  • Welcome to my homestead in the suburbs,
    Today let's make this magnificent magnesium lotion.
    Why magnesium lotion? "The evidence in the literature suggests that subclinical magnesium deficiency is rampant and one of the leading causes of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and early mortality around the globe, and should be considered a public health crisis" (PMID: 29387426).
    Some signs of magnesium deficiency are insomnia, depression, anxiety, muscle cramps, restless leg syndrome, hypertension, asthma, diabetes, insulin resistance, constipation, headaches, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and more.
    Nutrients usually act in a coordinated manner in the body. Intestinal absorption and subsequent metabolism of a particular nutrient, to a certain extent, is dependent on the availability of other nutrients. Magnesium and vitamin D are 2 essential nutrients that are necessary for the physiologic functions of various organs. Magnesium assists in the activation of vitamin D, which helps regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis to influence the growth and maintenance of bones. All of the enzymes that metabolize vitamin D seem to require magnesium, which acts as a cofactor in the enzymatic reactions in the liver and kidneys. It is therefore essential to ensure that the recommended amount of magnesium is consumed to obtain the optimal benefits of vitamin D. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29480918)
    Very good information! And it helps me sleep so well!
    Let's do this!

    What’s the shelf life for this lotion? I am definitely going to try this because I bought a magnesium lotion but you just showed me how easy it is to make.

      I would say 3-6 months depending on heat and humidity of where you live.

    Also, bees wax does NOT work. I tried when I ran out of the emulsifying wax.

      @@ttschrock7126 my pleasure! I also add essential oils when I am blending at the end so oils are not heated

      I do this as well. I do add vitamin E and essential oils at the end. I cannot wait for it to be done. My magnesium oil is sitting right now, all dissolved, but allowing it to sit a few hours. Thanks again!!! So much!!@@thistaylormadelife

    Have you ever had this recipe separate after time, also why do you let the magnesium cool before you mix? Thank you ❤

      With bees wax it does, but I have not had that issue with the emulsifying wax. I let it cool so it blends better with the other ingredients and is not runny when I put it in the jars.

    How did this turn out for you? Would you make any changes? I am going to make some tomorrow. My magnesium lotion just seperated. So not sure what I did wrong. It was a different recipe. Thanks!!

      Here is the recipe I use
      * 3/4 cup hot water
      * 2 Tbsp. magnesium chloride flakes
      * 2 1/2 Tbsp. Shea butter 1oz= 1T
      * 2 1/2 Tbsp castor oil
      * 5 Tbsp. emulsifying wax crucial for combining water and oil; beeswax will not work.
      Instructions
      * Dissolve the magnesium chloride flakes in the hot water.
      * Meanwhile, warm the Shea butter, castor oil and emulsifying wax over low heat in a small saucepan.
      * Once the magnesium flakes are dissolved and the emulsifying wax is melted and combined with the oil, add the water/magnesium mixture to the oil and give it a whisk.
      * Add essential oils and whisk once more.
      * Store in an air-tight container and rub on 1/4-1/2 tsp. at a time before bedtime.

      The emulsion is key, that is when it goes from a liquid to a creamy lotion. From clear to white. I use a stick/emulsion/immersion blender and it works great!
