- High powered front wheel drive street cars are certainly not something we come across too often in Australia. We first spotted Alex’s Mazda 3 MPS back in 2013 at the Calder Park drags where the car ran a very respectable 12.8 second pass at 114 miles per hour. At the time the car has some basic bolt ons and made around 220kW to the front wheels.
Fast forward to today and Alex has just given the MPS a complete overhaul of the car. Primarily setup for circuit track days, Alex is keen on giving the quarter another crack so we popped down to Quickbitz to check it out on their new Dynotech hub dyno.
Engine wise the factory 2.3L turbocharged 4 cylinder now features a forged bottom end. The cylinder head has received a comprehensive work over but stock cams remain in place. Boost comes from a Garrett GTX3076 turbocharger alongside a Haltech Elite computer and E85 fuel system. Let’s see how it goes!

used to see this thing at hwy and dandy bypass all the time, its an absolute beast
ultimate sleeper ...
The first time I saw such a dyno
That thing would be fun!
hands up who likes torque steer?!
+SimplyCRehZ ha ha ha, love it!
Having all three engine mounts greatly helps this. My Speed 3 is ~385/380 @ the wheels (fully bolted/ethanol mix tuned/upgraded turbo) and is a BLAST to drive. These things frequently dominate a tracking events too, when properly setup.
I like it... it lets you know and feel where the car is and where it's going... and you know a workout aswell
I would like to, but it tore off my arm.
Why do people constantly talk about torque steer when high powered AWD cars on soft wide wall tires to get the best traction actually jump sideways when launched hard, yet you complain about some torque steer? Advice don't let go of the wheel you moron.
Wow.. nice beast
very nice
damn! That open dump wastegate!
Would be such a nice car to drive! :)
Its got welded rear suspension. I can assure you it is not.
nice!
+Fullboost
The question is, what turbine housing is used? OEM, T3/4, V-band? And what flange is it towards DP?
nice
sooooo uhhh what do you do with 400kw at the front wheels apart from drive straight off the track at the first corner
What fuel system are you using ? Are you running extra injectors on the inlet using the haltech or is there a upgraded injector that no1 wants to tell me about 😂 another question is how much will our liners take after being bored out???as I'm under the impression there pretty thin to begin with as is with most Ali sleeved blocks...or am I missing something ?
True wolf in sheeps clothing, nothing better than running past SRT-8's etc in my little red rascal MPS and have drivers wondering WTF....thats a MAZDA :-)LOL!!
MPS4LIFE...dont want a new one just my '08 Japanese Samurai
Simply WOW!! 400+ KW! ATW. What's the total cost of project?
will be an absolute point and shoot weapon on the circuit... hopefully they can limit boost on launch tho, lol
mines currently at 220kw right now , feels so good. just dynod last week, mods: Intake, 3inch exhaust, downpipe, step colder plugs, rmm, hpfp , front mount , egr delete
is yours just a gen1 mazda 3 ? 2L or 2.3?
@@hakaase gen1 06 mps 2.3
Also I just looked up EGR delete, how would you get away with that without failing emissions test?
@@bluesclue3667 are you the same guy as this comment? 😂
@@hakaase yeah same guy lol. you simply unplug the egr. That's the delete. It doesnt operate anymore. Whenever I need a WOF I could just plug it back in temporarily. Code is removed once u get tune or use your own accessport/OBD device.
Is the Haltech controlling only the port injectors? If so a full ecu swap for 530hp is super overkill. Can achieve the same with a split second controller and factory ecu. Also those stock cam shafts are definitely holding it back a bit up top. Also no reason why this set up can’t go to 600whp. Is the gtx a gen2?
Something about that hiss is just, Calming but dangerous
I see hub dynos as a better way for front wheel drives especially if u soin alot, thts how i see it
Cool car, but no need at all for the Haltech. Many, many big power Speeds (700+whp) are on stock ECU and using the AccessPORT or Versatuner tuning solutions. Being an owner/member of this platform's community, and having tuned them, I can tell you it's superfluous for that power level. I'm interesting why the owner went standalone and was okay with all of the compromises associated with doing so. Leaving a lot of power on the table sticking with only 3" exhaust too. I'm at 385/380 @ the wheels and 3" is perfect for my power level. At 500+, this car could definitely benefit from a custom 3.5" downpipe and exhaust, or at least a cutout post-downpipe.
Also, I hope this guy isn't running pure E85 in-tank. Extensive testing has proven that doing so will clog up the crankshaft driven fuel pump (the HPFP) with "black, sticky death," a known issue of running too strong a concentration of E85 in-tank on Speeds. Now a separate tank for the PI would do the trick. Alternatively, spraying a ton a water-methanol will get you great knock protection to advance timing, and provide the extra fueling.
As I understand it, all the Haltech does is drive the aux fuelling. Standard ECU does everything else.
Seems overkill to me. You can do it with a simple Split Second controller, or even step up to a Microsquirt.
Its FWD so to help with traction issues he has boost ramp up on every gear-change over 0.3-0.6seconds every gear. That way its not frying its tyres every time the clutch is thrown out. It throws out hard. Almost enough to shoot your knee into the steering wheel. Clutch is so heavy because of the power its making, so to combat lack of clutch control you need a computer capable of smartly controlling boost in almost any circumstance.
LOL if his clutch is that heavy, he needs a different clutch! I'm making more than him and my 6-puck isn't much heavier than factory.
A FUCKING DREAM.
what did you use for a front lip? that thing is sexy af
Is this on the stock harness?
damn
He running the Haltec for aux fuel?

2.3 or 2.5 which engine to use as a start if i want to do this. Lots of guys go for the 2.5 as its bigger cc but i wonder if the bore/stroke ratio on the 2.3 is a better starting point?
I have the 2.5 liter but I'm curious to know this as well.
Edit: just realize this comment was about a year old
@@chandlertilton2427 The 2.3 L3T has a forged steel crank and rods, the 2.5 does not have a forged steel crank or rods. The 2.5 is a good, responsive grocery getter, but it was never designed with outright performance in mind.
Do you know how much the upgrades on the car cost in total?
a lot
if it's a daily 500 whp is more than enough. Good luck getting traction in 1,2nd gear. Love my Gen1
このバンパー欲しいな。
what kind of pass did he do after the tune etc?
10.7
Could you do this with the 2nd gen skyactiv Mazda 3?
Any recent times on the car?
He holds the record for fastest Mazda 3 mps in aus which was done many years ago.
Is that just one gear?
I want 450 HP on my mazda 3 how much would it cost?
Around 15k give or take
U sell ur mazda 3 and get a mazdaspeed3 lmao u aint gonna ever make any power with a mazda3
kooky mazda isn’t this video using a Mazda 3? Not a speed 3?
@@kiiingedrian No, this is an Mazda 3 MPS which in America is the Speed 3.
Standard Mazda 3 is N/A
He has put a lot more than 15k into it, she is a beautiful car.
wat kind of transmission ?
Stock MS3 transmissions have been used to 600 wheel torque and beyond. 4th gear doesn't last very long at that power level but it's a stout trans nonetheless.
We're is the stutututututu
xXDivinityNovaXx no blowoff valve, just pure engine
It's not NA, it's turbo charged therefore it's not "pure engine". It has a wastegate instead of a blow off valve so no sound comes from it
price to get to 400hp
A few grand. If you know how to properly mod these cars and tune them with maybe E30 or so, 400whp is very easily reachable with a BNR S4, for instance. Stock injectors can only support ~370-380 whp, so most folks will be spraying water-methanol for that last little bit needed.
mines at 200 kw atw with just tune $ 300 and 2nd cat delete $ 140.
Morepore Better get upgraded HPFP internals ASAP. The first three mods on these cars should be FP internals, rear motor mount, and and AccessPORT. Stock HP fuel pump internals are DANGEROUSLY close to running out of fueling headroom, even with just a few more pounds of boost. Going lean at WOT (which WILL happen without internals as you turn up the wick) is a great recipe for zoom-zoom-boom. If you want a pro opinion, here you go:
stratifiedauto.com/blog/the-modification-path-in-a-mazdaspeed-vehicle/
Stratified has been in the Mazdaspeed game for over 10 years. They know the platform inside and out. I'd listen to them very carefully. They know what they're talking about.
HPFP was the 1st thing I did. Just got a k04/k06 hybrid turbo now as the stock k04 shit itself. And also a new TMIC fitted.
pretty sweet build and good power but in a fwd its stupid and pointless
everything is man… everything is… but that also means nothing is pointless and stupid at the same time
2.3 Mazda motor
Why do hubs dyno's exist? They seem like a dumb way to measure power.
+A Vong It's actually quite the opposite, you don't have factors like 'wheelspin
Fullboost Power is supposed to be measured at the wheel though isn't it? You don't drive around without them lol They say hub dyno's are more accurate because there's nothing interfering with the rotation like suspension, tyres, tie down tension, car weight, wheel weight etc. I know dyno's are only tuning tools but come on, nobody says I have x power at the hubs lol
+A Vong Actually, they're much easier to set up, take less space, cost less, and you don't have to deal with wheel spin. Yes, people generally get better numbers on hub, but they're really good tools for tuning, not just measuring power.
+A Vong power at the hubs is power at wheels lol. The transmission has already absorbed the power losses. Therefore hub dyno is almost exactly the same as a rolling road. There is no more parts to lose power from due to energy loss through transmission. It's exactly the same.
+A Vong people who have it measured on a hub dyno do! HAHAH
As said, it's just a more accurate way of doing it. There are a lot of shady operators of 'conventional' dynos who deliberately bias results high by not strapping down etc.
