You were right that this sits on the shelf. Finally bought it today after a few months seeing it behind the counter at my favorite local liquor store. $99.99, $108 after taxes. Kind of thinking I’ll wait until fall time to open it, seems fitting. Great review, can’t wait to try it.

I've been torn on getting this bottle. I'm sitting on 7 bottle of the special release 114 proof bottles that were put out in pa and Ohio. PA was blowing them out for $20 a bottle. It's delicious and at 124 proof and 100 bucks will it be worth it.
Hey Thomas! If you have 7 bottles of the 114 Proof, I would hold off on this purchase. I would rather get something different if you wanted to change the pace (JD barrel proof rye, knob creek single barrel rye, sagamore 8 year rye, etc.). But if you do pick this up, let me know how you like it!

Looking to get a pour of the Old Overholt. Never tried Parker’s either. I’m still very new to rye whiskey.
Hey Jim! Both the Old Overholt and the Parker's would be a good place to start (even though a little expensive) as they are both sweeter ryes that don't overwhelm you with the rye spice. If your looking into Ryes on the less expensive side, Pikesville Rye, Sagamore Cask Strength Rye, and Jack Daniel's Bonded Rye would be a great place to start your Rye journey as they are all sweeter Rye whiskeys. If you want to start with something with a little more proof, the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye is an awesome Rye (available at Cypress right now I believe for $80). Let me know which Rye you have tried and how you liked them!

If I want a rye the Overholt is the clear winner over the Parkers. The Parkers taste like a Bourbon. When I have a rye I want that spice kick and not just sweetness

I feel more times than not these "barely" a rye pours are right in my wheel house. Like Pikesville. Although the Jack Daniel's mash bill is quite good too. I just not sure if I can get past the fact that I can by two of either of the above mentioned for the price. I you said about the Parer's Heritage in comparison to Old Overholt 10. I mean... when and where do we draw the line and say "it's just brown consumable liquid " ? Each person has to set their own limits. My limit is right near that $100 mark along with the expectation to stay at or within say 20% of msrp, plus I refuse to support the whole secondary market that is driving the bubble.
This sounds like a personal problem for me to work through. Perhaps therapy is in order? LoL
I know it's the reason why I don't have really great bottles on my shelf. But the bottles I do have are every bit as delicious and I didn't break the bank.

Hey Dana! I would agree with you in that you certainly don't need to spend over $100 on any bottle as you will get probably 90% of the experience with great bottles like Pikesville, Sagamore Cask Strength, or Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof Ryes. But I like to think it's in the margins, especially at top, that make a subtle but tremendous difference.
This bottle is certainly a different experience than the bottles above and provides a smoothness that only age can bring. Of course, it's a small difference so I totally understand if you don't think that's worth it as everybody values things differently 😆.
I also will dream the prices will come down and we'll be talking about a $10 to $20 difference instead of in the hundreds!

You’re so right about people overlooking the 10 year Old Overholt. Even the clerks at my local had no idea where to put it. They ended up putting it 2 bottles over from the 4 year. Snagged one but haven’t opened it yet. I hope to get the same tasting notes.

Hey Rene! I love drinking whiskey so this works out very well! (mostly for me 😆). The Old Overholt 10 Year Cask Strength Rye is a good one to have a pour if you can as it's gives you everything a good rye should (rye punch, cinnamon, balance) but with a blast of fruit that is sensational! The "excuse" for me was it it's actually really hard to find that Old Overholt 114 here (harder than the 10 year cask strength actually), but that's an excuse, I should have included it in the lineup. I was just in Kentucky last week and it’s everywhere for around $40. I should have picked up a bottle but I didnt. 😢

Have you compared this Old Overholt 10 CS to Jack Daniel’s SBBP Rye?
I have! I would have to say Jack Daniel's SiB Barrel Proof Rye is slightly better as it is slightly more sweeter and smooth. Don't get me wrong, Old Overholt 10 rye is wonderful but the Jack Daniel's is just an awesome rye. It finished 2nd in my whiskey of the year so 😆.

Hey Dave! I had a great time reviewing this Rye! I believe 2023 was a great year for Ryes with Sagamore becoming a bigger presence, Jack Daniel's Bonded and Barrel Strength, and now the Old Overholt 10 Year Cask Strength! (I'm sure there is a ton more I can't list as I don't want this comment to be an essay). With the Bourbon lineups so heavily crowded with the big boys, it seems the Rye, BourRyes, Double or finished casks, and American Whiskeys (bourbons blended with "light whiskey") are trending and expanding at a incredible pace! Hopefully we'll see a ton more great Ryes in 2024!

@@WhiskeyBank Very welcome. I had just picked up a bottle, so I tried it earlier tonight. It was quite excellent, despite my being a bit congested. I second the luxardo cherry notes (which I love), caramel sweetness, baking spice. I listened to some other reviews that spoke about having the strong Jim Beam nuttiness profile but i think it’s very subtle if there at all. Also heard a lot of mention of “minty, spicy peppery” etc. didn’t really get much of that. Also agree with you on the mash bill. It seems closer to a barely legal rye than an MGP 95/5. You’re right on the money. Keep up the great work!

Hey Vic! I did overlook the 114 and didn't put it in the Old Overholt lineup. I guess my research skills are wearing down due to all the drinking. My "excuse" is that the 114 is actually really hard to find here in Southern California so it's like "out of sight, out of mind" kind of thing. Oh well, need to do better for future videos. That being said, you're right, it would be interesting to compare this to high rye bourbons instead of our Rye Whiskeys as it is on the sweeter side. Redwood Empire just came out with a high rye mashbill so if I get my hands on that, maybe it'll be a fun comparison!

Hey Dave! This one is definitely worth the pick up and worth every cent! It is on the sweeter side of the ryes and the fruit will keep you going back to it again and again! I had it over ice (just for you) after recording the video and it actually tones down the initial Rye burst on the palate and the fruit still stands out with the cinnamon finish still there. It was a quick comparison, but if the Parker's Heritage scored in the 9's, it would have won (PH needed a little more balance and complexity to get in the 9s, it was sweet dominant, but again, a good thing as 8.8 is a outstanding score). But with the difference in experience being so minor compared to the price and availability, getting the Old Overholt 10 year is just easier on the mind and body (and wallet!).

Nice review! I've been eyeing this one for a bit but the 100 price point is a little high to jump on. I'm going to kill a couple more bottles and pick it up some time next year. Still working on my Knob Creek Rye pick and that's been an okay experience, aged at 5yrs. Happy New Years!

The other juice I'm looking for is the Backbone Old Bones 10 yr Rye and price tag is close to $100. Never had Parker's Heritage 10 yr Rye and no way I'll pay above MSRP. Happy New Year and Cheers!

That's also the reason I don't have a bottle of the Parker's Heritage Rye as I don't mind paying a little over MSRP, but $400 to $500 is just too much.

Hey Carl! I never had a bottle of the Old Overholt 114 (and the reason I missed it on the video), but I had a couple pours of it but it was a good rye, but nothing special. The extra age really gives it the fruit that you don't get much of in the 114 that makes a great and wonderful experience. And the finish.... that sweet cinnamon at end... was just so amazing. I know it's just the finish, but that's the last thing you get and since it's so great, you just keep going back for it again and again! The 114 doesn't have that.
Just like JD Bonded Rye is great but definitely worth the upgrade to the JD Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye, it is worth the upgrade to from the Old Overholt 114 to the 10 Year Cask Strength!

There is no point to aging a rye.
Hey Garrett! I'm sure there is a point as if you don't age it... you'll just get grain 😆. But jokes aside, you're right in that there is a point of "diminishing returns" where the age add a lot of costs (and increases the price), but the quality of the Rye Whiskey isn't greatly improved. It seems the "sweet" spot for Rye Whiskeys for taste and price is around 6 to 8 years.
