  • www.gretchenrub... This is what I call the Strategy of the Lightning Bolt.
Discussions of habit-change often emphasize the importance of repeating an action, over and over, until it becomes automatic, and such repetition does indeed help to form habits. However, it’s also true that sometimes we’re hit by a lightning bolt that transforms our habits. We encounter some new idea, and suddenly a new habit replaces a longstanding habit. The Strategy of the Lightning Bolt takes its power from knowledge, beliefs, and ideas.
The Lightning Bolt is a highly effective strategy, but unfortunately, it’s rare, and practically impossible to invoke on command.
A milestone event, whether positive or negative-a panic attack, as in this example, or a marriage, a diagnosis, an anniversary, hitting bottom, a birthday, an accident, a midlife crisis, a long journey taken alone-often triggers a Lightning Bolt, because we’re smacked with some new idea that jolts us into change.
Have you ever been hit by the Lightning Bolt, and found that your habits changed - whether gradually, as in this example, or perhaps even overnight?

I originally found you because of "Clutter" but I also LOVE your low carb & "Lightening Bolt" & "Free from French Fries" type of videos. I got a Lightening Bolt from the "Go Keto with Casey" channel and it was life-changing. You are the "Bob Ross" of CZcams so Calm and level-headed. Thanks, Maureen in Queens NY.

Really interesting to think about acting on these lightening bolt idea that are so often dismissed. I also read the book you mention on your recommendation and found it to be a real eye opener on the role some foods have on weight.

I had a few "lightning bolts" in my life... :-) The last one is to watch a movie called "Ip man". Ip man was Bruce Lee's first martial arts teacher. I was impressed by his story... But then I made a deeper research... and found about how the martial art called "Wing Chun" is particularly good for health... And also it's phylosophy: to face life problems. So I started practising it because: 1) I usually procrastinate 2) I want to come to an old age as a healthy grandad... not to be a burden for my kids.

    Hey Gretchen,
I've also seen this called the "Inciting Incident" taken from the literary definition:
"An inciting incident is an event or action that propels the plot of a story forward. It is the thing that makes the protagonist or hero take action. It acts as a catalyst for everything that happens in the story." -from ask.com
Thought you might find that helpful.

I call these "watershed moments" or "defining moments" but I like your term for it :-)

Curious to know if the changes in how you utilize/manage insulin remain a good thing for you? Thank you so much for sharing. Your sister might research Vit. D3 accompanied with beta carotene and Vit K2. Bye

this is funny. I so agree with what you say, but this particular book, which I read cause of you recommanding it, so not resonated with me. on the other hand, same topic a book called "reversing diabetes" by dr.neal barnars, with the raw food logic made so much sense to me, that I have changed everything overnight just like you said, and the more i live like this the more it makes sense to me :-) funny (we should compare blood tests just for the fun of it
