaf in the video) and I think over time it will shadow the zenzi from limited light. Ill keep mine in their own cute pot for now.

I recently purchased a fairly large ZZ.
Afterwards I YT and read that they are toxic for animals.
I have 2 18 months old terrorist female cats and almost gave the plant away.
The morning after i repotted it and moved it into my house there were broken branches, leaves and potting soil from one end of the house to the other.
So much for toxic.
They have killed every plant in my house.
I bought some rolling pot holders and plan to roll it into my front bathroom when I leave home.
Right now I have a 3 sided Christmas fireplace screen around it.
Please help! Should I give up and gift it?
Most plants have a range of toxicity. I'd be very concerned if they were eating any portion of the plant. I'd speak with your veterinarian to more specifics.
put tinfoil around the top of pot and bend it over to the stems....o also use huge clear thin plastic bags over the whole top of the plant like a greenhouse covering...you can cut the corners off for air circulation...

I'm sorry hun, but that pot is way too small for all of those stems. Also, you don't want to pack the soil down onto the root. When you do that, it removes air pockets. Once you start top watering, the soil will pack down even more over time.
It has a lot of room to grow down into the new soil. The new soil is much more chunky so when I pack it down it still remains loose....not like heavy peat based soils, but we'll see how it goes lol
