Will never happen. Gabe Newell doesn’t like Microsoft. That’s why he’s been pushing Linux for years and that’s why the steamdeck runs Linux. Gabe wants to get away from MS having a stranglehold on the pc games industry.

Lord Gaben our savior of gaming

I mean, he worked for Microsoft and was laughed out of the boardroom when he proposed the PC gaming platform back in the 90s
Someone at Microsoft is probably losing sleep over that to this day.

Microsoft doesn't have a relationship with Valve.
Microsoft is forced to sell their games on Steam to diversify their revenue sources and increase profits for share holders.
Gabe Newell started Valve in spite of Microsoft.
This could only happen if Gabe is no longer the chief of Valve or if Gabe has a change of heart.

@@Veritaserum90 Yes, but I think it would be bad for OS competition, tying gaming more strongly to Windows again, so I would hope that even if Gabe said yes, the regulator would block it.

Don't see it happening as long as Gabe is alive. First of all he owns the majority of the company and thus calls all the shots. What motivation does he have to sell Valve?
Let's see. He hates Microsoft. He pushes for Linux adoption and Linux compatibility every chance he gets. His company is super profitable and basically has a monopoly when it comes to viable platforms for selling games on PC. So not exactly aching for money. There are no positives to selling off Valve, the only thing he'll get is watching a legacy that took decades to build crumble before his eyes.
I just really don't see it happening.

The only way I can see this going good (and I use that term loosely) is if Xbox decides to fully integrate Windows with Xbox hardware. That way when people buy Xbox hardware and then immediately go buy all their games from Steam, they're still within Microsoft's ecosystem. People like Knowledge Husk have been talking about this for a while and, tbh, I'd love an Xbox console or Steamdeck clone with full blown Windows compatibility. Problem is, MS and Xbox are terrible at managing things so they'll probably run it into the ground quickly.

  • @AtPlume
    @AtPlume Před 25 dny +1

This will never happen. Valve despises Microsoft, that isn't new. Hell, it could be argued that the Steam Deck exists because of a series of decision motivated by this animosity.
Even beyond this I don't think it will be allowed to happen because Microsoft is once again trying to become a giant monopoly over everything. Every time they tried in the past they've been forced to back down.
But let's pretend that it actually happens. If this actually happens, if somehow Microsoft manages to buy Steam, I can't imagine something worse for gaming. It would be a catastrophe. A cataclysm. The gaming apocalypse. Like, I can't even put in two words how bad it would be. Long term, I think it's safe to say that, with no exaggeration, jt would be the worst thing to ever happen to video games.

Microsoft doesn't have the money to buy steam.
Valve just essentially generates free money via their 30% cut and just provide thier (relatively) cheap services due to the sheer size and scale of valve corp.

Microsoft took military grants to buy Minecraft because they thought kids sharing flat earth jokes were speaking in code with block placement to trade Nuclear Arms secrets. It all started with some guy who made a circuit diagram in Minecraft.
