What's the difference between jungle & breakcore? I'm confused xD
Some find it confusing as both genres apply the same techniques to their drums. It's just that Jungle tends to not "overdo" it.
Jungle is DnB with fast breakbeats for the drums and has at least one or more distinct effects/techniques applied to the drums, which we will get to later.
Breakcore is either Hardcore EDM oriented towards breakbeat sampling or (in the case of the new Breakcore we have today) fast-paced Electronica with breakbeat sampling.
Jungle balances between the rhythm and the basslines and other musical elements while maintaining that it is still danceable (or that you can bounce your head to it.)
Jungle producers are careful not to overdo the drums to the point that it would overwhelm the mix and the track's composition.
Breakcore primarily focuses on the drums and is treated like melodies (hence the extreme variety of rhythm) and religiously utilizes all the techniques that were originally used to introduce depth to Jungle's drums.
If not constrained by the conventions of music-industry-standard mixing, Breakcore producers sometimes jack up the drums so that they can overwhelm the mix into a mush (because mushy makes a gritty track, one just like Sewerslvt's) or use it as a means to a crescendo. (a clear example in "Goreshit - O'er the flood")
Otherwise, breakcore producers have to make room to make a balanced mix with typical mixing techniques (like making room for the breaks or the other elements by panning, reducing frequency overlap via filters, limiting effects to one or a few elements of the music, reducing musical elements or making one sound louder and the other less so. "Daisuke no Shi no Daisuke - Nyojikko" and "不覚にもムエタイ - ありがとうって言いたいな" for examples)
The techniques that are common to both genres are the following:
- Layering multiple drum tracks
- Pitch-shifting
- Chopping / Slicing
Lastly, you can single-out Jungle by checking whether or not there is a bassline.
Jungle tracks will always have a bassline (it can't be Drum and Bass if there ain't no bass)
Breakcore tracks may or may not have a bassline.
@@hammercroftDude just dropped one of the most detailed breakdowns of the difference between two genres I've ever seen, in a single reply to a comment over half a year old. Bravo.
@@hammercroft godlike answer, thanks HC 💎
Bro... facts@@hammercroft
There is no difference and i personaly don't know why this generation all of the sudden use the buzz word "Breakcore" to discribe this type of music.
We just called that DnB, Jungle or Breakbeat in the 90s and early 2000s
I'm glad that we're going through a bit of a DnB revival at the moment.
I think artists like PinkPantheress who popped off on the tiktok scene, really contributed to the revival of the genre. She was my gateway to the genre.
me too
Same. Tobias Dray is one artist I can think of that’s kind of pushing it rn
@@diogenesbarrel7350 it seems like so many people have had different entry points into dnb/jungle the past few years and it's just so cool to see.
@@scoob2cool516 I genuinely haven't listened to DnB for about 10-12 years
Gotta love how jungle genre is being maintained alive since the 90s by people with a great taste for music

AMEN ❤
Does flying lotus have slight influence from jungle?
wait jungle is a GENRE? i clicked the video thinking it was something for Terraria i dunno like "music to listen while fighting a underground jungle boss"
I can't stop emphasizing on how much I love this, always had some audial recall from this genre back in the 2000s, goes well with studying, gym, late night walks, late car drives in empty streets(appreciating every detail, fancy skyscrapers, lights, led/neon signs), having nostalgic vibes correlated to multiple media from TV, old enime edits, old minitages, old internet era to simply just hearing it in public. Simply goated.
Toonami was the gateway drug for DNB to me
@@beefybriles I happened upon Massive Attack and DJ Shadow in a friend's collection in 1994. I had felt pretty sheltered, and not to slight on any music genre, but my house was classic rock and metal. When I found trip hop, jungle, dnb etc... it was refreshing, and still is. Love all music. It loves us back.
feels a bit sad almost? but i cant help but smile anyways. really just that feeling of insane nostalgia like you said.
@@129lolyt best way to cherish it is to relive it, I still play many genres like these such as hardtrance breakcore etc...
Specifically the 2000s genres, so good, so heavenly, makes you ascend to a higher plane at this point
im so glad this style of music is getting as popular as synthwave/vaporwave was back in the 2010s.
Synthwave has been growing a lot since the pandemic
@Vice'sDelusion And then there's songs like Sedai no SCREAM by Demondice that's a mix of both.

love your music!
i love music and aesthetics like this so much, man. theres something so nostalgic, yet conflictingly futuristic about it all. its incredibly calming and beautiful, frankly. music like this heals the soul
It’s something really unique to the early 2000’s. We thought we WERE the future. The art, the fashion, the architecture, everything we made had this hopeful naïveté to it. Really strange looking back.
the yesterday sound of the future, today
@@altzadhalis6625 that is super interesting... I've heard this a lot from those who experienced the late 90s and early 00s. No other generation has seen itself as the future in such a way, must've been so surreal. It still sounds futuristic.
Dude, yes this exactly!! I've been saying this for years, it feels like its in the past but also way into the future.
Its called Retrofuturism
I remember when I was younger and didnt do anything productive other than school I would go soundcloud digging for hours and hours some days and its great to see people making youtube channels dedicated to that, theres so much good shit buried all over the internet just waiting to be discovered
Your music taste is absolutely wild. This mix of artists has sent me into an entirely new genre I have never heard before
Some of biggest names in Jungle right now are Tim Reaper, Coco Bryce, Dead Man's Chest, Pete Cannon, 4am Kru and Sully, to name a few. They're all worth checking out if you're brand new to the genre. Definitely try and dig around for more obscure artists though, 'cause you'll find some absolute gems if you do. For example, DJ 유틸리티 조끼 (DJ Utility Vest) is a good and fairly obscure Jungle producer from Korea I found recently.
@@dxmthl hey thank you!! I will!
Did you try "Artcore" yet? czcams.com/video/o8aELn5IsRk/video.html

@@dxmthl Are these new songs or are they like 10 years old or smth
@@BS-si6pj All of them have had at least 1 release this year. Tim Reaper specifically has been on at least 12 records released this year, when accounting for all the remixes, solo EPs and collabs he's done.
i know jungle was never really dead as it was well maintained by dedicated DJs and ravers but seein it flourish through CZcams and a younger generation is really amazing!
An underground playlist w/ links back to the artists direct sound clouds? God damn man don't stop keep this shit ROLLING.
Still thriving even after 30 years, never seen a genre like this.
classical music is pretty old
@@ecciq hip hop started in the 70s, took off in the 80s and 90s and is now one of the largest genres on the planet. There are many genres that are thriving today and are much older than 30 years old (jazz, rnb, soul, funk, hip hop, and many varieties of electronic). Many survive underground, some resurface, all are appreciated :) much love and dont take my comparison as anything but me just sharing a little perspective
Punk has been dead for 50 but annoying people keep revivifying its putrid corpse for some reason

Started listening to jungle & breakcore recently and I instantly fell in love with the drum patterns. something with it feeling sporadic maybe? The vibes of it are some of the best in edm imo with few genres having as good of an overall vibe as this.
growing up in the 90s (so many of my favorite video games and ones i enjoyed playing had THIS genre of music and listening to it now ( i’m 27 ) makes all the sense why this sound has always caught my attention no matter who makes it. the games that had this and was jus carving this into my young ears i’m so appreciative to people who go all out w these mixups. keep it up man.
i'm also 27 but can't say we grew up in the 90's man. We were babies. What i agree with is that 90's music and technology has carried on through our formative years. I played the PS1 until like 2005.
It was in some cartoons and animes too like the power puff girls, ghost in the shell and igpx. I had no idea this is what the genre was call but could immediately recall wat shows I had seen with this sound growing up in the 90s and early 00s😅
You were barely sentient in the 90s dude

I did NOT come here to hear the funny blue hedgehog taunting me about how slow I am 😤
Seriously though, this is a really good mix to vibe to and work along with. It never feels samey because of how drastically the beats change with each track, and yet it still gives a consistent experience somehow.

What a lovely playlist. Thanks for putting it together I've been listening to it while doing work and vibing it's great
For a long time I thought that I was a fan of breakcore or happy breakcore, but was always left unsatisfied with the constant dark themes and childish pretentiousness of the first one and diabetes inducing sweetness, cuteness and quirkiness of the latter. Turns out I was actually looking for jungle. Thank you and the gods for this mix and its appearance in my recommended.

11:35 oooz - *cloud zone* made me feel something I can't explain... everytime the tone changed in this track, my heart would pump an intense, profound heartbeat and a very weird, but comforting warmth would fade in and gradually fill my chest, after each beat. It misteriously reminded me of a place I painfully miss and wish to go to instantly, even though I've never been in, or at least don't recal being in before, therefore the idea of going there kind of scares me a little... I sort of resonate with it, as if I've always known this strange place, as if the feeling I have right now, had always been with me since the begining. It's so crazy how melodies can tell you so much, without even saying a word and show you things you would never be able to see through with your own eyes. It speaks in such ways you can't comprehend, but you don't need to in order to experience the moment and accept the message: the unexpected, but meaningful contact with the unknown makes up for a satisfying discovery, a beautiful paradox. This whole thought process taught me that things don't always have to make sense for beauty to reside in them. I guess this is what happens when you connect with a bunch of miraculously well arranged frequencies on a deeper level, almost feels spiritual at times. Never knew you could fall in love with music this way.
this one was my favourite too its amazing
Well put. Feel the same. How do we get there?
