This will go down probably as the most satisfying of all the RG victories - Zanschulp, Felix, Novak, Zverev, Ruud. 5 Seeded players and 4 top 10 on route. With absolute classics in 4th R and QF. And another potential classic in Semis still 3 hours. Add to the mix the Foot, Rib etc.. Everything was heavily stacked against Rafa- the draw, the preparation in clay court season, the health issues. So to do it with all these in play is extra terrestrial.
Rafa probably played the crucial matches with Felix and Novak which were true final and semi in no particular order. The last 2 GS - AO and this one is example of nothing sort of miracles.

Serena never had other players at her level for such a long time throughout her career, like Rafa did with Novak and Roger. That's why I think Rafa's 22 slams is more impressive than Serena's 23, Rafa had more intense competition. Serena had Stefi briefly at the beginning of her career, Venus for a few years, Henin and Clijsters for a few years, but the competition wasn't at her level for prolonged periods. Rafa has had to deal with peak Roger, then peak Novak, basically his entire career, and he has still won 22 slams!

First of all, I LOVE Rafa, and I greatly ADMIRE him for what he has achieved in the sport and because he is a wonderful person and a great ambassador for the sport. I will however say this : Sascha Zverev deserved to beat him in the semi-final. Firstly, he led 4-2 in games in the first set, and he led 6-2 in the tie-break, and with just a tiny bit of luck, he should have won the first set tie-break. Also, he was leading 6-5 in games in the second set when he injured himself. As I said, he really should have won the first set, and he surely had good chances of winning the second set, as he was leading when he injured himself. As the match had already lasted 3 hours, and with Rafa showing signs of fatigue, in my view Zverev - under normal circumstances - should have walked from the court as the winner. Sorry. A full length version of the Nadal - Zverev match would have been an absolute classic final, which the real final unfortunately was not.
I heard that from next year RG will only allow Rafa to play right handed.
