The inconsistency and lack of knowledge of the rules among jiu jitsu referees is insane. I've never seen anything more poorly officiated than jiu jitsu tournaments.

How the hell didnt mike get 2 for going to side control
my understanding is that you have to start by playing guard, and then "sweep" is when yo u reverse position, i.e. either put your opponent in guard or end on top of them. Now turtle is no longer considered a guard, so Mike wasn't playing guard - essentially it seems that,from the point of view of the rules, Mike and his opponent were in a "neutral" seated position so no sweep points, and obviously no takedown points. Since his opponent didn't play anything which is recognised as a guard, Mike also didn't get any points for "passing the guard". Interestingly it seems that 5-6 years ago Mike would have scored sweep points according to ibjjf rules back then, because turtle was considered a guard as legit as any other.
If I was to blame anybody, I wouldn't blame rules, but Mike's corner :-) for not encouraging him for going knee on belly or mount. If nothing else, this video and the ref's comments (Morgan Fraser below) were very enlightning to me in understanding ibjjf rules. Really when one thinks about it for more than 5 seconds, and not through the knee-jerk reaction "but in a real fight/mma fight this would be...", one has to come to considerable appreciation of how well-balanced those rules are (Mike was screwed by his lack of understanding of the rules, if he had a better corner, he'd go for mount or knee-on-belly and would stand a good chance to win or draw)

The ref in silverback’s last match was unfortunate. That’s how it goes sometimes, but it’s a tough pill to swallow when you don’t get points that you earned.
Great job to all who competed, and especially to the legendary coach lol.
He should have practiced the ”look”. Where you stare at the ref after each point earned. Maybe he didnt study the rules before the competion. Or maybe coach Tyler gave more attention to his more precious blue belts. Great series!

My favorite way to break a nasty triangle if I can get a little bit upright is to just step over and extend the opponents body. It's helped me as a white belt escape the clutches of a nasty purple belt I love rolling with.

Yeah points inconsistency is super annoying. I just competed in grappling industries maryland last night. There was a lot of it. Just being able to compete is what counts, but I feel like the points thing is a big reason my coach doesn't take these tournaments seriously as far as the results go. I hope they improve. Is IBJJF just as bad?
The point scoring system is pretty standard for most tournaments that use points. Side control is almost never points but passing the guard is so most of the times where a coach claims someone in this position "should have" got points, it's more of a philosophical statement than a mechanical statement.
ref messed up big time in the last match, opponent went from bottom side control -> front head locked -> in mike's guard and got awarded 2 points for a sweep. he never established a guard in between that so he wasn't in an attacking position which is a requirement for getting reversal/sweep points. match would have been 2-2 otherwise and mike might have gotten 1st in this tournament otherwise. wild!

One of the things you find out as you rank up is that it gets incredibly hard to find matchups in your correct division. There will usually be almost no black belts at a comp like this and sometimes not even any browns. I wouldn't be surprised if that brown competed in only the nogi division because there were no opponents available in gi. I did a tournament a few years ago at purple where my purple belt division was essentially an absolute with me and two other guys cause we were the highest ranked competitors there.
The other reply is right that finding people is very tough. However, there was another black belt at my weight I could have gone with. But if I’m being honest, If I want to compete in events, it’s going to be MMA. I like the feel of MMA and combining everything.

I love Mike but he got 3rd place dude that beat him got 2nd but he should of been atleast 4-4 in that last match.
Yea he’s fucking bum, if he does aikido he would’ve destroyed everybody, sadly he lost because he tried doing Jiu Jitsu with other Jiu Jitsu bums.

Point system is garbage. Should be stalling points. If they’re not advancing within 10 seconds then stalling should be called. Just because the rules are there doesn’t mean they’re “good”.
I'd be more careful with such strongly worded complaints. Clearly some people, e.g. Tyler, don't think much when they make rule change suggestions. For example in the previous video Tyler said that "performing a takedown which lands in side control" should be 6 points. To me it is clear that with such a change noone would ever engage in standup game anymore - most judo and wrestling throws land in some form of side control, so the risk of loosing 6 points would be too large, and people would typically immediately pull guard. Which is the opposite from what Tyler presumably hoped for.
For stalling points I suppose it's more subtle, but it is such a borderline ill-defined call that I'd rather not have it. Would you call stalling on somebody for example who's down on points, and who's in closed guard, waiting for opponent's mistake to sweep him? To me this is proper jiu-jitsu and I don't see how "stalling" could be easily defined in a fair way which doesn't go against the spirit of jiu-jitsu.
@@jinxit This is where difference of opinions are which is fine. I personally like high paced matches like Mikey. He's one of my favorite training partners. Compared to the slow paced old man jiu jitsu. We all have different things we like to see. I just don't agree with the point system and the rules which is fine.
@@katiethecamgirl6693 it is fine, but for the growth of the sport it would be better if people stood by the ibjjf ruleset, especially since it is a good ruleset. Mike would have won if he had a cornerman who understood the rules (he'd go to mount or knee on belly and probably score for that). Really, it's a good balanced ruleset. The only alternative, which is not a point system, for small scale tournament like this is basically "sub only, and if no sub then ref decides" which is a subjective crap. IMHO BJJ would grow much better if gym owners and "BJJ celebrities", like Tyler, tried to spend more time thinking about why this ruleset is good, even if they see shortcomings, and focus on this, and teach their students how this ruleset works. This would present a more unified image of BJJ to the outside world, which in turn is way more attractive than when everyone's promoting their own opinions, or talks shit about the major international body which represents the sport.
I suppose part of the problem is that some people would like everything in bjj to translate to mma, and when they see something which scores in bjj and doesn't give advantage in mma (or the other way around), they're disturbed by this, but this is not a great attitude for growing the sport (I see it in my gym sometimes, when I do something and mma guys pretend they're striking me, as if they had a need to subtly tell me that in "the real sport of MMA" it wouldn't actually work)
