Bless Alan Rogan, God bless him for his suffering! He's Pete's Guitar tech - It took him 17 seconds to deliver another tuned and capo'ed Strat to Pete.....We fans love and appreciate you!
You are so right, that guitar tech is probably the best in the business. I love when he brushes pete's arm and hands him a new guitar ready to go, pete isn't mad or happy he is just like 'ya' like that is exactly what was supposed to happen. lol
Mike Patton Way to put it Mike,, way to put it. I laughed a long time of that remark. And when hes finally down there, he probably kicks the lid off, complaining that the whole damn case isnt the right size. ( mind you, people from Shepherds bush in general, are no sissys,, they´re usually called "a regular doimond geezer". :-).
Mike Patton I went to see them in Dublin last week. I went along hoping that I might see a bit of impressive/unique guitar work from Pete, but deep down I knew I wouldn't. Got talking to a middle aged who fan on the way to the concert who'd seen them two nights before. He said they were fantastic. I just thought to myself... 'you're a die hard who fan.. you'd say that anyway.' At the rate Pete's going, in a few years all he'll be able to do is swing his arm!!!! That never did it for me. 2007 was the last year he could sing this properly. On the rare occasion, he makes a proper impressive effort of the guitar solo intro to Eminence Front!
Floyd Collins Great insight brother. I think at this point, it's fair to expect that we will never see the Townsend of circa 65'-75' ever again. And now without Entwistle and those Godly bass lines dominating the subs, and of course, Moon, The Who is now sort of a novelty act with a bunch of sidemen. I love them with all my heart but I think it would just break my heart to see them live now. Peace.
+Mike Patton I saw them in chicago in probably 1980. The band opened with their song 'Substitute.' I think that summed it up and says it all, was for a reason. Rock on.
Legend! Great guitar player/songwriter! Never missed a beat even after the guitar incident. Zak is such a powerhouse drummer and the rest of the band nails it. Thanks for the upload!
Immediately, when they give him the new guitar, the difference is there. Love how he just throws it, like "New one!" I think he's happier with the sound of the new one. Legend.
tabbygail7 I think there's a clip of him doing Face the Face on his solo tour where he just stands and sings it... I seem to remember he does this weird dance thing with it too.
Great Sound for a hand held device!!! Yeah, Pete is getting old, and his voice is sounding a little worse for the wear... but FUCK, its the WHO just the same, you know? Loved it!!! Thanks for the excellent vid, mate!
Sometimes we get a little cranky in our old age....A Good stage hand is always prepared to come to the Rescue! Gotta Love him for what he's accomplished over the years and what he's given us. He's gotta be up there in years? 60+ ?
@foxden902- What do you think mod was? It was about style, fashion and attitude. Its why they sang "hope I die before I get old" Perhaps they should have sang "hope I die before I wear jogging bottoms and look like a bag of rags"
Man, I know that feeling. I've wanted to throw my out of tune, malfunctioning guitar many times. I just don't have the luxury of having a personal tech bring me a new one!
RIP Alan Rogan, you just know he looked skyward when Townshend chucked that Strat and said to himself "Here we go..." I LOVE those modified Clapton Strats Townshend uses, well now they've no doubt had his name put on them since the Custom Shop released that signature model a few years ago. That preamp coupled with the Fishman bridge is just so cool, Townshend rarely uses it like Clapton does to get that faux humbucker compressed woman tone, instead Pete just uses it to drive those VibroKing amps' front end just a bit. Great tone. And Zak using that X-hat as high as a crash cymbal is badass. It's like he's always open when he plays, since he's not crossing his arms playing standard hats. Dude's just an ice cold drummer, one of the best.
@foxden902- I think my remarks were less about fashion and more about Pete's appearance as evidence he could be going through the motions ("phoning it in"). So yeah - you totally missed the point of my comments. And if we're going to split hairs, at least initially the Who's music WAS at least in part about "clothes and shaving" - they were a Mod band after all. "I Am The Face"/Zoot Suit" being the obvious examples.
I'm a little surprised he had to throw it to get someone to bring him another guitar! I thought it was pretty obvious he didn't like the one he was playing! It's not like someone was offstage saying "Crap! We need to find another guitar just like that one! You stall Pete and I'll look around!" No, they just grab another from the rack, put the capo on it, and run it out there. Cool video, always liked this song.
Yeah, but i can see him being a (fill in the unmentionable word for a way for a woman to feel clean), too. He's a great songwriter and interpreter, bbb. If you want to do do yourself a favor: grab a copy of his and ronnie laine's 'Rough Mix' album. In the words of one of my buds: 'The Pope gave it a ten.'
I have a righty squire strat have had it for about 5 or 6 years Im left handed so in my early lessons i played it upside down. sadly it gave up on me when i moved last year. Pete using strats way more often is probably why his gave those weird sounds!
The smash was a nice climax to the solo. Like the time Eric broke a string and plowed right through it. When he moved the broken string out of the way, the rest of the strings snarl GRRRRRH!! as if he'd done it on purpose: czcams.com/video/RDv8Zl9tcL0/video.html
In the end, make-up sex! The man is an absolute genius! Gustav Metzger!!!!!! May his memory be blessed forever and ever!!!! Rest in peace, we will never forget you! You were great and you remain great!
Pete is the best songwriter, guitarist ever. But what's going on with the jogging bottoms. Nearly as bad as the boiler suit or John's skeleton outfit. Great song though.
Dude - agreed. I've been a Who fan since 6th grade (am 43 now) but this clip made me a bit sad. The sweats, the unshaven crazy old man look as he reads lyrics from an iPad clipped to his mic stand. We all get older, but fuck man he's phoning it in it seems like. John's skeleton outfit cracks me up.
He should've stuck with Les Paul's! Also I thought fenders have more tuning stability then Gibson's? Pete had to tune up his guitar in this song twice! ...guess the fender fan boys would retort that a Gibson would have been 20...
jptrustno1 Actually that guitar probably was not that expensive. A Fender Stratocaster with cherry red is pretty standard :l You can get em for easily less than 500.
Odd Kensei Actually, that's an American Strat Deluxe with a piezo system added to the bridge saddles. Retail around $2200. Stick to what you know, junior.
Bless Alan Rogan, God bless him for his suffering! He's Pete's Guitar tech - It took him 17 seconds to deliver another tuned and capo'ed Strat to Pete.....We fans love and appreciate you!
Too funny how he has to quikly brush Pete's arm to remind him 'Hey I'm here !' and Pete does a quik nod like "ohh ok"
You are so right, that guitar tech is probably the best in the business. I love when he brushes pete's arm and hands him a new guitar ready to go, pete isn't mad or happy he is just like 'ya' like that is exactly what was supposed to happen. lol
Look up Alan Rogan and you’ll see who he’s worked with. Definitely the best in the business.
@@taylorgallion2748 that is the relationship of these gentleman in a nutshell. Or was I’m sorry to say.
That was his job...
Gotta love Pete being Pete. He's probably going to kick his coffin over before he climbs in.

Floyd Collins I'd like to see them, but after seeing this, I may pass on the tour, which may be one of their last.
+Mike Patton
I saw them in chicago in probably 1980. The band opened with their song 'Substitute.' I think that summed it up and says it all, was for a reason. Rock on.
At his age he an't got time for patience. I love him!
Legend! Great guitar player/songwriter! Never missed a beat even after the guitar incident. Zak is such a powerhouse drummer and the rest of the band nails it. Thanks for the upload!
Amazing guitar playing in the end though. Some of the old magic at times. Thanks for sharing!
Anyone else think the feedback from when he threw the guitar sound awesome?
Perfectly on beat too!
YEAHHHHH LOL !!!!!
that was priceless how he threw that guitar
Notice how Zak, who is always watching Pete for cues, etc., isn't even remotely fazed by the guitar toss... play on...
Hahaha he must get that calmness from his father
Neither is Daltrey who just keeps playing the riff lol. :D
Love the look on Zak's face when Pete tosses the guitar - 'Uh, oh..."
He didn’t even flinch lol
after 40 years of senselessly trashing guitars ...this one is well justified
I just Love him !!!! Always have !!
Immediately, when they give him the new guitar, the difference is there. Love how he just throws it, like "New one!" I think he's happier with the sound of the new one. Legend.
Lexie Luff Who? There was nobody there... he threw it onto the stage.
camcoop25 Just in general though, it kinda looked like he didn't look where he was throwing it.
He'd have a pretty good awareness of his stage space...
Well, I mean accidents happen. You know.
Yes, sometimes they even happen on youtube threads.
Weird as hell seeing PT standing at a mic singing without a guitar, even if it is only a few seconds.
tabbygail7 I think there's a clip of him doing Face the Face on his solo tour where he just stands and sings it... I seem to remember he does this weird dance thing with it too.
He looked so naked!!
he doesnt know what to do with himself bless him
Fantastic!
thats rock n roll kids!!!!!!!
Beautiful guitar...
Couldn't have made a better sound when it landed!
Great Sound for a hand held device!!! Yeah, Pete is getting old, and his voice is sounding a little worse for the wear... but FUCK, its the WHO just the same, you know? Loved it!!! Thanks for the excellent vid, mate!
Pete is getting to be a softie in his old age, years ago he would have smashed the shit out of that strat!! lol
Pete is still the godfather of punk. This performance is raw and has serious angst
What a live guitar player
For a while Pete looked lost after throwing guitar but being the true professional he is the show must go on
love it
it's just different now and i don't expect any more than a good night of music. i know that at end,i'll still get-it
Great performance
Sometimes we get a little cranky in our old age....A Good stage hand is always prepared to come to the Rescue! Gotta Love him for what he's accomplished over the years and what he's given us. He's gotta be up there in years? 60+ ?
71 this month
+ANDRE ELLIS he's not tho
Pete's always been cranky
He was cranky at 22.
This is pretty tame for how Pete handles guitars compared to how he used to do it
Were YOU there...? 1982. WHO. CLASH. L.A. Coliseum. AMAZING.
Great song
Cool !. We all have our off days !.
saw them in Phoenix in 73. smashed Shit, as per their shows at the time
nobody plays guitar like Pete! great
Always preferred the Telecaster on this track.
Me too!
That was fucking awesome.
@foxden902- What do you think mod was? It was about style, fashion and attitude. Its why they sang "hope I die before I get old" Perhaps they should have sang "hope I die before I wear jogging bottoms and look like a bag of rags"
Awesome sound that made hitting the ground, wild but perfect shit 😀😀😀
Such a genius
It's my favorite stage moment from Pete.
Alan Rogan proving that to this day, you don't just approach Pete on stage...
I saw the who last year and he missed some guitar strums on one song ORACLE ARENA 2013
he channels that anger in his heavy spastic attack on the guitar so well.
I liked how he said fuck it and kept the show rolling
Bravo zak starkey
Man, I know that feeling. I've wanted to throw my out of tune, malfunctioning guitar many times. I just don't have the luxury of having a personal tech bring me a new one!
Fucking phenomenal.
somebodys gonna get it
Shot on a cell phone?
Ridiculous my ass!! That is classic Pete fucking Townshend!!!! Long live pete and I hope he smashes guitars for another 40 yrs!!!!!!!!!!
What they do with the guitar he threw though?
hahahaha. pete was like fuck this guitar. yeet. lol I love this guy.

When your Pete Townshend you just throw the guitar to the ground and
Magically a 10k STRAT just shows up.
That aint no $10k strat
@@sturoc0 well its own by pete townshend so actually its worth more than that
he gets them for free

Pete should go back to the white jumpsuit. Funny, Keith Moon made fun of him, he said, looks like you're here to fix the plumbing.
fucking classic Pete! 🤘
Even Zak is looking 'older'
People forget this was a good who song.😝👏🏽

Cooler than dry ice and down like Four flat tires with a spare with out air 😬
He did say “Thank you” to the guitar tech.
Now that tech is on the ball
The (late) great Alan Rogan.
Jimmy Page loves his Guitars
The Who - Eminence Front, Newcastle 09/12/14, Pete loses his shit.
Of course!
He's not playing his Tele..!
Sounds like the beginning drumbeat of this song got it’s idea from Chris Rea’s Fool If You Think It’s Over 🤔
Aint the same with out the Ox
He Smashed A Gitar And Said Not Gonna Do It Ever Again But He Did Epic Pete Townshend
No,because it still LOOKED like a guitar...not a bunch of toothpicks and wires. lol
Five Spastics have walked through here.
I hate to see a guitar being abused but at the same time I can understand the frustration . . .
I miss John and Keith.

The red Stratocaster has a lot more crunch anyway!!!!!!
Maybe he should get PRS to do a custom job. John Mayer had Paul make up one to sound like Jerry Garcia for a Dead and Company tour.

Nice one Pete! Shame he didn't properly smash it for old times sake!
BestCanKeanRob2 They ruin all the fun!
Knufflebeest He still does it the odd time... just for the hell of it, I guess.
Not really. Pete said he now considers smashing a guitar a gimmick and said the 2004 Tokyo gig was the last full smash we'll ever get.
When did Al Bundy join the who?
Quiet, Peg.
Good one
I can dig the rest of it, but is he wearing sweat pants??????
check out Pete's free time pants!
this must have been better on scene, because it sucks on youtube
gets them for free. he's not bothered
No need for that, more money than sense!!

Interview with the guitar tech. czcams.com/video/eEdPS_D-x_8/video.html
To hell with a non-working guitar.
I’m shocked that the crowd didn’t cheer when Pete threw his guitar. They should have, that was a badass way to go into the opening lyrics
He should've stuck with Les Paul's! Also I thought fenders have more tuning stability then Gibson's? Pete had to tune up his guitar in this song twice! ...guess the fender fan boys would retort that a Gibson would have been 20...
Pete getting ‘thrifty’ in his old age. Not smashing up his guitars.
I didn’t forget the kiddie pic googling.
Missing the bassist 🤔😲😞
It would have been great if Pete had smashed his guitar out of frustration!
What is it with Newcastle that throws Strats out of tune???/ Ha Ha Ha
Without John, Pete's guitar takes the lead.
Poor!
He's just as entitled now as he was in the early days.
I thought that was pretty kool how he just threw a $$$$ guitar like it was nothing just cause it wasn't performing right.
