Georgia Accuses US Of "Visa Blackmail" After Blinken Announces Sanctions Over "Russian Bill"

  • The United States will implement visa restrictions and review ties with Georgia over a controversial "foreign agents bill" that has ignited widespread protests. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the visa restrictions would apply to Georgian politicians and officials behind the bill, criticizing the legislation for stifling freedoms of association and expression. Blinken emphasized the US's longstanding support for Georgia's democracy and warned that undermining democratic processes or institutions could render individuals ineligible for US visas.
The ruling Georgian Dream party, which passed the bill requiring NGOs and media with over 20% foreign funding to register as "foreign agents," accused the US of "visa blackmail" and encroaching on Georgia's sovereignty. Critics likened the law to Russian measures used to suppress dissent, while supporters, including Georgian PM Irakli Kobakhidze, argued it promotes transparency and safeguards sovereignty. The legislation has sparked mass protests in Tbilisi, met with tear gas, water cannons, and arrests by riot police.
Blinken urged Georgia to reconsider the law, warning it could harm its EU and NATO aspirations. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen also cautioned that the legislation poses a serious obstacle to Georgia's European integration. Amid the tensions, Georgian PM Kobakhidze claimed an EU commissioner had hinted at an assassination threat over the law, a statement the EU's Oliver Varhelyi later clarified was taken out of context. Varhelyi expressed regret and emphasized the need to avoid further polarizing the situation.
The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the US of blackmailing Georgia, with spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemning US intervention in sovereign affairs. Georgia's parliament is set to launch proceedings to override a presidential veto on the controversial law next week.

It's the same law as in the US. You have to declare whose foreign country's money is supporting your NGO if it's more than 20% of your budgets. GEORGIANS working for any foreign NGO or other foreign organizations in Georgia have to register as FOREIGN AGENTS according to this new law. Being a foreign agent is not against the low, as is not in the US, if you are registered. It becomes a crime if you are not registered as a foreign agent. What we are talking here is about transparency. So why is this crowd against transparency if Georgia is a democracy? US and Russia, and all Western European countries, have the same laws, so why is it only a problem for Georgia and Russia and not for the US and Europe? I think every intelligent person would know.

How can a law passed in Georgia will be Russia law ? US HAS SIMILAR LAW does US one also Russia law? In my opinion the law is to prevent outside interference in Georgia politics. Those who interfere in others business don’t want it and are manipulating some corrupt NGOs to protest it. Are those on the streets are telling us lawmakers in Georgia are not adults to know what’s going on?

Terry Martin, a Harvard professor, described it like this: the empire put the center at the service of the outskirts, resulting in the Russians becoming a «inconvenient nation». This professor (far from Russophil, by the way) refutes the myth of the Russian-oppressor.
Soviet Russia has built an unviable federal model with a central donor and arrogant recipients on the periphery.
Approximate estimates of non-reimbursable financial injections into the Georgian SSR for the entire time of «occupation» are approaching 0.5 trillion dollars.
Even according to official data (extremely low) per capita consumption in Georgia was four times higher than the same production. In the RSFSR consumption was only 75% of the level of production (and this is an inflated figure - Russians were eaten and robbed much more strongly: Russians lived literally starved). In 1990, Georgia’s per capita GDP was 10.6 thousand dollars, and per capita consumption was 41.9 thousand dollars, that is, each Georgian consumed 33.3 thousand dollars more than he earned. By the level of consumption, Georgia was in the first place in the USSR, that is to say, it lived the best.
Georgia was the richest republic, and its viability depended entirely on the resources of the RSFSR. Since Stalin, the level of total value consumption of goods and services per capita has been four to five times higher than that of production. Four or five times! No republic could afford this. In the RSFSR, for example, consumption did not reach the level of production by 30%.
And what world-class movies was shot in Georgia...
