  • Leaving her parent's house and landing in Nairobi with only a green Pill paper bag in the early 2000s, Purity Wambui had only one goal: To get employed as a housegirl.20 years later, she is an employer running a thriving Mitumba business with not only a car to drive but a place where her children call home.
Purity describes herself as having a degree in "Mitumbalogy" a word she coined from the art of selling second-hand clothes." Dealing in the mitumba business is not as easy as it sounds. There are days you will count losses and others you will get profits. It is a whole learning process," she says.
Having worked as a housegirl in Kileleshwa for about six months, Purity moved to the Mitumba business at Gikombaa where she started off with selling clothes piece by piece. During this time she got to learn how the business works and quickly rose to sell bails. As fate would have it, the business was hit hard by a lack of goods being imported from abroad leaving her with no option but to move to Sudan where she hawked and learned to speak Arabic.
With the spirit and will to make it in life she came back to Gikombaa when the business picked up and this time, she gave it her all and to her disbelief, she earned her first million from the mitumba business. Right when business was going well in June 2015, a fire broke out in Gikombaa reducing her business to ashes with goods worth 3.2M leaving her with only KSh.300 at hand and KSh.4000 in her account.
Left with nothing to hold on to, she started her business from scratch, and just like a Phoenix, she rose again with the help of a helper whom she refers to as a destiny shaper. From being a millionaire she now had to depend on those around her to give her a duty of selling on their behalf.
With her resilience and hard work, Purity was able to save up enough to buy land and build a home months after the fire reduced her business to Zero.
