The Bocage in Normandy France was very thick. It could even stop tank rounds. They aren't just bushes, the base was created as a wall by Roman slaves a long time ago. Over the years vegetation grew over them and died repeatedly adding lots of dirt. Dirt + rock + thick bushes grown closely together creates a very hard obstacle. Read Beyond the Beachhead which has combatant's stories of how thick the bocage was. They'd be exhausted and unable to climb over and after both sides would run out of grenades throwing over the hedge, they both just camp through the night on just opposite sides of the hedge. There are accounts of them burning the hedge, then having Sherman bulldozers ram the hedges multiple times and failing to break through. Certain spots are weaker and less mounded. From further reading American engineers found the bocage a much harder obstacle than rows of dragon's teeth and barbed wire. From the look of things, this change is not good for authenticity.
There are still many hedgerows with the dirt core, just some hedgerows were changed. Some are even more dense than before, while some others are more sparse now. But they don't look bad at all imo.
yep its not only realistic but also good for the gameplay, u can easily move around the map with these hedges but now no longer, both bad for authencity and gameplay, i keep seeing people call these bushes and thinking its a gamey thingy while its not.
Cover vs concealment - the difference is important and matters, cover - they can't see or shoot you, concealment - they can't see you but they can hit you.
The hedgerows played a big role in certain arenas of the war. They were very thick causing choke points. Americans found it easier to make their own holes by using steel structures from the beach, fastened to their tanks. The hedgerows were a problem for the Americans to deal with costing many lives. Keep up the great content Mono!!
In reality, the Bocage in Normandy was a key element in the fighting, so nerfing the hedgerows is a major change to the game play and takes a significant impact on the reality of the game play.
this game has a problem with the over abundance of hedgrerows which make every map feel the same and very arcadey, SQUAD 44 maps feel far more realistic with the foliage much more resembling random real world greenery as opposed to COD 3-Lane maps
Easy fix for the bushes would be to let you build unlimited structures as an engineer. Also let stuff clip in a bit so you can tuck the walls up near the bushes. Engineers should matter more, or get an engeering vehicle like a bulldozer and bushes and small walls and fences be destroyable.
I wish there were more offensive engineer builds as well though too. Because on maps where you are attacking and nothing for you to defend, I feel like we should be able to make offensive things to help us take a heavily fortified objective besides satchels
it does matter because this isnt a milsim like squad 44/post scriptum, gameplay does in fact go before historical accuracy in this case, as hedgerows being able to be shot through/seen through depending on distance significantly changes the way its played as it can make points that were already difficult to take even harder

Especially if your versing someone on a Xbox series s that console can’t handle this game and every time I’m always getting shot from impossible angles from level 23 Timmy on his Xbox that can’t load any foliage
You wont be saying that when you can't spawn anywhere because the MG's are tearing through every bush and there's nowhere to go, it's a mistake and a lot of people will stop playing.
@skapunkno1 Well, take your own MG and shoot trought the bushes as well. It's also cool that you can pop trought any bush take a peak and shoot. Also, it's more realistic, and even if I die more, I'm ok with it.
Bushes are not considered cover - generally speaking - bushes are for concealment. So I should be able to shoot through them. Hedgerows? Bocage? Now that’s a whole different story if HLL can make that sh*t realistic.
Shoot through, yes. See through because you're a few meters away and the LoD drops, no. It'll make detecting hackers even more difficult at best and just encourage camping on high traffic flanking routes where those attacking think they're being stealthy. I don't see anything good about the hedgrow change that will make gameplay better.
Mono, another massive change. I was playing Mortain warfare and could not get to the enemy artillery to take it out. It would let me go 35 meters into the final grid square of the enemy territory and a 10 second timer came up telling me to turn back. I didn’t see anything in the patch notes about this. It’s very strange and has a lot of questions surrounding this decision.
Bushes should have similar slow to barbed wire (but can pass through) and maybe have a some kind of sound when moving through. That would be best of both worlds I feel.
hedgerows are extremely thick walls of vegetation that had been cultivated by french farmers for nearly a millennium prior. the allies had to add hedgerow cutters to their tanks just to bypass them, and US infantry would be forced into narrow alleys that acted as killzones.
ive always hated the stupid bush walls that plague nearly all the older HLL maps, they feel stupidly arcadey and gimmicky breaking immersion. just walls of bush and empty fields between which make for extremely repetetive "run along bush row A to bush row B" gameplay. with this map design you rarely get realistic feeling infantry combat unlike SQUAD44
I think a nice compromise regarding the bushes would be to have them solid (so they act as concealment) but bullets can penetrate (i.e. they are concealment but NOT cover).
I have no clue the names of the maps honestly lmao but ill say this, how long ive been able to hear enemies behind hedges then being able to get a double or triple, as they step out or i swing, is staggeribg. I seriously dread playing Stalingrad. My PC is admittedly old at this point, but Stalingrad is damn near unplayable to an extent that I don't see with the other maps.
I hate that behind stone fences your head still popping out when it looks like it's behind cover, so I just play with lean option on toggle, looks dumb
Honestly if they nerf the hedgerows it's gonna make pushing the points much harder since most of the maps is open areas after that. Idek if it's a good thing or not. I can agree about Mortain haven't played the PTE because I'm on ps5 but honestly they could dragged the main town in the middle like you said. Hopefully there's good ways to Flank atleast. There were see through hedges in early access as well. With extreme LOD issues. They went to the hedges with walls inside to make the game more playable. I wonder why they bring back the see through hedges again, after is created a lot of frustration and issues in early access. In my opinion nothing should stop rendering. Instead of not displaying it, just place a green wall or something. And especially things like walls and trees, houses etc should not get invisible. This was a thing that worked better in early acess as well.
The points make sense as a final one for the US as a balancing aspect in my view. The Germans have a straight show the the middle point and it’s a little more driving for the Americans.
I really wish that they would make night maps without all the fog. It makes me hate night maps. It doesn't feel dark or like night time it feels like I have my contrast turned all the way up and is washed out. Foy is the only good night map that is clear you can see the stars. It looks great.
Why would they change the Bocages one of the main aspects of the war in france which notoriously made it harder for tanks to fight, to benefit tanks ?! You literally had to outfit tanks with rams to destroy them.
I haven't played the PTE, but I'm looking forward to the new hedgerows. I think any change to encourage slower play is a good one. I'm not a fan of the constant run across the field and rush-the-point type of play I see. I want more coordination between squads, timing of attack, commands from COMMANDER etc. to matter. Right now, it feels like you can win with only a few squads communicating. Of course, I'm talking about pub matches.
Great video as always. I think the bushes behaving like bushes is an improvement. If they want a wall then put a wall or whatever as a barrier then. It will change how people play for sure but possibly for the better as the angles of approach are now much more varied. It may encourage engineers to think differently. Going to be interesting.
I mean the maps are supposed to be at least somewhat representative of what was really there. Most of the bocage was super thick, not just some bushes but straight up thick knotted walls of brush and dirt and stone. It was closer to the big thick impenetrable walls we have had than just a little mound and some shrubbery.
I see complaining but it's actually realistic bushes are not steel walls you literally can walk outside your door and walk THROUGH a set of bushes as you should here 🤷🏾♂️
The bocage are not like any random standalone bush. They were damn near impenetrable even for tanks. There are for sure some bushes/locations that could be revisited, but the idea of taking away one of the defining aspects of the terrain in Normandy is not a good one. I like that it's going more real but also already think many of the existing maps are such a struggle when all the cover is just hedgerows Hopefully you can't just walk through all of them and pop out and shoot

Those hedge rows aren't going to work FULL STOP, I don't mean to be comparing this to Tarkov because they are totally different games BUT if you were going to make the hedge rows vulnerable you need the level of thick scrub
I don’t mind the hedges being able to walk through at certain points, but maybe make it a slow walk through, like you’re trying to make it through the brush. Making them see through when you zoom in is ridiculous. Making ALL the hedges see through is also ridiculous. Some were thicker than others.
When you push an update for console, you need to pay for it to be checked and approved by Sony/Microsoft. No such thing in PC, meaning they can do as many changes as they want and test them "for free". The PTE is a completely separate client. You would have to download a separate version of HLL in its entirety to play it.
Yeah I understand it's more complicated/expensive, would be nice if I could transfer my unlocks to pc if I bought a 2nd copy, I got all classes to lvl 10 and don't want to do that grind again, and yes I'm sure if they did that people would level up on consol and switch to pc where things seem more competitive lol can never make everyone happy lol
I personally have to disagree with the complaint of the town being the last point. While I understand the annoyance, inconvenience, etc of not being able to always play in the town, I think the maps should stay true to historical accuracy. Just my opinion though, great video as always Mono.
They need to fix the issues it already has like getting kicked mid match and cant get back in. Take it off free play because we have COD and Fortnite players who come in and ruin the game for the rest of us too.
bush wall maps always are just hold W along the bush wall A to bush wall B to get closer to enemy point, boring as hell and very arcadey. that map design is a why i hate playing infantry on any of those maps, they feel like COD 3-lane maps to a degree
What a horrible change to the hedge rows. Boooooooo! I mean at least have some complete cover left but to have them all shoot through areas, so drastic. Now, I really hate this game. I'm gonna get post scriptum and play that instead.
So I take it you haven't played S44 as well because that's how Squad 44 treats the bushes; see-through and you can shoot through them. You can even walk into them and come up on the other side at a slower pace, similar to walking through barbed wires and tanks can just go through them. I don't think you understand what you've just said. Not to mention, and not to demean Squad 44, you're not always going to get a game considering the game is populated, on average at max, with 300-400 odd players every day.

@@monoespacial I'm gonna say thanks for answering in advance I really appreciate it srr to just let this comment here which isn't that related to your video but man I've just bought the game before a few days and I was so disappointed it . I'm gonna check it thanks for the suggestion 😁
Why no pte for consol 😢
No point in them releasing these games on console when PC gets all the features and additions we just get the base game
Hey mono it’s me Rocketman
If you want realism there you go... You can shoot through a bush in real life...I like it !!
never liked the bush wall, real life bushes are just concealment not cover
You are right of course. I *think* it was meant to originally represent "bocage" which was the impenetrable hedgerows which were in Normandy.
@@neekBG3 fair enough, they should make it so its hard to see through them tho if thats the case
The real hedgerows in france was really like walls, no joke. There are photos of sherman tanks stuck in it or couldn't drive through.
I personally have to disagree with the complaint of the town being the last point. While I understand the annoyance, inconvenience, etc of not being able to always play in the town, I think the maps should stay true to historical accuracy. Just my opinion though, great video as always Mono.
I disagree about the town being at the center, that seems way too arcadey
New hedgerows are really bad for infantry gameplay and tank gameplay will be bad too. Bushes are lower now, so the turret looks always out.
i would prefer to pay 25 euros per year for each DLC, and get good maps, then to buy it once, and to have mediocre maps
Ahh, hedgrow hacks. Great addition, not.
They need to fix the issues it already has like getting kicked mid match and cant get back in. Take it off free play because we have COD and Fortnite players who come in and ruin the game for the rest of us too.
lol
I never liked the hard wall bushes. If this makes people think more tactically then good.
bush wall maps always are just hold W along the bush wall A to bush wall B to get closer to enemy point, boring as hell and very arcadey. that map design is a why i hate playing infantry on any of those maps, they feel like COD 3-lane maps to a degree
Disagree 100% the map should not be moved. Having the town not always in play makes it exciting when it is.
What a horrible change to the hedge rows. Boooooooo! I mean at least have some complete cover left but to have them all shoot through areas, so drastic. Now, I really hate this game. I'm gonna get post scriptum and play that instead.
What? You want non realism? That's stupid as shit and you belong in another game if believe they should be bullet cover!
War of rights for a wonderful community
I wish they would stop reducing the lod draw distance, each update the game looks worse.
Game is unplayable on XSX. So laggy.
Runs perfectly for me.
they just keep making the game worse lol
How
Moved to War of Rights.
Better community
Better devs
Historically accurate
Screw COD/BF5/Bots/Hax let loose and go to a real game with a real community
Tiny player base comparatively. Gota join a unit for WoR. Otherwise game is pretty eh
omg please Trash17 please, stop trying to do something with this game, abandon it and work on HLL 2 because fucking christ every single thing they do just breaks the game...
