The dog again is metaphorical. It's the same as Kamal..if you notice the lady on the hill says this dog is like public property it stays anywhere . Eats anything. And Kamal says just like me.. and before the accident the dog like sivam was aggressive and post accident it becomes more sober. And ofc the injury to the dog is just the same as his . I will paste a lot of more information that you may have missed . This film is just filled with allegories and metaphors

One important point. Dog gets into trouble chasing car. Kamal's troubles also start as a car wants to pass through, during their dance.

    1. The movie anbe sivam for starters is a combination of the names of the protagonists. Anbu from anbarasan and sivam from nalla sivam. If you notice the characters are also shown or introduced in the same order
    2. Anbu Arasu doesn’t like the word anbu in his name and likes to be called as A. Ars and this is also shown throughout the movie where is he is shown to be a self centred man
    3. Nalla sivam on the other hand before the accident prefers to be called nalla as sivam denotes lord Shiva and him being an atheist doesn’t like that. Post the accident , he is treated by isster Vanessa and the other nuns and then begins to understand that human beings take the form of God. This leads to his metamorphosis into sivam
    4. The sivam before and after the accident are almost two different people , not just physically but also in terms of their characters., Nalla is shown as more aggressive and sivam is shown to always be joking around and considerate.
    5. Sivam is mostly seen wearing red or black which signify his core beliefs i.e. atheism and communism. In the climax when he writes a letter to ars the antagonist tells him that he will now become a hero among the workers, for which he replies he is merely a tool like the hammer and the sickle (something similar) which is the symbol of communism
    6. The dog is another metaphor and is shown to be similar to sivam. In one scene he is told that the dog doesn’t belong to anyone and is public property and he calmly remarks that he is no different. The dog is shown to have a limp on its right leg and a scar on the left side of its face which again is the same with sivam
    7. The bus accident causes the transformation of nalla to sivam and the train accident causes the transformation of madhavan to become god in the eyes of Sivam. This in fact is shown metaphorically when madhavan walks out of the tent and spreads his arms and says take my blood . Kamal here comes and says no one is going to crucify you thereby indicating that madhavan then becomes god
    8. The kid who dies in the accident is called pown Raj and his death creates the impact madhavan. Kamals friend who dies in the bus accident is also called pown and when kamal hears the name of the kid in the ambulance he says “ pown again?” thereby telling us that this kid is meant to die ..a brilliant bit of foreshadowing
    9. The ball which madhavan purchases for pown and kamal is in the shapte of a globe thereby reiterating madhavans belief that a credit card can help u conquer the world
    10. The duality in the movie is shown in several places notably when kamal knows his girlfriend and calls her bala again ignoring the Saraswathi ( name of a god ) and madhavan calls her saras and not bala. Kamal says he is 0 positive and madhavan is ab negative again showing their traits. Even the saint gobain ad that madhavan has made reflects his personality, the two guys assume that the lady is about to pour the water on them and take evasive action only to be proven wrong, which happens with madhavan on multiple occasions
    11. Kamals character is based on Safdar hashmi a man who was killed for standing up for the workers cause
    12. Kamal spoke about the tsunami when most of India hadn’t heard about it and the very next year the tsunami hit tamilnadu
    13. At the airport, when madhavan tries to hide from kamal post mistaking him to be a terrorist, he breathes a sigh of relief and says thank God only to see kamal saying hello to him once again to show us that kamal will be his god in their journey and save him on multiple occasions
    14. When madhavan cries after the kids death, he is seen lamenting and kamal is looking straight ahead , at one point madhavan says what kind of God is this and that moment kamal faces madhavan again signifying that kamal plays the role of God for madhavan and at that .kment madhavan also turns to face kamal and says I am not like you. Just another piece of brilliant writing that encapsulates the whole movie in one scene

It's not a random dog. It's the actual dog that caused the bus accident in the first place & literally everyone wanted to kill it. But Sivam is the only one that takes it in and gives it love despite it causing the accident that made him into the way he was. He should be the one to be angry at the dog but he instead chose love, that's how his relationship with dog is so deep and special.
Love something that society would hate & think you should hate.

Nalla was a strong, intelligent, talented and attractive man. Sivam is a handicapped and disfigured man. The accident changed that character completely. Bala had fallen in love with Nalla, not Sivam. If Sivam had gone to see Bala and proved that he is alive. That is indirectly asking her to make a very hard and self questioning choice between her old lover (who has lost all the qualities that she had fallen in love with) and the man she was about to marry. Sivam spared her from making this choice. Spared her from that heartbreak and pain.

I would like to talk about the build-up to that villain character and not making him the reason behind sivam facing that accident.
First we have to understand that this film at its core is about LOVE IS THE REAL GOD. if that villain had been the reason behind that accident in any way, the "forgiveness factor" will not make any sense and it would have been a HERO VS VILLAIN thing. It's only becuz it's a DOG, the line LOVE IS GOD hits you hard when sivam forgives the dog and takes it with him.
Also that villain is there is this story for a PURPOSE. It's not a simple hero-villain stuff. It's about the ideology of the story and the ideology it celebrates. A ruthless businessman unleashing his full power against raising salaries of workers by even a small margin is hallmark of many capitalistic societies. And this film addresses it from a HUMANIST point-of-view

  • @AravindHan008
    @AravindHan008 Před 2 lety +22

don't confuse jaby , this is how life works .
the reason the villan doesn't punished in this movie is how real the world works , there is no karma or god its purely your own mind/heart that gives verdict to your actions , in this movie the villan is a firm believer of god shiva and he thinks the tragic happens to kamal is the answer to his prayers and that's why he left him in hospital saying the lord will take care of him.
there is artistic point of view of human physic saying " you can murder someone and escape from laws , police and everyone but you can't escape from your mind/heart it will haunt you till the last day atleast it remanding you that what you did is not the correct thing and this thoughts/verdict about your actions will act as karma / god , if you heart didn't say anything about the bad things you do then there is no wrong in it.( 99.9% people mind will say things correctly so one can escape )

There are a lot of under pining in this movie. To understand them you will need to watch the movie few more times. Just for instance, a scene that you discussed - Anbuaras throwing away the ball - meant that he thought he knows the world as it was in his palm and because of the kids demise, he is forced to throws it away. His belief in a system and everything else shattered. Listen to the conversation with this backdrop and the dialogues will make more sense.

I saw this in your RRR review too that you missed the whole point.
The intentions of a movie are more important than a character getting justice or being important.
Shivam left a very high impact on Aras forever.
The girl finding out starts a new drama and divert the movie into an unnecessary thing which is not the intention of this movie. May be in an imaginative spin off if can be addressed.
But It would have ruined the whole core of the movie.

Fantastic review and discussion Achara and Jaby! I agreed with Jaby's take on how a wealthy person might spew some "lessons" for people watching but doesn't necessarily uphold those him or herself which I'm sure comes from a place of caring for normal people being affected by hypocrisy . But at the same time Achara mentioned that you take the good things and move on to reviewing about actor's performance. What Achara mentioned kinda touches the type of yoga called karma yoga, which is also a way to enlightenment. Devotion and love are just two different aspects of reaching God according to scholars in old vedic cultures. Doing the right things is also a way to reach enlightenment according to many great people who had been recognized as the enlightened like Lord Krishna, Swami Vivekananda etc. Lovely discussion again☺️

Anbe sivam is a timeless classic, one amongst Kamal Hassan top characters. I cry everytime I see many scenes. It was not well understood at its time, but for me when i saw it during its release, it was wow. Emotional for large part of the movie. Without doubt Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan and Chevalier Kamal Hassan are the two shining stars of INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY. I know quite a few languages and from the days of doordarshan regional movies, i have watched many actors, actresses of many regions, many languages but proud about these two maestros.

I read this somewhere and was shocked at the details of this film. In the movie Kamal Hassan's name is Nallasivam and madhavan's name is Anbuarasu. However Kamal would not like the sivam in his name and make everyone call him nala and on the other hand madavan wouldn't like the word Anbu in his name and make everyone call him Arsu. But if you see through the movie - Madavan would call Kamal as Mr.Sivam and Kamal would call Madavan - Mr.Anbu

Well here's the thing, you not getting this movie or liking it is expected. In fact, the Tamil audience only started to celebrate this movie after a decade of its release. This is a movie that you've to watch twice to under what it is trying to convey. It is a bit complex like that.
And also, Kamal had to write in certain masala elements to the story in the middle so that the casual audience will be satisfied (which they were not, considering how the movie flopped). This was because Kamal's previous films were al underperforming in the box office with the audience calling them "intelligible"

according to me anbu (madhavan) is pure capitalist he always talks me myself etc.
sivam (kamal hasan) is pure communist he is all about labour rights etc.
this movie brings capitalist and communist on same table and keep their view.
but at last capitalist gets the girl while communist gets what he wants for labour.
    it is win win situation.

He did my dear Jaby. The diabolical guy tried to get Sivam killed. But the guy who let him go ‘discovered god’ by showing mercy… a.k.a. “Anbu”. By trying to save the young boy, Aras discovered god… basically god is in all of us. And to see it, you have to simply share/show/give love a.k.a. “Anbu”.
Title of the movie “Anbey Sivam” = “Love is god”.
Its a communist guy who is an atheist, who discovers God in people. Simple. The main characters have an arc, including the guy who dropped the idea of killing Kamal…. Except the diabolical guy.

Great observation Archara and Jaby, for some reason I do feel like you missed the point of the movie, not sure if it is a cultural or language barrier, very well could be.
Kamal is an outspoken Atheist. The lyrics of this song "Yaar yaar Sivam? Nee naan Sivam, Anbe Sivam" summarizes the entire movie perfectly. It means "Who is God? It is you and I, love is God". So it actually has nothing to do with God or holiness or God's love, he's simply saying whoever you are, whatever age or stature, "be kind", "show love" and the world will be a better place, you know?
