The Tide’s Magnificence is a beautiful 196 page hard back book containing 79 poems written by Molly Drake from 1935 until her death in 1993. With 26 songs across two CDs performed by Molly Drake and recorded on vintage tape recorders in mono by her husband, Rodney Drake in the 1950s and 1960s.
    Buy it here: fledglingrecord...
“This is the missing link in the Nick Drake story.” Joe Boyd
The Tide’s Magnificence comes as a full colour 196 page hard-back case-bound and stitched book printed on contrasting paper stock with printed page edges. The book contains 79 poems by Molly Drake, lyrics to the songs, a 14 page introduction by her daughter, the actor Gabrielle Drake, photos, diary extracts, song manuscripts and handwritten notes by Molly, as well as the essay Give Me A Place To Be, which previously appeared in the book about Nick Drake: Remembered For A While.
There are two CDs containing 26 songs. The first CD was originally released as a limited private pressing in 2013, the second contains 7 unreleased songs all of which were recorded in mono in the 1950s on home tape recorders by Molly’s husband Rodney Drake. The songs were digitally transferred by Nick’s producer and engineer; John Wood and mastered by Simon Heyworth at Super Audio Mastering carefully preserving the varying qualities inevitably found in such old recordings.
Many of the songs and poems were so exquisitely covered on the 2017 tour by The Unthanks and on their CD and Vinyl release: ‘The Songs Of Molly Drake’
The Tide’s Magnificence is a limited edition, there will only be one pressing of the set before it is made available as a single CD.

And came upon the little inn that we had found together
The landlord gave us toast and tea and stopped to share a joke
    And I remember firelight
    I remember firelight
    I remember firelight
    And you remember smoke
We ran about the meadow grass with all the harebells bending
And shaking in the summer wind a summer never-ending
We wandered to the little stream among the river flats
    And I remember willow trees
    I remember willow trees
    I remember willow trees
    And you remember gnats
We strolled the Spanish marketplace at 90 in the shade
With all the fruit and vegetables so temptingly arrayed
And we can share a memory as every lover must
    And I remember oranges
    I remember oranges
    I remember oranges
    And you remember dust
The autumn leaves are tumbling down and winter's almost here
But through the spring and summertime we laughed away the year
And now we can be grateful for the gift of memory
    For I remember having fun

We tramped the open moorland in the rainy April weather
And came upon the little inn that we had found together
The landlord gave us toast and tea and stopped to share a joke
    And I remember firelight
    I remember firelight
    I remember firelight
    And you remember smoke
We ran about the meadow grass with all the harebells bending
And shaking in the summer wind a summer never-ending
We wandered to the little stream among the river flats
    And I remember willow trees
    I remember willow trees
    I remember willow trees
    And you remember gnats
With all the fruit and vegetables so temptingly arrayed
And we can share a memory as every lover must
    And I remember oranges
    I remember oranges
    I remember oranges
    And you remember dust
The autumn leaves are tumbling down and winter's almost here
But through the spring and summertime we laughed away the year
And now we can be grateful for the gift of memory
    For I remember having fun
Two happy hearts that beat as one
When I had thought that we were "we"
But we were "you and me"

When I heard it I knew it was Molly Drake. I’d recently heard it on a Nick Drake album, and Tim Freedman sung it on tour early 2021 in Sydney. Weird, like the universe is trying to tell me something…

02/05/2022: I'm still in that little inn we found together that February evening. the steps were icy and the candle was a hideous scent, but we appreciated the effort. that was so long ago. so many pairs of feet have come and go from those steps since, and yet not enough. there's a candle of sandalwood by the same ledge now, and the chair in the same spot. nothing will rot your head and heart more than this nervous tick that we call 'remembering'

    ROLAND LEIGHTON: (from) NACHKLANG
Down the long white road we walked together
Down between the grey hills and the heather,
    Where the tawny-crested
    Plover cries.
You seemed all brown and soft, just like a linnet,
Your errant hair had shadowed sunbeams in it,
    And there shone all April
    In your eyes.
