I had a Far Eastern History class in college and one thing I remember is that Japanese culture was based on admiration of beauty. Chinese based more on "goodness" both revered duty but especially Japanese honored the code of obedience to the social structure and superiors.
So glad you are reacting to this. I also enjoyed the original mini series. This one is sort of condensed in some areas. Enjoy

Haven't started this one yet .... you beat me to it! The book was HUGE in the '70s, and I watched the series in the '80s but never since.

I remember the old version of Shogun and i like this new series. Still a little hard to keep up with the subtitles but i get whats happening! The cinematography is awesome and the actors are great! I watched the first miniseries and I loved it. I did learn some Japanese words and wondered how accurate the story was.

The English subtitles came fast so I put the speed at 75%

I also watched the old series, with my namesake Richard Chamberlain. In fact, I then bought the books, which here in Brazil were in two volumes, and it became one of my favorites! I advise, for those who like it, to read the original material, as with the images in your head they create a better experience.

This is my favorite novel, I must have read it over 100 times. I have seen the original miniseries from the 80's multiple times. I own it in a special VHS version, in DVD format, and digitally. And yes, there are a lot of cultural and lingual flaws in both. This did correct the majority of those, but the story itself is so different from the novel and original miniseries that I absolutely HATE it. I refuse to watch it again, but I will definitely keep up with your reactions. The costumes are amazing, the sets are terrific, and the acting is very VERY good. I just can't forgive it for ruining one of the greatest novels ever.

It’s about the lead up to the Sekigahara campaign which established the Tokugawa shogunate. Or at least a fictionalised version that takes a lot of historical liberties. But it’s a good story.

Girl, you misunderstand the beginning of the character. If he hadn't been aggressive, he would have been killed right away. He only survived because he opposed the Catholic Christians! Your "OH my God" wouldn't have saved him!! hehe
