NIETZSCHE: The Eternal Recurrence

  • The eternal recurrence is a central notion of Nietzsche’s thought. It supposes that you’d have to experience the same life, with the same events and same experiences, repeated for eternity.
    Nietzsche suggests that most people would consider this a curse and that it would require the most impassioned love of life: to crave nothing more fervently than this ultimate eternal confirmation and seal.
    The idea is horrifying and paralysing as it carries the burden of the “heaviest weight” imaginable. However, it is also the ultimate affirmation of life, it is the rock the fills the emptiness and weightlessness void of nihilism.

    Eternal Recurrence might be true, but I would imagine it being on a much larger scale than one life, more fitting to the concept of infinity. Therefore it would rather be countless and countless lives as reincarnations to every possible form imaginable, with spiritual worlds between the reincarnations, and after eons and eons, when all else has been experienced, one would return to the same life he's living now. Actually, even if that were the case, I don't see why life should be exactly the same as before. First, you would have to experience all other possible variations to your current life. In this way it would certainly take so long to get back into the exact same life, it could as well be said never since it would take exactly the amount of time eternity takes.

    Is the eternal recurrence really just knowing that this life is finite? It will be stored in the Akashic like a book to be picked up every once in a while, unchangeable, but able to be experienced again. However, our consciousness continues to expand to be & become other things. Those who are very attached to THIS experience of life (the ego) despair over the idea of having to transform into something else. They want THIS form to be final &...well, God.
    But...you can't be God without BECOMING GOD. (transforming)

  • @amanofnoreputation2164
    @amanofnoreputation2164 Před rokem +19

    The Eternal Recurrence is a concept hinted at in Zelda and finally instantiated explicitly in Breath of The Wild. Whether or not it truly reflects the nature of the universe, it does reflect the nature of the human mind; that it can only go in any given direction so far before snapping back into the center.
    Thus the mandala, conceived of as an ontological compass has a hidden identity with the uroboros. The Eternal Recurrence orients us towards life, whereas the idea of progression, though necessary, leads to separation and denial of life.
    The latter can only ever be an illusion, but without it there is no consciousness.

    I thought a lot about Nietzsche’s assertion how he would have chosen to live his life again the same way as he has, or will have lived from his perspective at the time of writing. I think by writing it he suggests the readers should feel the same way. I think EVEN IF it were an option to any of us, it would be a hell and torture to live the same life again. Especially if you consider all the suffering and tragedies we see in lives of others as well as in our own.
    The Buddhist view that it is best to never be alive again to suffer is a better choice.

    Great stuff! I've been wanting to do a bit of a Nietzsche pilgrimage for years to the Engadine and to the rock there where he first came up with the eternal recurrence (or rather where it came to him) I had never thought of Nietzsche as a metaphysician because of all the noise he makes about Plato and Christianity but of course it makes perfect sense with the eternal recurrence and will to power. They have always struck me as odd as to what exactly his belief was with them and what his attitude was-thought experiment or deep belief

    • @Eternalised
      @Eternalised  Před 3 lety +6

      Thanks! That place is beautiful. Really good point - thought experiment or deep belief. Nietzsche was one of those thinkers who lived what he thought.
      In some of his posthumous notes he says:
      "One must want to experience the great problems with one's body and one's soul"
      In other words, the dichotomy between thinking and feeling, intellect and passion, has disappeared. He feels his thoughts. He can fall in love with an idea. An idea can make him ill.

    I think that the concept of eternal reccurance might be misunderstood. I don't really believe that Nietzsche meant that he would born again and come through the exact same path. It is his eternal will that would rather reoccur again.
    According to Alan Watts every human being carries nature in itself, thus there are no individuals but only dufferent types of will that those individuals carry. For me Jesus, Buddha, Nietzsche and me are all the same. Our lifes go on differently, but we all have something in common, we carry some sort of an eternal will(basically spirit) that makes us suffer and research the truth. Thus, I am Nietzsche. This is how Nietzsche infinitely reborns.

    The way to actually reconciliate the idea of becoming and being from Heraclitus and Parmenides (and the way I suspect Nietzsche thought about it) is to recognize how they both true depending on the perspective. Parmenides argued that all that existed was a reorganization of the same 'particles,, nothing really changed. If were to change it had to come from nothing, because if it came from something that already existed, it was going to be made from the same 'particles'. But isn't this same reorganization of particles the change that Heraclitus was talking about? The difference is in perspective. Where Parmenides sees the same things just ordered differently, Heraclitus sees an infinite parade of configurations being spawned at each moment. The tension of opposites is resolved. This to me is more likely to be Nietzsche's perspective than the idea of the repetiveness of the motion of washing in the river

    I kinda wish Nietzsche was still around so he could receive a better explanation of what evolutionary principles are. "Fitness" is relative to the environment, and it's not the most important aspect, reproduction is. It doesn't matter how strong and high up on the ladder you are, if you don't reproduce, your attributes don't go on. For some reason he seems to think it conflicts with his own assessments, but they don't, and I think it's because he's misunderstood evolution's fundamental driving forces and lack of ultimate goal. You can still pursue will to power independently of genetic drift. In fact, one could say genes have their own will to power, as even genes one might consider "unfit" can become dominant in the gene pool under certain circumstances, but it is a mindless brute forcing of semi randomized attributes that is foundational to life on earth either way.

I believe Nietzsche’s Eternal Reoccurrence is a great philosophical idea, but it can definitely be improved.

  • @euclidofalexandria3786

    Eternal recurrence, means that the humans will all spawn again, but in unknowing... there will be interesting similarities, of those who look the same, with the same part or full name, doing the same jobs, every recurrence, the significance of these recurrences I cannot say, but I am sure they will happen....

      I've always been a thinker. Being raised Christian, I began to think in these kind of ways because I was unsatisfied with my result of modeling after its archetype with conviction. I studied and lived by the idea that self sacrifice has it rewards, to act with a divine sense of self and punish the ego (which its followers aren't really the best at, lotta hypocrisy and superiority complexes). I remember in 1st grade I picked up a Quran and was fascinated that it read that people where made out of clay rather than dust. Big No No for my parents. Come 2020 Not having read any critiques of Christianity prior, I had a series of panic attacks and hospitalizations 2 years ago because I felt I had betrayed the god I was raised to believe and trying so hard to model after (I've always been a thinker). If Christianity taught me anything its how to stay positive. Try not freak out; because I can say breaking out of "cultural phycosis" can be Hell and fuck it was, especially when most people you know will demonize you for it. If you have to live this life again, live it in such a way that you wouldn't mind doing it again.

      i get pretty anxious abt all this stuff too but the only way to curb stomp anxiety is knowledge. these philosophical ideas are pretty much just info hazards/thought experiments. learning abt our current reality (our bodies, earth/ecological stuff, etc) might bring you some comfort + don’t think too hard abt ‘what comes after’. death is not even something you can experience (dying sort of is ? but you won’t even be able to remember it lol). death is prolly akin to before you were born. so don’t worry + keeping plants may help you become accustomed to the idea of death. even stars die :) dw ! we’ll all just be pretty cosmo dust eventually .. imagine it. you’ll materialize into something beautiful 🌌
